Hey Y’all! Long time no see! It’s lizaio, and I’m live-blogging American Idol Season 9 Top 7 performance tonight. It’s a night for inspirational songs, presumably because of tomorrow night’s Idol Gives Back.
Idol Gives Back is amazing, and if they are really giving that much money and help to needy people, I will keep watching this show as long as it is on. Enough preachin’. On to the mentor tonight.
Tonight’s mentor is Alicia Keys, who (as you know) is a phenomenally talented artist. What will the Idols choose to sing tonight? Will it be a bunch of schmaltz, or will we be truly inspired? Stay tuned, Gentle Readers, and watch the inspiration with me.
I can’t believe it’s Idol Gives Back time already? Where has the time gone, fellow Idol viewers? Alas, it is here, and tonight’s theme proves to bring out the gooey muck in all of us. But first, let’s have a quicker than ever this season introduction of the judges.
The Idols emerge, and obviously the “inspirational” theme dictates monochrome almost-all black clothing. Alicia Keys, as a noted philanthropist, and a kick-ass R and B artist, is the mentor tonight, and she (of course) gets pick up off the ground by Big Mike.
Crystal asks Alicia about her involvement in Idol Gives Back, and Alicia gives a sort of boilerplate response, because we’re obviously already strapped for time.
Casey James is singing “Don’t Stop” by Fleetwood Mac. Alica Keys warns him against being too generic, which I personally think one couldn’t avoid whilst singing this particular song. This song is a big zero for me. Casey looks all orange. He did OK with what he had, but I’ve already established that the song is not all that. That’s right Fleetwood Mac fans. String me up. Randy thought his performance needed more, Ellen thought he could have been greater (ie nobody will be thinking about it tomorrow), and Kara compares the performance to “Jealous Guy.” Simon thought the performance lacked emotion and inspiration. He said it was a “lazy” song choice. Casey looked bummed, but he shouldn’t worry – RIGHT America? The twelve-year-old is going home tomorrow, right?
Next we get news of Lee DeWyze’s bromance with Andrew Garcia, who became besties with him during the beginning of the competition. Alicia gave Lee good advice, and she’s just so very pretty. Lee’s doing “The Boxer” by Simon and Garfunkel. It’s sort of hard to touch a Simon and Garfunkel song, but despite Lee’s little lyric snafu at the beginning, he performs well and emotionally, and seemed to connect to (maybe not the audience) but something during the course of the performance. Meh. I don’t know. What did you guys think?
Ellen thought it was Lee’s best performance, and Kara thought this was Lee’s “moment” and that his emotion took him to another level. Simon thought he was better than Casey – staggeringly better.
Captain Sully (the guy who saved the people by landing the plane) was there, and he looked nice.
Tim Urban is singing THE GOO GOO DOLLS, who I find kind of anti-inspirational, but whatevs. Somehow I think that the floppy-haired, doe-eyed lead singer of The Goo Goo Dolls sang this song better than floppy-haired, doe-eyed Tim Urban. That, in a word, sucked. Sorry Jebbica. Mama no like.
Randy didn’t like it. Ellen thought Tim was like a bad soup-of-the-day. Kara was too easy on him. Simon thought this was better than the Queen performance, but that the performance was too big for Tim to attempt. It thought it was blech.
So I was at karaoke a couple weeks ago, and a bunch of people were doing R Kelly songs. Now Aaron Kelly is singing “I Believe I Can Fly” and before he even starts I’ll say I hope I hear him sing this tomorrow night.
Dude, just because you pretty much have the same last names was no excuse for that nonsense.
Randy said the arrangement was weird and that Aaron did a good job with such a great song. Ellen made a funny joke, and Ellen gave him good feedback too. WTH? Kara even gave him good feedback. What is WRONG with these people? Simon was realistic in saying that listening to that on the radio would have been an unpleasant experience. Why hold back for the twelve-year-old? If he’s old enough to be in the competition he’s old enough to take real criticism.
