American Idol Top 10 March 25, 2008 Performance Recap and Review 3-25-08

Or should we say American Idol gets more Cheesier at the Top 10 Round?
We are down to the Top 10 on American Idol and on 3-25-08 the contestants were to sing songs from the year of their birth. All of them did so with the exception of David Archuleta who actually sang a song written from 1986 but covered from 1990 by David Foster. This was exceptionally weird and we covered that in an earlier post.
Ramiele Malubay was the first to take the American Idol Stage. Since Ramiele was born in 1987, she
chose to sing the song “Alone” by Heart. To me this was a boring song and boring performance. I am tired of all the ballads and Ramiele Malubay may just have to go sooner rather than later.
Judge Randy Jackson said, “I know you are under the weather, but that regardless, it wasn’t the right choice, Not your thing, Pitchy.” . Judge Paula Abdul says, “I give you a tremendous amount of credit and brave ” for going through with it despite being sick. Judge Simon Cowell says, “I don’t think it was as bad as Randy said. I thought the first part of the song was OK.” Simon also quipped, that if she survived on last week’s “appalling” performance, she will be fine with this one.
Jason Castro was the second performer on the March 25, 2008 American Idol Top 10 performance show.
Jason was born on March 25, 1987 so today for his birthday he chose Sting’s “Fragile.” He brought out his comfortable guitar to sing and play the Sting song.
Randy said “ I love the song, good choice, I liked the Spanish touch it was nice, but I am waiting to see you jump out with a vocal performance” Paula says he’s staying true to who he is and his niche, but there wasn’t a big wow factor. Simon says he’s had two bad weeks, “and I think it’s time for you to start taking this seriously.” He compares it to someone busking outside the subway station. “You’re not going to win if you keep doing that week after week.”
More after the Jump
Syesha Mercado is another 1987 baby. She sings “If I Were Your Woman.“American Idol Judge Randy Jackson thought, “This is the best I have ever heard you sing, including when you auditioned. It was stellar, it was unbelievable. I am shocked.” Sober Paula Abdule said ” this is going to be the moment that everyone remembers as when “Syesha flipped it” and became a contender“. Simon agrees that it was the best so far, but he thinks she was reaching her limit toward the end of the song.I just wasn’t impressed with this either. But the night did get better and there were several memorable performances.
Chikezie Eze was the 4th to sing on the American Idol March 25, 2008 Show. Chikezie was born in 1985, and sang “If Only for One Night” by Luther Vandross
Judge Randy says “very old-school, I didn’t love it”. He missed the vibe and energy from some of Chikezie’s other performances. Paula says he’s a throwback, but “a good throwback.” “I think that you did a great job.” Simon says, “I think you sang it well. Having said that, the performance was actually very cheesy.” Simon adds that he didn’t see any originality.
It wasn’t really cheesy, if you want cheesy Simon just wait for Kristy Lee Cook. That was pure Cheddar. But did Simon Call her out for it? Nadda..
At the halfway point and 5th Idol to take the Stage we got to view Brooke White.
Brooke White was born in 1983, and for her song she picked “Every Breath You Take.” by The Police
American Idol Judge Randy Jackson says he liked the first part, but he didn’t love the arrangement toward the middle or end. Paula: “I enjoyed this performance so much more than last week’s.” She says Brooke has her own niche and her own voice, and she appreciates her consistency. Simon agrees with Randy, especially about the band joining in toward the end, which he says made it sound old-fashioned. Still, he says, she will be fine and through to next week.
Brooke White on the Piano and singing is always a wonderful performance. I agree with the Judges, that she didn’t need the band behind here and just her on the Piano singing would be an awesome performance.
Australian Michael Johns was born in 1978 and picked the Queen Classics. Michael combined “We Will Rock You,” and after a couple of lines, he
jumped over to “We Are the Champions” by Queen. These two songs are normally thought of as one anyway, but he did an awesome job this evening.
Randy: “That was the best performance for me since you’ve been on this show.” Paula says this was his moment, “and I’m so proud of you.” American Idol Judge Simon Cowell said, “Michael, this is the first time with you that I’ve seen star potential. You just got it right. … For me, it’s the only memorable performance of the night so far.”

In the Lucky 7th position the “Irish Girl” Carly Smithson came up to sing. Carly Hennessey Smithson was born in 1983, and sang “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” originally from Bonnie Tyler. She is a good job.
Randy says it was an interesting song choice, and that he didn’t love the note at the end. “I don’t like the whole rock thing,” he adds. Paula thinks he’s crazy and says Carly could take any song Paula didn’t really like and make her a believer. But then I think Paula’s crazy because she gives Carly credit for that last awful note. “That run at the end was not in tune, Paula,” Randy rightly points out. Simon says that something didn’t quite work. He says she seemed uptight and tense, which prevented him from enjoying the performance. I thought Carly did an excellent job with this song.

