American Idol Season 9 Hollywood Round 3 Top 24 So Far

Last night was interesting.  I know it’s lame to quote Ryan, but this really IS the turning point of the season.  This is when we slough off the thickest layers of nonsense and dummy background stories and start the competition in earnest.  I’m going to skip over the first hour of last night’s show, as you have fabulous live blogging from Jebbica and a terrific recap from Cait to take you through all that.  I’m just going to talk a little about the 7 people who have definitely made it through to the Top 24.  To see the spoiler list of Top 24 peeps, go here.

First to make it through is my man “Big Mike” Lynche.  It’s been hard not to get emotionally invested in this sweet-natured teddy bear of a guy whose wife had their first baby at the beginning of Hollywood Week.  Big Mike is a guy who wants to provide for his family, sure, but he’s also got a great voice and fantastic stage presence.  There are rumors that Big Mike has been disqualified, but all reports I can find say “allegedly” and “reportedly” he’s been sent packing because his Dad leaked the good news to a local newspaper.  All I can say is that I hope it’s not so.  He’s still on the AI website, so I’m going to continue to hope.  Joe’s Place says he won’t be removed from the Top 24, so there you go.

Next to make it through is Didi Benami.  Didi is soulful and also heartbroken, because her very best friend Rebecca died in a tragic car accident in December of 2005.  Rebecca was a singer and songwriter, so Didi has dedicated her American Idol journey to her lost friend.  There are rumors she is a plant, but I imagine anyone who chose to sing a Kara-written song would run into the same allegations.  Didi has talent, and there is no denying that, so who cares where she came from?

Next up, Katelyn Epperly, who is trying to put some joy back into her family because of her parent’s impending divorce.  She’s an Iowa resident who impressed judges at the Chicago audition.  She’s the lead singer of a band called Katelyn and the Bruises, and while some people have groused that she really isn’t that good, I think she’s got potential.  I guess we’ll see what happens.

So now we will talk about The Guy Who Was Objectified, Casey James.  Despite the fact that Kara made him take his shirt off at his first audition (ahem…sexual harassment, anyone?) he has a neat voice and he makes interesting song choices.  He did “Bubbly” and it was delightful.  Of course, during the end “let’s tell them nice and slow” part of the show, Kara sort of drooled over him a whole lot.  Who knows?  Maybe Casey likes a good cougar now and then.  Incidentally, unless you want a horrible shock, don’t google “Casey James” for images.  Yikes.

Aaron Kelly also made it through to the Top 24.  He is the fella who has been raised by his aunt, and calls her “Mom.”  He also has a whole website of his own that does not mention the fact that he’s on the Top 24 on American Idol.  Um, time for an update, Webmaster!  He seems like a nice kid, who likes music most of all, but also likes roller coasters and going on vacation with his family.  I like that he’s wholesome, and I understand the comparisons to Archuleta.

Todrick Hall jokingly (or was it jokingly?) proposed to a girl right before we find out about him, so I’m glad he made it through, otherwise she would have been all “Some dude who didn’t make the Top 24 proposed to me at the hotel.”  Now she might actually give him her number.  Though his myspace page says he’s in a relationship.  Did he update that after he proposed?  He’s a cutie, and he’s done musical theater with Fantasia and even wrote his own musical.  He’s likable.  I like him.

Last for this list is Lee DeWyze.  All the IMing I was doing last night had a common theme when it came to this guy – who is he?  Remember guys, we have this every year – somebody they didn’t concentrate on in the audition stage but makes it through.  Sometimes it’s because they are really good, which I suspect is the case with Lee.  I vaguely remember him from the auditions, and maybe he’ll do great things.  According to VoteForTheWorst.com he did his audition with “The Beautiful People.”  Come to think of it, I would have remembered that, so I have no idea what to expect from Lee, who has his own band.

OMG, so…I just had to Google Image search “Casey James” after I read that. At work. Yikes! Glad no one else was around!

And, “The Beautiful People”? The Manson song, or am I thinking of something completely different?
