Kai Kalama was the sob story of the San Francisco American Idol Season 8 auditions. He takes care of his mother, who has seizures, by day and is a musician by night. Despite Simon saying he sounded like “a ship singer”, he had a smile and charisma and had a decent rendition of “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”.
