Well kiss my grits! They done gone to my neck of the woods! For the January 27 2011 episode, American Idol headed to Nashville to hold auditions in the Ryman Auditorium. A little background on the Ryman: it’s the home of the Grand Ole Opry, but it’s not just a venue for country music. The Ryman is also where Neil Young recorded the movie Heart of Gold, Erasure recorded their live album On the Road to Nashville, and Patty Griffin recorded her album, A Kiss in Time. And since I’m a Southern Belle myself (or maybe just a huge music nerd), I knew all that without Wikipedia!

But the Ryman never knew such talent until it saw Christene MacCafferty. Remember the GOPACKGO! girl from last night’s Milwaukee auditions? Christene might just have her beat on the annoying scale. She was only slightly less annoying than that Miley Cyrus wannabe from the New Jersey auditions, Victoria Huggins. A dental assistant, Christene is not shy, but she doesn’t know when to shut up. She just keeps bleating with that horrible squeaky voice until I have to sit on my hands to keep from chunking my baseball bat into the television. Does she get in? What do you think!

Chelsea Oaks and Rob Bolin are castoffs from the CMT show Can You Duet?, where they made the top 10. They’re hoping for another chance on American Idol. There’s definite friction between them, as Chelsea tells the judges that they kept trying at a relationship for a long time, but it just wasn’t working, so they’re trying to be “just friends” now. Rob seems to have a different opinion, and it’s obvious that he’s still in love with her. Not too hard to understand, since she’s quite pretty and he’s shorter than Ryan Seacrest. But I’ve been in a relationship like this before, so I can kind of sympathize with both parties. Separate, they sound okay, but together they sound pretty amazing. The judges pass them on through, but without the help of the other one, I don’t see them getting very far. Their dynamic reminded me so much of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who sang “Falling Slowly”. They broke up but still sang together, and you could FEEL it, when they were in love, and when they weren’t.

I’ve met a hundred guys like Allen Lewis, a big burly tattoo artist. He sings some Skynard (shocking!), but it’s pretty terrible. He’d probably fit in okay in a band somewhere, though. The judges are surprised that he’s a nice guy and receptive to criticism. But in my experience, if there’s ever a big burly metal guy or a hardcore punk fan, you can be pretty sure that they’re going to be intelligent and super-nice. Hell, half of my friends kind of look like Allen.

Next is Stormi Henley from Crossville Tennessee, a Miss Teen USA winner. She kind of looks like a braindead Brooke Shields, but Steven Tyler looks pretty smitten. It’s a good thing Miss Teen USA doesn’t have a talent portion, or Stormi would have lost. J-Lo is not impressed, and neither am I. Though, like Bikini Girl, she bats her eyelashes and the men send her through. We’ll never see her again.

Adrienne Beasley is a black girl adopted by white farmers. Is this supposed to be a sob story? Unless they made her their slave, I’m thinking not because they seem really nice. Consequently, Adrienne sounds like a Deep South redneck, and I cringe when she says she’s “22-years-ODE”. Even I’m not that Southern, y’all. But she sounds fresh when she sings country music, and I’m thinking she could be the female answer to Darius Rucker. The judges liked her, and I did too.

Jackie Wilson is a plus-sized and pretty bar manager, who sings some Aretha Franklin and knocks it out of the park. The judges love her and give her a golden ticket. To celebrate, she starts making out with her dad. Oh wait, is that her boyfriend? Then how did he know she had been ready for this since age three? Ewww….

Latoya “Younique” Moore is the honorary baddie of the night. She’s dressed in a Goodwill prom dress like she thinks she’s some kind of princess, and she’s got her “album” in hand. She’s badder than bad, you know the kind that won’t shut up even after she’s been rejected and is walking out the door. She doesn’t understand the judges’ criticisms which make her pretty awesome. She’s not unique, but she wins for best of the worst in Nashville.

Blah blah some guys that made it, blah blah some dude in overalls that sounds like Josh Groban. I know lots of guys in overalls that sound like Josh Groban. His name was Matt Dillard and he got a reluctant ticket to Hollywood, but he won’t make it far.

Ending the night was Lauren Alaina Suddeth (pictured), from Rossville GA. Rossville is about five minutes from Chattanooga, and it is an area I know very well since it is only about 20 minutes away from me. Her parents look like they’re the same age that she is, which is pretty typical in these parts. She’s 15, but she has such big hair and so much makeup that she looks about 30. She has a sob story, but after Chris Medina last night it’s not even worth mentioning. She has an amazing voice though, and the judges are mucho grande impressed. They think she’s the best of the night, and we will probably see her again. I’ll be rooting for her since she lives so close to me. Ooh, if she makes Top 3, I should go to Rossville when she visits her home town and report what happens! I don’t know if she’ll make it that far, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing her for awhile.

The only song I remember hearing during the episode was “I’m Amazed” by My Morning Jacket, but I’m not sure when it was played.
