American Idol Season 9 Road to Hollywood
It’s the last stop before Hollywood, y’all, and we’re live with the real-time American Idol (which, incidentally, is not live – as it was recorded over the summer).
We start off talking about General Larry Platt’s “Pants on the Ground.”
The opening hunk of programming is about song choice and the Denver audition’s Jessica Furney She picked a Simon Cowell-co-written song as her song this time around. Bitsy McBeckham looks utterly astonished that Simon is capable of songwriting. She sings Simon’s song real pretty.
There are a couple of confusing montages that don’t make any sense to me, and then a break. I’m regrouping. This show is sort of jumping all over the place.
We’re back, and there is a little montage about attention-getting, and Amanda Shechtman, vocal improv-ey kind of girl. She’s done a lot of theater. She gets all drama queened-out when it’s pretty clear that she’s making it through, and thusly annoys me, but she has a good voice. I will either love her intensely or hate her the most.
Lee Dewyze and Chrystal Bowersox both have nice voices, and make it through.
On to some other stuff, and I don’t even know that they told us his name, but he has a hat and he made it through. So…there’s that. He kicks off a montage about fake-outs, when people come out all sad pretending that they didn’t make it and then pulling the ticket out of their shirts and pants and stuff.
We’re starting off this hunk with a bunch of many-time auditioners. Simon doesn’t remember anybody, except for her awful suntan. She’s much paler this year.
Lacey Brown got into the Top 50, and lost out to CORKERY, which astonishes me because I really didn’t like her AT ALL. Once again I like this Lacey person more than a lot of people I’ve seen so far. Let’s hope she goes far.
Stephanie Fisher auditioned for the 7th time, and sprayed herself with lots of stuff and wore a weirdo jazz recital costume and stank up “Fever” in a bad way. Seriously. I bet it smelled really bad in there. I wonder how Becks felt about this girl, in the aforementioned jazz recital costume, saying that Victoria Beckham was her fashion icon. She of the stiff upper lip handled it with grace. Simon is a big jerk in this little scene. Shame on him.
Now for Rachel Hubbard, a 16 year-old, Thaddeus Johnson, another 16 year-old, and Genesis Moore (also 16) who all made it through, along with many other 16-year-olds. Stay tuned for more of the seriously creepy stuff that is in store. I will make an honest effort to be nice about the Man Flower, but I’m not making any promises.
We get the stats from Ryan – over 100,000 contestants in 7 different cities. Then they go into some weird montage about the athletes that audition for American Idol.
Thus setting us up for 6′8″ 17-year old who calls himself a Beautiful Man Flower. I find myself rooting for him. Then Adrian Chandtchi starts to sing, forgetting the lyrics to “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.” Randy laughs like a fool and Simon makes several unkind comments. He gets the letdown from everybody, but he takes it gracefully. Catch a Catch the video of Adrian Chandtchi
Michael Lynche, 26 years old, is a personal trainer who just find out that he’s got his first kid on the way. He’s a big dude, as well. He smiles while he’s singing, which is something I’m a stupid sucker for. The girls looked kinda moony-eyed.
Dee Dee Benomi, who lost her best friend Rebecca 4 years ago. She smacks a bit of Corkery, but may be better. Of course, I didn’t hate Corkery at first. It was a creeping hate. Once Dee Dee loosens up a bit she does better, and then bursts into tears in front of the judges. She learns that she’s made it through, and he’s pretty overwhelmed that she made it through. I like her in spite of the Corkery similarities.
Only 15 minutes to go. What kind of gold are we going to get? Aaron Kelly tells a very sad story about his biological parents and how messed up they were and how his aunt and uncle adopted he and his brother to keep them out of foster care. He’s only 16 years old, but he’s got this neat gravelly country voice. I’m an insta-fan. Simon thinks the “mums” will like him, and I think he’s right. I kinda love him.
Kimberly Bishop would be very into recycling and helping kids in Africa, and might very well be high on something. She doesn’t hit one single note of “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry, and Kara thinks she’s naughty. Kimberly asked to be excused. She’s a no.
Sheddhai Harris’s mom had a vision that her daughter would sing even when her daughter was in the womb. This vision was incorrect. Oh man, it really was incorrect. Tone deaf. Pretty girl. She’s a no.
We’re back for the last little bit – a segment on Hope Johnson, a Texas native who grew up really poor. She’s only 19, so cute and has a great country voice. Very endearing. They all like her, and she’s so excited and happy, but not spazzy or awkward.
Next week, HOLLYWOOD! See y’all then. ELLEN!!!!!!!

Man Flower is already famous, kinda. The whole time I was listening to him, I was thinking, well, that guy from Antony and the Johnstons has a record deal and legions of fans and critical acclaim, and he would probably get laughed out of the audition room, too! Pretty much sounds the same.
I still like Megan Joy, I think she got shafted by having to sing all those awful songs that didn’t suit her voice. But that little dance…ugh!