Apparently, tomorrow night’s Idol Gives Back will have only A-list performers. Remind me to google about that so I can in turn be snarky about it.
Siobahn Magnus is doing some Mariah Carey/Whitney Houston Inspirational Masterpiece. She has a bird in her hair ala Carris Bradshaw, only MORE birdlike. I don’t know this song. Jebb? Tell me how old I am? The Hubs and I agree that we would have liked that performance more if we knew that song, but that being said, we thought she was good. Randy didn’t like it. It was “just ok” for him. Ellen thought it was great. Kara thought it was too dramatic and that she’d want to hang out with Siobhan more than buy her record. Simon didn’t like it. The “leaves” on her outfit distracted him.
Siobahn rambled about something. I wasn’t listening. I still like her, but that didn’t float my boat.
Mike Lynche is up next, and I hear he’s singing “Loving You” which is just not a good song in general, but let see how he does. OK. SO if Mike spoke from the heart, and picked from his song list, he is not doing “Loving You” which means that somebody in the comments made a funny joke and my sense of humor is broken. Bad lizaio! Go find sense of humor at commercial break. He’s doing “Hero,” which is by that guy from Nickelback, but I had to google that because I”m all old and stuff. And oblivious.
Randy thought he held his own. Ellen said it was great, Kara said it wasn’t great, and Simon said it was pretty good. Meh. Let’s keep him around for another week, shall we? Simon asked if the song was about Spiderman and Cutie Mike said, “No it’s about being a hero!” which was ADORABLE!
Simon looks REALLY tired, or maybe he’s been celebrating 4/20? Nah. He’s just tired.
I wish I could stay awake for Madonna GLEE! but I’m soooo tired! DVR, record it for me.
Crystal Bowersox is up, and singing “People Get Ready” by Marvin Gaye, and I know she’s going to do it right. Alicia Keys had no worries. No instrument to impede her from connecting vocally. Do it girl!
OK. It might be that I’ve had a hard day, but I’m weeping almost openly at this performance. And apparently it’s catching, and she broke up at the end. Randy gave her a standing ovation, and Ellen told her she was beautiful and told her she keeps getting better and better, and Kara THANKED her for putting her guitar down and that she schooled everyone else. Simon said it was inspirational. It was. She’s the one.
What do you think? Vote for your favorite.

Nice to have you back!
2 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:06 pm
Casey: just be quiet and play! He kind of looks like the long lost member of Hanson. :p
3 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:07 pm
Hello everyone! I’m from Pittsburgh and jumping between the hockey playoffs and American Idol. Almost missed the start, they got right down to business, didn’t they?
4 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:09 pm
Hi, Deb! Casey DOES look like he went to the Ryan and Simon House of Tanning.
5 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:09 pm
This is going to be rough.
6 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:12 pm
– welcome! They did get really down to business, but it was just as well to get Casey’s Lindsey Lohan tan impression out of the way. Welcome to our site.
7 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:12 pm
OMG, Jebbica, he really does look like a Hanson Bro!
8 Robyn // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:14 pm
Hello guys! I missed last week unfortunetly, but I’m back. Going to be jumping back and forth between facebook and this. Anyways, I don;t think Casey was bad, but it was background noise to me.
9 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:14 pm
Nice to meet you lizaio, don’t think I’ve been on with you before, I’m a fairly new visitor. Let’s see what Lee does, right now I think he is getting stronger and may have a go at the top.
10 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:15 pm
He got the lyrics a little wrong, but I LOVE his voice.
11 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:18 pm
What are they talking about? That was like a sick cat murdering Simon and Garfunkel. I like Lee but that was rough.
12 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:18 pm
Hola Robyn!
13 Michelle // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:18 pm
On west coast. Please keep me posted as show airs. I have to wait three more hours.
Thanks!
