Auditions are finally over!! And so now we finally get to deal with all the drama of Hollywood Week. And oh, am I forgetting something? ELLEN!!
Ellen Degeneres has assumed her position, which is at Simon’s left side on the bench. At first the Hollywood kids will break off into groups. In the first group are Katie Stevens aka “My Grandmother has Alzheimer’s”, and Skii-Bo-Ski Baby! Katie is praised by the judges, but Ellen finds Skiiboski “frightening”. The groups are divided into two lines, and not surprisingly, Katie’s in, Skiiboski’s out.
Ellen is cracking jokes and being very Ellen-y, which is a great asset to this show. Andrew Garcia returns and does an awesome version of “Straight Up” by Paula Abdul. Someone make this guy the winner already! He wasted that song on Hollywood Week, but it was very cool. Country girl Vanessa Wolf follows and is very nervous. I identify with her so much! My accent isn’t quite that bad, but I definitely feel the small town girl thing! Her audition of Blind Melon’s “No Rain” wasn’t too great, but Ellen was nice to her. However, Andrew’s in, Vanessa’s out.
Cornelius “I Done Split My Pants” Edwards, Megan Wright, and Amadeo DiRocco, all featured during the auditions, were sent home. I always wonder why they bother with feature stories when most of them just get cut during Hollywood Week! Janelle Wheeler?? Was that her last name? She wowed the judges with an acoustic version of “American Boy”. A lot of people are choking. Haley Vaughn, the African American country cutie pie, gave another great performance, and can I just say that I LOVE her?
Mary Powers, the rocker chick, sang a Pink song and sounded pretty much just like Pink. But both Mary and Haley were given another chance. The show is halfway over, and 46 contestants have survived Day One.
It’s Day Two, and Beat Boxer Jay Stone bombs. Lilly Scott, a girl with white hair and peacock earrings, nailed her auditions. I loved her voice! Guess who’s in and who’s out?
Big Mike Lynche’s wife went into labor right before his audition! Was he there for his first child’s birth? No, he was singing John Mayer for Simon! Justin Williams, the cancer survivor, is among the next group of contenders. He sounds very Freddie Mercury-ish, and surprisingly, he goes home, unlike some other guy who was terrible. The Jersey Girls also went home…shocker!
Maddie Curtis, the girl with a brother with Down Syndrome, was back and sounded better to me than she did in her audition. Casey James, the Sawyer-from-Lost lookalike who took his shirt off, sounded MUCH better with his guitar! Now if he could just combine the lack of shirt with a guitar, he’d be awesome. Casey’s through, but Maddie goes home.
There’s five minutes left in the show, and we’re down to the last group. Didi Benami, one of my favorites during the auditions, is in this group. She sings a Kara Dioguardi song, and I still love it! I love this girl. The judges loved her, too. Crystal “Chin Stud” Bowersox also received the judges’ praise. But no one should get too excited, because there are about 90-something people who survived the first cut, and we have to whittle it down to 24! Tomorrow night is group round! See ya then!

They didn’t show her in tonight’s episode, but according to the spoilers, Rose Flack, the hippie chick who was cut during Hollywood Week in Season 8, made it through this time.

Love…luv…luv …that little vaughn girl. She reminds me of Tracey Chapman ressurected. Chapman was beloved by millions. I predict she will travel and sell out worlwide as she is “unique” and her singing with her eyes just puts a smile in ones heart. Go Haley go!!.
