American Idol Season 8 Jan 14 2009 Kansas City

Tickets to Hollywood:

Casey Carlson, a cutie with great smile, sang “1000 Miles” by Vanessa Carlton, and got a ticket to Hollywood.

Von Smith, with a white hat cocked to the side…had both his good and bad moments. He sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.  Not sure whether he is the next big thing or jeer-worthy, he got a surprising ticket to Hollywood.

Michael Castro, brother of last season’s Jason Castro, decided he could sing, too. He claimed he started singing twenty days before audition. He sang “In Love with a Girl” by Gavin DeGraw.  Yeah, ridin’ on brother’s coattails! I kinda miss that “whoa” vibe from last year. :)

Matt Brietzke, a blue-collar husband and father, sang a soulful version of  Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”. After a “no” from Randy, the other three judges said, “get your butt to Hollywood!”

Jessica Paige Furney, sang “Crybaby” by Janis Joplin. We were led to think she was going to be awful, and she was actually not that bad. Probably one of the better ones of the night so far.

India Morrison, see below in the “baddies” section.

Jamar Rogers sang “California Dreamin’ ” by the Mommas and the Poppas.  His best friend from Idol, Danny, is coming up soon, someone they’ve been hyping all show about having an inspirational tale.

Danny Gokey, BFF with Jamar, recently lost his beautiful wife to health reasons.  He sang “I Heard it Through the Grapevine”, singing another one of the night’s bests.

Anoop Desai, a cute Kal Penn lookalike, sang a Boyz 2 Men song and blew the judges away. Unlike the next montage of people who sang “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”!

Asa Barnes, a marching band director and dad, sang “The Way You Make Me Feel” by Michael Jackson. Great big smile, reminiscent of Chris Brown.

Dennis Brigham, an eccentric kid, sang “With You” by Chris Brown, then launched into a John Legend song.  After a no from Simon, he actually got passed through! Don’t see him making it very far, but he had a gimmick!

Lil Rounds, a mother of three, and the last contestant of the night. She also has an interesting back story, as a tornado destroyed her family’s apartment. She sang her rendition of  “A Little More” (?) by Stevie Wonder.

Notable Baddies:

Vaughn English, aka “The Banana Guy”. Head-to-toe in yellow, singing about bananas, holding the sunny fruit–in rubber form!

Jasmine Joseph, or maybe she is Jazz-man Joseph, a 17-year-old with red and purple hair, sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. She killed it. Literally. That song is now deader than a doornail.

Asia McClain and India Morrison, “The Rapper Twins”, sing “Cookies”, an original song. I think.  Then they are made to sing. One is horrible, one not-so-horrible.  Of the two sisters, Asia gets a no and India a yes!

A montage of girls, who were cringe-worthy at best and had my dogs barking like crazy!

Weird Cheerleaders…um….who introduced Andrew Lang, a geeky-looking dude who sang “My Girl”. After getting almost-yeses for his theater-like voice, he was sent back without a golden ticket.

Michael Nicewonder, whose mother obviously thinks she failed at motherhood when she had him.  Nice though he is, a wonder he is not.

Mia Conley: tonedeaf would be a nice term to describe her. She sang “Lovin’ You” of course, one of the hardest songs to sing EVER.

So, who out of these will make it to the Top 24? I have a few guesses on who WON’T…but I guess we’ll never know until we get to see ALL of the singers!

Hi, I would like your opinions about Simon’s comment to a contestant named Kelly at the end of Kansas city audition:

Simon: “Kelly, just to be clear that the first record you bought was Paula’s, right?”

Then Paula seemed upset. I just didn’t get why.
Please help me to understand what’s going on!

    Thank you!

    Mari