14 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:18 pm
I do like his voice and he’s done a better job of showcasing it. Nice job by Lee. Did Kara get hair extensions???
15 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:19 pm
Gosh, you can tell they (judges) really don’t listen to them sing.
16 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:21 pm
Hi Michelle!
17 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:21 pm
Kara has gotten EVERYTHING extensions. Yeesh. She’s out of control. But, I find myself liking her more than last year. Lee could have done better, but he was better than Blondie, so I guess it’s all subjective.
18 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:22 pm
I thought they were both terrible, but at least Casey is a decent guitar player.
19 Michelle // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:22 pm
Hi. I hate waiting! Thanks for keeping me updated.
20 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:22 pm
– Casey James and Lee Dewyze have performed so far and Lee did better but not by much. We have an R. Kelly song up soon, so prepare to be inspired. Or… Well, at least you’re hanging with us!
21 Michelle // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:24 pm
I love Lee. I wanted him to do well tonight. I think Aaron needs to go next.
22 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:25 pm
i’ve never heard this Goo Goo DOlls song, but I still think Tim is awful.
23 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:25 pm
Wow, Tim sounds like $*** tonight!
24 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:26 pm
hey all. Im from New Zealand. Thanks for the updates. What did Lee sing?
25 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:28 pm
Lee sang “the Boxer” by SImon and Garfunkel. He did aight. Best of the night so far.
26 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:30 pm
I didn’t recognize the Goo Goo Doll song either, probably one of their few “inspirational” pieces. I had a hard time separating Tim’s voice from the music and found I didn’t really care!
27 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:30 pm
– Exactly! Somebody make me care about tonight!
28 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:31 pm
Wow, I hate to be Negative Nancy tonight, but Ow my ears! Is this tone-deaf Idol week?
29 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:32 pm
I wish Aaron would bow out and not come back until he can legally purchase alcohol. He has a big voice, but needs to grow into it and get some life experience so he can connect with the lyrics.
30 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:33 pm
Right?!?!?!? That was blech!
31 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:33 pm
More R.Kelly please.
32 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:34 pm
inspirational? Really? More?
33 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:36 pm
No I was kidding, R.Kelly is terrible and so is most inspirational music.
34 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:37 pm
If the Idol contestants started peeing on people R. Kelly-style, I’d be much more entertained right now.
35 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:37 pm
That’s a relief.
36 Leslaki // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:37 pm
I’m not really watching, just listening. I missed the first song, but totally agree that the Simon and Garfunkel was the best of the night so far. “I Believe I Can Fly” was painful.
37 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:37 pm
What did Tim sing? Was it Iris by Goo Goo Dolls (love that song) – that’s off the Sleepless in Seattle. Either way, I think his voice is far too weak for Idol
38 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:39 pm
Siobhan looks really pretty tonight! I love that outfit! And no, that wasn’t me with the “Chattanooga loves Siobhan” poster!
39 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:39 pm
Why do people like these songs?
40 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:40 pm
Wasn’t “Iris” SOme other less good song.
41 Robyn // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:40 pm
….at least she screamed in tune this time…… Sorry, that was mean. She wasn’t that bad, but she is not my fav idol this season.
42 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:40 pm
I love Siobhan!
43 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:41 pm
: It’s called “When You Believe” by Mariah and Whitney from the Prince of Egypt soundtrack, I think. I remember we sang it in chorus in middle school.
She stole some style cues from Imogen Heap this week!
44 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:42 pm
They really don’t like Siobhan.
45 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:42 pm
There is a movie called Prince of Egypt?
46 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:42 pm
That was the best performance so far–a wicked hard song to sing and she was the only one on key tonight, and the judges ripped her a new one. They need to adjust their hearing aides.
47 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:43 pm
Michaels singing “Loving You.”
48 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:44 pm
I hope Mike, Tim, Casey and Aaron leave next, nor necessarily in that order, but for me, all of them have the boring factor, though Tim is good looking (go model).
