It’s the first night of Hollywood Week! We’re promised lots of drama. We supposedly already know who’s in the top 36, but hopefully it will be fun watching the ride!
This is the first year that the producers have mandated an Idol Boot Camp, complete with vocal coaches, stylists, and Barry Manilow!
Lil Rounds and Dennis Brigham from Kansas City are the first two to sing a capella for the judges. Lil Rounds sings “I Will Always Love You”, an okay rendition IMHO, that the judges loved. Dennis wasn’t accepted so warmly. He goes home, but not without a fight!
Half of the contestants are trying to make it through the first round, while the other half is having fun in the sun.
The next group contains Nathaniel Marshall, Jasmine Murray, Anoop Desai (Noop Dog! <3), Michael Castro, and Rose Flack. The entire group goes through. Yay, Anoop!

Icky Von Smith is up next, along with Jorge Nunez and Steven Fowler. Steven and Jorge were pretty great! Von’s okay, he’s just too yell-y for me! I could definitely do without him, and Simon agrees. However, they all three make it to the next round.
Next we’re led into a slew of contestants who picked the wrong song.
Norman Gentle is next! I can’t believe he made it to the next round. Now he’s Nick Mitchel, but still in his Norman gear. Does he secretly work for Vote for the Worst? You can tell he does not take this seriously at all. And that’s why I love him. He’s like a breath of fresh air. I can’t believe he made it through to the next round! Frankie Jordan and Scott MacIntire also make it through.
It’s the other half’s turn. Man, doesn’t that suck for the Day 1 people who got sent home without a vacation?
Jackie Tohn, the actress, is the first up from Day 2. She sounds a lot like Amanda Overmeyer. She’s through, along with hippie John Twiford and a few others.
Danny Gokey and Jamar Rogers, BFFs, are next. They both did a great job and are through to the next round.
Katrina Darrell, “Bikini Girl” gets her next chance. She’s horrible again, but the men are smitten. Guess I’m missing a certain body part to hear what a nice voice she really has, because she’s through to the next round. One of the girls I liked, Jessica Furney, was not so lucky.
Jeremy Michael Sarver and Jesus Valenzuela get their next chances, but only Jeremy gets through.
David Osmond, Erica Wesley, and Emily Wynn-Hughes are some of the last contestants to get their chances. Emily and David are through for another day. Erica isn’t taking her no vote so well and asks for another chance. She gets denied.
104 contestants are left standing at the end of the episode. So, they didn’t cut that many! Tomorrow is group night.
