Hello Folks. Time for some American Idol! Stay with me while I live blog tonight’s show.
So it was supposed to be “Teen Sensation Week” or some such nonsense. Now it’s “Billboard #1 Hits” week and there is no mentor? Is that how it is? Or is there a mentor? It was GOING to be Miley Cyrus, but now it might not? So I don’t get to be mean about Miley Cyrus for two hours? Shucks.
Blah blah blah, the judges talk. Ryan talks to the judges. Pure crap falls out of Kara’s mouth onto her partially-bared shoulder. She tugs at Simon’s V-neck sweater that Ryan makes fun of. Simon is very tan.
OK, so they get to pick number one Billboard Songs from THIS WEEK? Is that what’s going on? But it IS Miley Montana…I mean Hannah Cyrus…I mean Miley Cyrus. I honestly don’t think that she is talented, and the way she talks makes me want to gnaw on rocks.
OK good. It isn’t the top songs this week – it is the #1 Billboard songs EVER. Lee DeWyze is singing “The Letter” by The Box Tops. RIP Alex Chilton. I love this song. I don’t know how much I love Lee, but he doesn’t suck.
Simon’s going to say that this was cheesy, and I have to criticize the shiny suit. The sound was good, and he sung it well…but was it enough?
Randy thought so. Ellen compared Lee to her favorite pen who was running out of ink, but she lit a match underneath it and now her favorite pen is back. Kara said that he “raised the bar for himself.” Not for anyone else. Just for himself. She said that he’d made tremendous progress. Simon was surprised by Lee’s song choice. He didn’t think it was a “recording” performance. He said it was corny. Cheesy, corny, same thing. Then he held Kara’s chin and she made a kissy face. What. Is. With. Them?!?
Paige Miles is next doing some Phil Collins. Right now, during the commercial break, I’m thinking it will be “In The Air Tonight” but The Hubs wishes it was “Sussusudio” or whatever.
We’re back. Ryan is teasing Simon about not having proposed to his girlfriend yet. Meh. Paige is afraid of her shoes. Her little session with Miley taught us that Miley thinks Paige is really pretty, and then she nailed Paige for being pitchy. I think that means that this performance will be painful – “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins.
Oh. She’s nervous. Pitchy. Yikes. In her defense, she has had laryngitis. But at this point in the competition, I don’t know that will help her. That was a terrible performance. Just awful. It pained me to hear it. Let’s go to the judges.
Randy said it was terrible. Ellen tried to start off positive, and then ended up skipping the critique of the performance altogether. Kara said it was both Paige’s and THE SEASON’S worst vocal. Simon asked Paige how she thought she did. She admitted that she was pitchy. Simon said it was like there were five of Paige singing the song and that it got progressively worse. Simon thinks she’s in trouble. Kara and Simon both think that it is like Paige has just stopped competing totally. I think she was sick last week, and her voice failed her in some way, but that these vocals went beyond a healing voice. This was BAD. BAD.
Tim Urban is singing “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen. Miley doesn’t think he’s boring, and she gave him a hug and two thumbs up. Let’s see how he does.
…………………………………………………………………………wha? what happened? oh. he slid across the stage, and then hopped into the crowd. Oh. He’s still singing. He’s fondling the audience’s fingers. Oh yeah, and still singing…………………..huh? Oh sorry. Must have nodded off.
Randy was also bored by the vocals. Me and Randy. Agreeing. Ellen felt like it was an audition for “High School Musical” or something. She didn’t get it. Kara said it was Zac Efron and Hairspray and that he wasn’t established enough to fondle the audience’s fingers. That was mean, and he’ll probably get sympathy votes. Simon said it was pointless and silly, and that he was surprised that the song ever made it to the top, because he was bored. Me too. I was bored to snoozes.
Now we’re to Boy Wonder – Aaron Kelly. He caught the laryngitis that has been going around. He is a little cutie pie. He has a little crush on Miley. By “little crush” I think he meant “peeing in my tight jeans and weak in the knees.” He’s singing “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” by Aerosmith. I thought this song was boring when it came out, but it IS pretty.
Man. I bet he is in a lot of pain right now. Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx and can be quite painful. Tonsillitis is what I got when I was three and had to get an operation and ate ice cream a lot.
Randy loved it. Ellen loved it. Kara loved it. They all acknowledged that it wasn’t pitch-perfect, but how could it be with a severe inflammation of the larynx and tonsillitis? Simon said he was really “a little tryer” and that there was zero chance that Aaron be going home. He also said that Aaron should give Miley a call. Miley didn’t look thrilled at that suggestion.
Crystal Bowersox is doing “Me and Bobby McGee” by Janis Joplin. She totally blew my expectations and got Miley to sign her guitar. What? I guess she is powerful and beautiful, with big beautiful teeth.
