The end of the first week of American Idol Season 10 has come to a close, and we’re left sorting out all these new feelings. We have new judges. More accurately, as well, we have no Simon. So, how are we dealing with those feelings of loss and abandonment? How do we feel about the new judges? What do we think of the contestants so far, and what sort of predictions do we have about this season?
Do We Miss Simon?
“Every time I think of you, I always catch my breath. And I’m still standing here, and you’re miles away. And I’m wondering why you left. And there’s a storm that’s raging through my frozen heart tonight…I ain’t missing you at all…since you’ve been gone away.”
What About the New Judges?
I’ve read bloggers who’ve said that Jennifer Lopez is the “sober man’s Paula Abdul” and I kind of see where they’re coming from. She’s suuuuuuuuper nice, and she seems to have a really hard time with the saying no portion of the job. It’s a little early in the season to judge the judges on whether or not they are able to give constructive feedback. In fact, Jennifer has only go so far as to say that certain contestants will really need to step it up in Hollywood, and to suggest to poor Devyn that she might want to think about a wardrobe change. Despite all that, and despite the fact that the show is simply coated in glamorous, windblown stills of Jennifer:
As for Steven Tyler, I can’t tell you exactly why, but I like him. So far he’s only said kitschy or wildly inappropriate things so far that will be great for the year-end montage later one, but I think he’s paying attention and he might prove to be a good judge later in the season. Either that or he will be a totally out-of-control mess and therefore wildly fun to watch.
It seems that the general expectation of Steven is to do something crazy – like have affairs with contestants, or to generally behave in a rock-and-roll-type manner. Hopefully the affair scenario is out, since according to sources he’s had a long-term relationship with a woman named Erin Brady since 2006. I anticipate that Tyler will have great advice for the rock-focused Idol contestants, while Lopez will be able to coach the pop-oriented folks. They might surprise us, and have great advice for everybody.
Whether or not they do, it seems like this season will be fun. Tyler is funny and charming, and Lopez is sweet and endearing, and Randy’s the same old Randy, which we’re thinking is a good thing.
How About Those New Jersey and Louisiana Auditions?
I’m not going to recap all the coverage we’ve already done, I’m just going to tell you what we’ve learned about who, so that we don’t invest a lot of emotion and energy in people we know aren’t going to make it. So, get ready for the spoilers.
The first thing we need to know is that there is going to be a Top 40. That Top 40 will need to go back to Hollywood for a “Sudden Death” type of round called “Sing for your Life.” This will narrow the Top 40 down to the Top Whatever (not sure yet). According to some sort of drama or something, the Top 40 to make it out of Hollywood (and back in, as it turns out) is down to 38 based on some reason or another, so, from the auditions we’ve seen so far, with no further ado, here are those who make it to the Top 40. We might get two more people thrown in eventually, and we’ll update this list as we see more auditions and get more information.
New Jersey
Aaron Saunders
Alex Ryan
Jessica Cunningham
Pia Toscano
Robbie Rosen
Other than Robbie Rosen, do you remember seeing any of those auditions? Didn’t think so.
New Orleans
Brett Loewenstern
Eryn Kelly
Jordan Dorsey
Jovany Barreto
Stay tuned for more info. Next stop, Milwaukee!
