This is Marvin Calderon Jr. He will be trying out for American Idol Season 9, in Los Angeles. He has a good voice and definitely has a chance with Idol. I watched his videos and thought he would be uber cool to write about so that not only could more people see him, but when he becomes famous, I can say I got one of his first online interviews. Lolz!
Here is the interview, read it and find out more about a possible future American Idol.
Me: Who inspires you?
Marvin:
Who inspires me the most when it comes to my dream of being a singer is my 21 year old brother and my 14 year old sister. I say this because they fully support me. My brother Martin and my sister Mirabelle sing too. We all share this passion. They are my best critics, and my best supporters. I think I’m pretty lucky to have them because I believe in myself more when I have people believing in me. Whenever I’m in a competition, or whenever I get to sing in a show, they give me suggestions in song choices, they give me opinions on how to do better, and what works and what doesn’t. I am more passionate about singing because of them.
Me: What kind of music would you see yourself doing?
Marvin:
I love R&B. I’d definitely be open to try different genres of music from jazz to traditional pop, but I love contemporary R&B and soul music. If I ever had the chance to make a record or produce an album, I would love for it to be a “feel-good” album filled with soulful songs and even some current hip-hop too. I’d love to be like the artists I look up to in the mainstream music industry right now—– John Legend and Ne-Yo.
Me: Out of ALL the people on American Idol, who was your favorite?
Marvin:
Hands down, Elliott Yamin, the Season 5 third placer of American Idol is my favorite contestant. I favor Elliott Yamin because personally I think he has one of the best male vocals I have ever heard. And I can hear the soulfulness in his songs and I see his passion when he performs. He sings from the heart, and I look up to him for that. Another thing I like about Yamin is that he didn’t let anything stop him from singing. Though he has 90% hearing loss in his right ear, and has to deal with diabetes, it isn’t holding him back at all! I admire that. His voice is powerful.
Me: How long have you been singing and playing the piano?
Marvin:
When I was growing up, at first, all I did was play piano. I went to a music studio in San Diego and played classical piano since I was 8 years old, and my brother and sister were the singers of the family. When I was about 11 or 12, I gave singing a try for the first time, and since then, I love to sing. It’s funny because everyone knew me as the classical pianist, and I think I kind of surprised everyone when I started singing. I joined a lot of singing competitions and shows and it gave me the experience and the confidence. And when I was around 17 or 18, I expanded my horizons in piano and started learning contemporary songs, and slowly learned how to play and sing together, which definitely takes a lot of practice. And now at 19 years old, I still play classical piano once in a while, but I sing all the time and try to play piano and sing together often.
Me: If there could be anyone you could sing with, who would it be?
Marvin:
I would love to collaborate with John Legend. He is my inspiration in music. I want to be able to have soulful piano ballads like him. There’s something about his music that is really captivating. It would be awesome if I got the chance to sing with him! John Legend is versatile too, because he not only has power ballads with piano, but recently produced some really great lite funk and reggae records on his new album. He’s an amazing musician, and it would be unreal if I got to sing with him.
This is the song that he might be going to try out for Idol with.
I know that American Idol does not show their auditions till January, so I’ll just wait patently to see him on TV. Lolz!
We wish you the BEST of luck and hope you get to sing with John Legend on the show. :]
Be sure and leave a comment of encouragement.
[Update]
“I registered at LA Rose Bowl Sunday morning, got there around 2am! I’d say there were about 200-300 people in front of me when I lined up, so I wasn’t that far from the front! So I’m all wristbanded up, and ready to audition tomorrow. It’s the scariest thing, I’ve never been so nervous!”
Oooooh, I would probably crap myself. Haha! Just wanted to give you an update from Marvin.