49 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:44 pm
Siobhan, I love a lot of songs, but don’t sing them in public…. I’m resigned that I am going to have to vote my girl off sooner, rather than later. *Pittsburgh Pens up over Ottawa Senators 5-2 if anyone cares. : )
50 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:44 pm
: Yes, it was the first traditionally animated movie by Dreamworks.
51 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:44 pm
Ha!!!! – I totally agree.
52 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:45 pm
, she did sing on key, but she’s got some weak spots in her range that I think are hurting her…at least that’s what is bothering me right now.
53 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:46 pm
do you get annoyed with me that I live in a box?
54 Leslaki // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:46 pm
She’s got a great voice, but I think she’s getting more nasal as the season goes on.
55 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:47 pm
– exactly.
56 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:49 pm
I think Siobhan has got a killer voice. Her and Crystal have the most confidence, vocally. I hope there is a ‘rock’ night this season. I think they’d all benefit from that. Well maybe not Aaron or Mike. But I don’t care much for them
57 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:50 pm
No, , it’s adorable! See, there’s this thing called a television, and it’s a talking box! Do you know about rock-n-roll music?
OMG, Big Mike is doing Nickelback or Chad Kroeger, and if you’ve heard the original Mike is kicking ass right now. I actually really like this tonight.
58 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:51 pm
The judges are on crack.
59 Robyn // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:51 pm
Mike was good! Yay! Go Big Mike! Lol. Sorry, I have a soft spot for him.
60 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:54 pm
@ Adam . I thought that was a lot better before he started doing R & B, and was doing the singer song writer type thing.
61 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:54 pm
If Mike stopped looking like a dollied up gay pig, then I might like him all. I find him awkward to watch. He has a nice voice though
62 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:54 pm
I like Mike. I want Aaron to go home. He got to stay when Alex should have stayed. I feel the same about Tim. I want Aaron to go, then Tim, then Casey, then Mike, then Siobhan, then Crystal for the win.
63 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:55 pm
That he….
64 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:55 pm
I agree WI
65 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:55 pm
I think you’re onto something Adam, especially with Siobhan. She does have a great voice. I just wish she’d avoid songs that require strength in the lower range.
66 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:57 pm
OMG yes Alex should of been put into top 12 by the americans over Tim and Aaron. He had an awesome voice. I love Glee. But we have to way like a decade before it comes to the Middle Earth (New Zealand)
67 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:58 pm
OMG, I love this song. Crystal owns. Did y’all read that she was going to quit?
68 Why inspirational? // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:58 pm
lolololololololol
69 Robyn // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:58 pm
Crystal was amazing!!!!! *Stands and applauds*
70 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:58 pm
ALEX IS MY WINNER.
71 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:58 pm
Damn, that Crystal is talented! An “a capella” night would separate the stars from the wannabees!
72 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 8:59 pm
Is that a bong in her mike? It IS 4/20!
73 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:00 pm
, I had heard she thought about quitting at one point, but didn’t hear why. Can you fill us in?
74 Leslaki // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:01 pm
Wow, if Crystal doesn’t win this, I’ll be amazed. She’s so consistently excellent.
75 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:01 pm
Idol would like sue or something if she quit. She, Lee or Siobhan should win, in my eyes. Alex would’ve been up there for me too Jebbica. He was cute and had a cool voice – just zero confidence
76 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:02 pm
Watching the voting snipets…did Aaron have to pee? Sure looked like it!
77 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:04 pm
Oooool, can’t wait for Crystal’s performance to view in New Zealand – 9 days away! But will watch online sooner!
78 lizaio // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:04 pm
Crystal can’t quit. Jebb, let’s get on this . Thanks, everyone, for hanging tonight. Check us out tomorrow for Idol Gives Back!
79 Jebbica // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:05 pm
We will have the videos soon out-of-area-ers!
80 Adam // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:06 pm
See ya then, this was fun
81 Deb // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:08 pm