Eighth up was Wunderboy and Robot Singer David Archuleta. Since David Archuleta was born in 1990, he picked a song written in 1986 and covered in 1990 by David Foster.
He sang “You’re the Voice,” which nobody ever heard before. Why the song choice? David Foster behind the scenes deal with Papa Archuleta and I-tunes Maybe? Humm. This smells even more Cheesy, but one of the cheese’s that stink!!!
Randy says it was a strange song choice, “but if you can sing, you can sing whatever.” Paula says she was also confused by the song choice, but that he “could sing the phone book.” Simon says he sang it well in parts, but, “I actually didn’t like the performance at all. I thought it was reminiscent of a theme-park performance. It was one of those ghastly songs you sing with animated characters around you, and everyone joins in.”
“Honey, Turn the Volume Down, Kristy Lee Cook is Coming On” can be heard in Millions of households across the country.
In the 9th spot Kristy Lee Cook came up to bore us all. Kristy Lee Cook was born in 1984, and sang “God Bless the U.S.A.”
Randy says it was “a great song choice, I love that song.” He thought it was a great performance. Paula says she has heard better performances from her, but her voice is getting stronger. Simon says this was her best performance by a mile. “That was the most clever song choice I have heard in years. … That’s going to keep you in the competition.”
Ok ,I am as patriotic as the next person, but this was Pure Cheddar, even worse that what they attempted to pin on Chikezie. The Cheesy factor dripped all over the stage. It was her lame attempt to get middle American behind her with a patriotic song and she sucked doing it. Remove KLC ASAP!
The final singer of the night and in the Prime Spot was David Cook. David was born in 1982 and sang “Billie Jean.” This was not the Michael Jackson Thriller Version Either.
Randy calls him the most original, most bold contestant ever, and adds that with that performance, he might win the whole thing. Paula says he’s brilliant, and she thinks he can win this. Simon: “David, that was brave. It could have either been insane or amazing, and I have to tell you, it was amazing.”
You have to Catch the D Cook’s Billy Jean video
At least we ended the show with out more dripping cheese, thanks to David Cook and Michael Lee Johns.

I am with you on KLC. Get that girl off of Idol and into a County Fair! She just comes off as a cheap LeAnne Rymes (sp?) knockoff and I’m not too keen on the original. And as far as David Cook being the most original, sure he takes chances, but he’s not really original if he’s ripping off other rock band’s versions of remakes from week to week. I like Castro and Brooke, but they don’t seem very Idol-y to me. I don’t know…this season is weird!

Hey, I liked KLC’s rendition of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.” She might not be the best contestant but she did a great job last night. I didn’t see anything cheesy about it, but I can see why people might think that way. You know, anything patriotic is going to come off as cheesy…

This is how “bold” and “original” David Cook is … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnYo4tKBG9s
IMO it’s the interpretation of the song which is amazing, and if you do an exact copy of another singers interpretation, I can’t see how that’s “brave” … especially not when you’re a rock singer and you do a copy of another rock singers interpretation … that’s not brave or original - that’s safe and unoriginal.
The thing is, from the judges comments, I don’t think they know the interpretation David copied, but the voters should know that they’re actually not voting for David Cook … they’re voting for Chris Cornell …

Welcome to the Site MRK!
The David Cook - Chris Cornell is definitely sparked a controversy.
However in the video, Ryan Seacrest does announce that it is a Chris Cornell version when he introduces David Cook.
It was the Judges that dropped the ball and went goo goo over the version.
It was entertaining however and a welcome break from the Bad Ballads and shrieking singing of some of the contestants.
One thing is for sure Chris Cornell has gone from obscurity in the eyes of many fans into a new Google Search Term because of informed Idol watchers such as yourself. Great Post MRK!!

I totally agree with you “American Idol Fan”, it’s the judges reactions that are out of place.
Nothing wrong with David C. doing Cornell’s interpretation - that’s just cool - but he shouldn’t get credit for the originality and boldness of the interpretation - on the contrary it was a VERY safe choice.
I also think it’s super cool that some attention has been drawn to Chris Cornell.
I used to hear Soundgarden, and was a big fan, but that’s like 12 years ago, so personally I’m all of a sudden a HUGE Cornell fan again, and just bought his most recent solo album yesterday … so actually I should say: Thank you AI-judges!
