American Idol Top 4 Movie Night Live Blog 5-11-2010
Oh thank God, a themed week that actually sounds promising! After the snooze-fests known as Sinatra Week and Elvis Week, I think we could all use a pick-me-up!
Rumor has it that Crystal and Lee and dueting together (sounds dirty, doesn’t it?). So, they put the stronger two together and the weaker two together? Sounds like it might be interesting. Jaime Foxx is back as the movie night mentor, which is okay by me because I thought he did a pretty good job. Will we have anything comparable to when Kris Allen did “Falling Slowly” from Once? Here’s to hopin’!
Lee Dewyze is first and is singing “Kiss from a Rose” by Seal. It’s from Batman Forever I think? Lee is rumored to be dating Siobhan…how cute would that be! Lee is not holding a candle to Seal. I hate to say it’s karaoke but…. Randy said it was just okay and was pitchy. Holy cow, Kara actually looks good tonight! Nice to see her wearing something that’s not sparkly. She said something about he wasn’t as good as last week. Simon thought it was…karaoke. See? I told ya!
Mike Lynche is singing “Will You Be There” by Michael Jackson. This song was in Free Willy. I have an image of Big Mike picking up Willy with his bare hands and throwing him into the ocean. And that’s pretty much what I was thinking about the whole time he was singing. Was he good? Randy said it was “just all right”, which is a totally different critique than his opinion of Lee. Kara waxed nostalgic for “This Woman’s Work”. Simon didn’t understand why he sang this song, but he said “at least you gave it 100%.”
Lee and Crystal are singing “Falling Slowly” from Once (awesomely done by Kris Allen last year…hey, wasn’t I just wishing for something comparable to that performance? Hey, I know, let’s just copy it and do it again!). This kind of music would be good for Lee! After all, Glen Hansard has a pretty gravelly voice. But Marketa Irglova, Crystal is not. She does not fit well on this song. Liz and I love that song, so that means the judges loved it too. Because they just can’t seem to have an original thought without consulting either of us first!
Casey James is singing everyone’s favorite song from The Graduate, ”Mrs. Robinson” by Simon & Garfunkel. Did he have facial hair before? Something looks naked about him. Compared to some of his other performances, this one isn’t so bad. Randy called Kara out on being Mrs. Robinson. Ellen liked it. Mrs. Robinson Kara thought it was a good choice. Simon thought it was lazy.
Crystal Bowersox is getting the pimp spot again…I can’t believe it! She is singing “I’m Alright” by Kenny Loggins from Caddyshack. It’s the best solo act of the night, but it’s still not her best performance. I like Crystal, but she’s kind of a one-trick pony. Ellen said she “Crystal-ized” the song. Simon said that after this performance, she was back in the game.
Have I lamented that this is the worst season of American Idol ever yet? 
Didn’t Casey already do “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?”???! Well, he’s doing it (possibly) again with Big Mike. Oh wait, that was “Heaven”. Same song. The pickin’ is good. It finishes really nicely, but there are some definite issues. One of these guys is going home tomorrow. Kara said the duets were better than all of the solo performances.

I’m a little behind. It was like that last part of Lee’s performance was his “power up” like in Rock Band when you have to “deploy” your guitar to save somebody else. It was like his better vocals deployed to save his weaker vocals.
