8 Men Enter. 8 Men have to wait until tomorrow to find out if they make it into the Top 12 of American Idol’s Season 9 – The Season That Defies Explanation.
I wonder if tonight will be as rushed as last night was. I wasn’t very happy with last night as a whole. Hopefully the boys will do better. I feel like being impressed by more than two contestants.
Lee DeWyze is up first. He’s playing his geetar. I don’t know this song – it’s something about fireflies. I know. I’m so old. OK. I googled. It’s “Fireflies” by Owl City. He was good, but he looked like he was about to burp the whole time. Randy thought it was a “strange song choice” but that Lee made the song his own. Apparently he switched it up, and Ellen thought he was adorable. Kara thought he looked confident, which I guess is the expression that I misinterpreted as burpy. Kara is rubbing her ridiculous sequins into Simon’s shoulder.
So. Lee was aiight. I kind of like him. I sort of feel like we’ve done that whole thing before, what with the Daughtry and the apologetic yet appropriate David Cook thing. But, there is always room in the world for more rock and roll. Plus, he has some dreamy eyes.
Alex Lambert, who is sort of my favorite, sang “Trouble” by Ray LaMontagne which is a really good song. I like him so much. I hope he and his weird little mullet stick around. This performance was a little more nasally than he’s done in the past, but he has such a yummy tone. Randy liked the song choice, but wasn’t thrilled with the performance. Ellen continued with her banana analogy, talking about him consistently getting better and better, just as she consistently uses the banana analogy. She warned him against becoming a “cocky banana” which is just delightful. Kara said some stuff, and I am (despite my ill feelings toward her) starting to think she gives some decent feedback sometimes. I hope Alex stays. Simon wants him to relax. I want him to relax.
Tim Urban is treading on hallowed ground in my world. “Hallelujah” is a great song no matter what, but Jeff Buckley’s version rips my heart out. If it’s done poorly it makes me very, very angry. Tim actually did a pretty good job. He has a really, really good voice. I’m officially impressed. First time tonight. Randy loves that song, and he thought Tim did pretty good too. Ellen worries that she’s been too critical of Tim, and she was so happy with his performance that she ran on stage and hugged him. Kara and Simon liked it too. Go Tim!
Andrew Garcia gets up next, and does “Genie in a Bottle” by Christina Aguilera. I don’t know. I think I’m a little tired of this shtick. It didn’t feel new. That’s the thing. It was really, really good, but it didn’t feel really special to me. Randy likes what Andrew’s wearing, and he made the sucking through his teeth thing. He didn’t like it. Ellen thought it was great, but that Andrew didn’t pull it out soon enough. Kara talked about him peaking so early, which is the main thing. We saw the best of this guy in Hollywood. Simon agreed with Kara. Simon thought it was desperate. That’s what it was.
Casey James (aka The Guy Who Was Objectified) is singing a Keith Urban song that I’m sure Jebbica will ridicule me for not knowing . It was OK. Randy thought it was a safe choice. Ellen said meh, pretty much, but in a nicer Ellen way. Kara said she’s getting “back on the Casey train” and that she wanted to see a little more from him. Does that actually mean that she wants to see a little more OF him? If he makes it should he perform shirtless next week?
Aaron Kelly is singing the treacley Lonestar hit “I’m Already There.” When this song came out I was a wedding DJ, so I heard it a lot. This kid has a great voice, but this arrangement was crap and he sounded nervous. But wow, he has a great tone to his voice. Randy thinks he has the makings of great things. Ellen thinks he’s very self-possessed. She thought he’d sounded better than tonight. I agree. Kara thinks he gives it his all every week, but that a 16-year old shouldn’t sing a song about a guy calling home to talk to his kids. Simon thought that was rubbish, and that it was the right kind of song for Aaron to sing. He thinks it is a nice song.
Todrick Hall is about to sing some Queen, “Somebody to Love.” Yikes. Has he ever heard Freddie Mercury sing this song? It was churchy a little, and that sort of saved it for me. He has good vocals, and was really good. But that song…that song is such an iconic song. Simon thinks he’s a Broadway singer. I think Todrick would like to be on Broadway. I’d love to see him on Broadway. Simon thinks this performance might have saved him.
Big Mike Lynche is up next. He’s singing “This Woman’s Work,” which apparently has some falsetto in the beginning. I’m not at all familiar with this song. But he’s singing the crap out of it. I don’t know how to feel about it, since I don’t know the song at all. Let’s see what the judges say. I thought it was pretty darn good. It kind of melted my face off. Randy loved it. He’s totally freaking out. Ellen loved it. Kara CRIED. Then I kind of cried. Darn you Kara. On so many levels. Simon said it was the best performance of all the live shows so far.
So, who to vote for?
Lee DeWyze – 1-866-IDOLS01
Alex Lambert – 1-866-IDOLS02
Tim Urban – 1-866-IDOLS03
Andrew Garcia – 1-866-IDOLS04
Casey James – 1-866-IDOLS05
Aaron Kelly – 1-866-IDOLS06
Todrick Hall – 1-866-IDOLS07
Mike Lynche – 1-866-IDOLS08
Wow. This is a tough call. Based on tonight’s performances I’m scared for my boy Alex (so I’m going to have to go ahead and vote for him) and I’m scared for Andrew. Based on talent I think it’s tough. What do you think?

You seriously don’t know that song? You never listen to the radio and you have no friends? Seriously, like every single person I know plays that song on repeat. It gets on my nerves because I’ve already heard it before, and it was called “The District Sleeps Alone” by the Postal Service. I’m not a music snob, I swear!

Am not! Just easily bored.
Tim was good…I am shocked! Alex is just the cutest. Love his little dimples! But cut that mullet! Seriously!

It’s darn near impossible to find a photo of this Tim Urban on the internet. It’s all about the other Tim Urban. It’s like he’s in an SEO war with American Idol.

Big Mike! What’s he gonna do?

Jeff Buckley’s version rips my heart out, too. You don’t know the Keith Urban song, either? You’ve never worked anywhere, obviously. I hear that song at least 50 times a day. It’s not my choice that I know the words to every pop and country song there is, believe me. But I kind of like that song…”take your cat and leave my sweater, b/c we have nothing left to weather.” Heh.

Alex Lambert needs to be introduced to Jason Castro so he can get some of that stuff that relaxes you before the shows. I’m just sayin’.

I think Jason’s problem was that he had a little too much about that stuff, anyway. He probably has plenty to share.
12 Jebbica // Mar 10, 2010 at 10:18 pm
Maybe Crystal, Lilly, Andrew, and Casey can share their stash with Aaron, Alex, Katey, and Paige. That should make for fun TV!

Oh, and I’m making my own images for my recap because I don’t want to go through the mess of Googling (especially Casey James). But that’s why it’s taking me so long!

Jason Castro’s Hallelujah was definitely much better. Tim can sing, but I personally didn’t feel any emotion in it. Alex has such a unique voice I’m guessing no matter when he goes he’ll have a record coming out.