Crystal was perfect. Randy said “that’s what it’s called being a star” and he was right. He is so happy now. Ellen drives. Who knew? I would think that she’d have a driver. I would. Anyway. She thinks that Crystal needs to connect more with the audience. She said there was something between her and the audience. I have guesses as to what it is. Kara thinks she might need to put the guitar down. Simon wouldn’t change a thing, and thought Crystal did the version as well as Pink did that version.
Huh. Crystal has a rug that she brings with her, and she and Ryan sat down on it. Ryan was funny about it, but I can’t remember what he said.
So, while we have a commercial break, I would like to interject that there are three possible types of laryngitis. Viral, bacterial, and a form that is simply caused by vocal strain. That’s probably what they all have. The vocal strain kind.
Big Mike Lynche is next. He hugged Miley and picked her up off the ground. She is grating on me less as this episode goes on. I think maybe she’s (dare I say it?) genuine? She really liked Mike, either way.
He’s singing “When A Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge. Will he sing the Percy version or the Michael Bolton version? Sounds like a mix of both. I love his smoky rich voice. I also love that he didn’t try to sing this song outside of his range. So he doesn’t have the greatest range in the world. At least he knows how to use the voice he’s got. And he’s got a nice falsetto. Yay Big Mike. Smootches!
Randy liked it. Ellen loved it. Kara think Mike lost his connection. Simon said it was like 11 scoops of ice cream when you only wanted 1.
We’re back with Andrew Garcia. He’s doing “I Heard it Through The Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye. He got all nervous in front of Miley and forgot the lyrics. I hope he doesn’t forget them during his performance. I already don’t like this arrangement.
OK. I didn’t like that. It wasn’t as bad as Paige or Tim, though, so he might be safe. Randy didn’t like it. He said it wasn’t good – it was the wrong song choice for Andrew’s vocals. Ellen didn’t like it either, but hopes his fans vote for him. Kara didn’t like it, and suggested that Andrew go back to the fire that made him spark in Hollywood. Simon says that Andrew should have been able to do it by now, and that Andrew doesn’t know who he is as an artist. He said he sucked the soul out of the song.
Katie Stevens is up next with “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. This should be interesting, because that song was done in falsetto. So. Did I mention I can’t wait for GLEE! to start? Aha. She’s doing “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by FERGIE. That’s much more her speed. That’s a good song I think. Fergie sings it really well. Miley liked Katie. Katie liked Miley. Their new-found friendship will prompt Katie to sing REALLY well.
So far so good. She hits the notes, but I feel like this isn’t a natural place for her voice to be. Am I crazy? She needs to be careful or she’ll get the polyps. This guy I once knew? Joe? He got the polyps from straining his voice all the time. So, Katie should take a lesson from that. But…
Randy thought it was a little pitchy, but that Katie was listening to feedback. Ellen thought it was Katie’s best performance so far. Kara asked Simon if he still thought Katie was country – because Kara thinks pop with an R & B vibe is where Katie should stay. Simon is still not sure – he thinks Katie might find more loyalty in a country market. I think that’s entirely possible.
The Guy Who Was Exploited, aka Casey James, is up next. He’s doing “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis & The News. He told Miley he was a big fan of her dad’s. She gave him some feedback – telling him to make eye contact with the crowd.
I might have dropped the horns from the arrangement to make it a little more rock, a little less…I don’t know…Huey. He had the opportunity to really change this song up a lot. I think she should have done it. His voice is great, of course, but I’m a little disappointed.
Randy and Ellen liked it, but didn’t love the song choice. Kara said that Casey was on another level, and ready to make an album. Simon didn’t agree. He thought it was an exact remake of the 80’s song (that he said was outdated when it was first released) and that it was not current or that good. What did you think?
Didi Benami is up next. She’s singing “You’re No Good” by Linda Ronstadt. She looks great. You know? I think she sang her little guts out. Sure, she was pitchy, but her style is sort of pitchy.
Randy said he loved the idea of it, but he thought the pitch was a real problem. Ellen didn’t get the song choice. Kara felt like she was playing a character (wanna be Siobhan, what?) and that Didi was trying to be something she wasn’t. Simon was just downright mean, saying there was irony involved in Didi “screeching” out “you’re no good, you’re no good, you’re no good” and that it didn’t sound like her.
Siobhan Magnus is up next, and she’s doing Stevie Wonder (”Superstition”), which may or may not be fabulous. Jebbica is right, though. Her hair is rockin’. Siobhan was very polite to Miley, who was already a fan. Siobhan admitted that she had, on occasion, “rocked out” to Miley Cyrus and Miley in turn said that Siobhan’s voice has a “swagger.” Talk about a mutual admiration society here…
OK. She rocks. Simon’s going to think this performance is old-fashioned, and might even suggest that last week Siobhan should have gone last and this week Crystal should have. Unless Siobhan pulls out some amazing….oh. Never mind. That was amazing. The big note was good. Miley chomped her gum and gave Siobhan the thumbs-up.
