American Idol – Brenna Gethers

The votes are in and Brenna Gethers, Mount Vernon Ney York’s own songbird, will have to seek fame someplace other than “American Idol.” Gethers received the lowest number of votes for the female contestants on the popular prime-time show. Three other competitors — two males and one female — were also voted off. The 25-year-old took the news gracefully, calling the journey an “awesome ride.” “Thank you for supporting me,” Gethers said to viewers. But she may also have a plan up her sleeve. Before Gethers sang Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” to the audience one last time, she promised her fans that more of her was to come and to “look forward to my album.”

Gethers was one of the two Lower Hudson Valley women to be one of the 24 finalists on Fox’s hit show. Becky O’Donohue of Dobbs Ferry was eliminated last week. Gethers has emerged as a feisty contestant on the show and has received both praise and critiques from judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. Last week, she sang Stevie Wonder’s “You Are The Sunshine of My Life.”

Gethers, an honor roll student throughout her time in Mount Vernon schools, graduated from Brandeis University in 2002. She has held different jobs, from camp counselor to legal secretary. Back at home in Mount Vernon, friends and family were attentively watching Fox TV to see if their favorite hometown celebrity would make it to the next round.

Serapher Conn-Halevi, a former educator of Gethers’, said the entire city had been rooting for her to make it to next week’s show. And she also agrees with Gethers that it is not the last time the public will see her.

 ”She will go on and make music, and I will support her album,” Conn-Halevi said.

“That is Brenna. Nothing will stop her.” Conn-Halevi said Gethers brought to America the young talent of the city.

“Brenna is one of Mount Vernon’s favorite youngest daughters,” she said. “She still is our champion.”