Randy started out by talking about how fearless Siobhan is, and how he loved it that she sang that song. Ellen loved it and wants to watch her “more” (like Oliver), and Kara said that Siobhan expresses herself every time she performs. Duh. Isn’t that what singing is? Expression? Siobhan does it well. Byegones. Simon thought she didn’t hit notes as well as she should have.
All in all, Simon thought the only performance worth a darn was Crystal. I agree that Crystal is in a different league, but Siobhan was good, and so was Big Mike and Katie. What do you think? Don’t forget to vote tonight, guys, because after tonight we can’t count on the rest of America to save our faves. Do it! Pick up the phone.

10 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:09 pm
Eric I think we typed that at the same time! Sheryl, don’t worry. You will definitely know when I think someone sucks. I don’t hold back.
Miley Cyrus gives me high blood pressure. Like a little yapping dog.
11 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:09 pm
She sounds like she has braces on…she needs to go to speech class!
12 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:09 pm
Why is Mentor Miley not wearing any pants?
13 Sheryl // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:11 pm
LOL!! I don’t think anyone on this blog holds back. Ok, they hold back just enough to pass the Eric test.
14 Idol-Mania-Eric // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:13 pm
LOL , it’s the Advertisers test…
Lee reminds me of a less Hip Elliott Yamin, but he did great job..
15 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:13 pm
Lee has “raised the bar”…really, Kara? Really?! I thought that was terrible. It was like GRUNT-GRUNT-LETTER…BLAH BLAH BLAH OOOOHHHH!!!

18 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:16 pm
I am tired of Kris Allen’s Ford Commercial. It’s like he’s trying to keep any inflection whatsoever out of his voice. In other news, I want to see Clash of the Titans REAL BAD.
19 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:16 pm
Eric – ha!
20 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:18 pm
I want one of those Fords every time I see that commercial! And more so, I want one of those army jackets like he wears for Nathan!
And Eric, I will be sure to not be calling that number.
21 Sheryl // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:20 pm
Why does Kris Allen load up his own CD in his Ford?
Cause no one else bought his CD.
22 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:21 pm
OMG, I love this song. I really heart the Postal Service version. Don’t screw it up, pretty Paige!
23 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:22 pm
Oops, too late.
Am I terrible because I totally like Kris Allen? I never change his song if I happen to be listening to crappy pop radio.
24 Idol-Mania-Eric // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:22 pm
Paige Miles Just got voted Off American Idol…
25 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:22 pm

26 Idol-Mania-Eric // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:24 pm
Yo, wow, you Dog… Yes it was Terrible,,,, Say goodnight Grayce, I mean Paige and my Original pre-season predictions of a Female Ethnic Winner
27 Seth // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:26 pm
Hey ya’ll! Been a while I know, but I actually have a little free time. I’m on Paige’s critique right now, because I have the show DVR’d. Next commercial I will be up to speed.
28 Idol-Mania-Eric // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:26 pm
Tim takes on Queen — this will be another Train Wreck
29 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:27 pm
I wish Paige had just said “Yeah, sorry guys. That sucked”
30 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:28 pm
Hi Seth! You’re up to speed. I’m publishing as I go, so Tim is next.
31 Sheryl // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:28 pm
Do the Idol contestants look baffled because they are being mentored by a talentless gazillionia?
32 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:28 pm
Hi, Seth!
33 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:28 pm
I mean, let us know when you’re up to speed. Yikes. Sorry. Brain. No function.
34 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:29 pm
Miley annoys me to no end, but she is still richer than I will ever be, so RESPECK.
35 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:29 pm
Sheryl – YES. I would be. I would be, like, “really?” I can’t wait to see how Crystal and Siobhan react to her. I can see Siobhan being a little starstruck just because she has eight thousand brothers and sisters, but Crystal? I am curious to see how she reacts to Miley.
36 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:31 pm
My Hubs just called Cyrus an “Ass Clown”
37 Idol-Mania-Eric // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Tim: best performance so far, and that’s not saying much.
40 Sheryl // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:34 pm
I am SOOOO glad that Cait never got into the Hannah Miley crap.
In fact Cait has had excellent taste in music…compared to most people her age.
41 Idol-Mania-Eric // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:35 pm
Plus one Point for Eric For Yo Dog Randy Calling Tim Boring!!! can I get a Simon Point ????
42 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:35 pm
“It was Zac Efron in ‘Hairspray’”…well, guess what? Zac Efron has a gajillion dollars from acting like a HSM nerd!
43 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:36 pm
Yes, she does!
44 Seth // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:39 pm
Is there any chance that barring an absolutely disastrous performance tonight, that Crystal doesn’t win? Discuss.
45 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:40 pm
Was the jist of that Vitamin Water commercial that 1) you will be more attractive to women if you drink Vitamin Water and 2) you will perform better *ahem* physically if you drink it?
46 Idol-Mania-Eric // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:40 pm
By the way Windows 7 was my Idea,, I swear… Meanwhile will someone do something to excite me singing wise before LOST? or It will be a LOST rerun switch and then Read LIZ, Jeb, and Cait in the morning to catch up… soooze
47 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:41 pm
Seth – Siobhan might be a dark horse in the running. Crystal is more controlled, but Siobhan is a wild card.
48 Idol-Mania-Eric // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:43 pm
@ Seth it’s Crystal or Shioban to lose..
@ Liz Vitamin water is a poor man’s Pespi
does she?
Momma Knows Best
49 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:46 pm
you suck so much for getting to watch Lost on the day it actually comes on.
else: Crystal is singing Janis Joplin this week? Really? Chick needs to venture out a couple of weeks if she wants to win! I would LOVE it if Siobhan won, but I think she’s going to be too weird for America.
50 CaitHagar // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:47 pm
Watch Lost on Hulu. ‘Tis what I dooo. Seriously. Lolz! Or just read our post… either way.
51 Seth // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:48 pm
Did Simon just tell Aaron he should give Miley Cyrus a kiss???
I’m not sure who would wear the pants in that relationship.
52 Idol-Mania-Eric // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:51 pm
@ SETH, I think it was go give Miley a Hug, but Simon was trying to start something…LOL
53 Sheryl // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:56 pm
, you be nice to Crystal! But, sure Psycohan can win because most winners don’t do as well as runner ups.
54 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:58 pm
– so you’re Team Crystal too? I, too, would prefer an Idol who does not eat kittens.
55 Idol-Mania-Eric // Mar 23, 2010 at 8:59 pm

I like Crystal & Lee…
I also thought Alex was a miniature Rob Thomas.
The kitten eating thing she may have gotten from Ozzie in his old days.
57 emelotte // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:02 pm
My favorite part was when Randy said, after Crystal’s performance, “I’m so happy now”. He just sounded so sincerely happy
58 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:04 pm
HA! I agree!
– Cait is a really funny girl. I’ve been laughing about that since she wrote it.
59 emelotte // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:05 pm
OH – And I want to see “Clash of the Titans” real bad, too.
60 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:09 pm
Hi, Emelotte!
I liked Crystal tonight. I like her every night. I just know like 50000 people who are exactly like her and are just as good as she is in real life. She just seems like a one-trick pony. I don’t want to be bored! The things that annoyed me last season about Adam thrill me in Siobhan. Don’t know what it is. I might change my mind after hearing her tonight, but her hair is rockin’.
61 emelotte // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:14 pm
like Siobhan too but I’m still living in the past and missing Lilly.
62 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:15 pm
Blah blah blah “Straight Up” blah blah blah…the judges should STFU already. Horrible song choice, but I still like the tone of his voice.
63 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:16 pm
I miss Lilly too! And Alex!
64 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:18 pm
So, can someone tell me who that chick who hawks the Fords who is NOT Kris Allen is? She really gets on my nerves!
65 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:18 pm
Alex. I miss Alex. He was my fave.
66 Sheryl // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:23 pm
, Ford did a long study & lots of testing to find a girl for that commercial. They had to find someone that would irritate you.
I mean, you would get drab if you never found someone to pick on.
67 emelotte // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:26 pm
This is the first week I’ve been able to stand Katie’s performance
68 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:26 pm
– ha!
69 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:35 pm
Aww, am I that mean? But seriously, we all sound horrible in the car, no one wants to hear this girl doing scales!
Is that Huey Lewis himself? Casey is doing a great impression!
70 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:35 pm
GREAT impression.
71 emelotte // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:39 pm
Oh; I’m with Simon on Casey. I lived through the first version and this was no more current than that one
72 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:41 pm
– I meant that it was like Casey was a Huey Lewis cover song.
73 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:42 pm
I didn’t like it, but I think he’s a good singer.
74 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:43 pm
OMG, Didi is pitchy tonight, but I love the tone of her voice so much!
75 Seth // Mar 23, 2010 at 9:54 pm
omg Siobahn looks HOT
76 lizaio // Mar 23, 2010 at 10:00 pm
– I think she’s special.
77 Jebbica // Mar 23, 2010 at 10:01 pm
Wow, so did everyone suck except for Crystal? Katie, Siobhan, and Mike were also okay. Didi, Aaron, and Casey were ehh. Everyone else was bleck.
