The American Idol Song Choice Facts
One on the main criticisms from the American Idol Judges ( Randy, Simon, and Paula) is that the Idol contestant picked the wrong song. You hear it almost every week and in every season. What most people don’t know is that there are a limited number of songs to chose from based upon usage rights approved and paid for by the Idol Show and producers.
Recent booted - voted off contestant Jason Yeager has the following to say about the Song Choice Selection process.
“First of all, you’ve got themes, so you’re restrained to a decade. Then you’re
listening to all these different songs. The producers have lists of songs that are cleared for television, so you can pick off that list — but what are the odds that any of those songs are really going to be you? There’s not a whole heck of a lot of time given to do really good research and to listen and try to find a killer song for yourself. And sometimes you’re back to the drawing board if the song isn’t approved. There’s so much more that goes into it that people don’t see. Some artists are completely off-limits that I really enjoy and would really showcase me. You have a couple of hands tied behind your back.
Two weeks ago Voted Off Garrett Haley ran into somewhat of the same wall. In an MTV exit interview Garret was asked about his song choice:
How did you choose “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” as the song that would
introduce you to America?
A: I didn’t really get to choose it. We’re allowed to choose three songs from a list. Every contestant is for sure to get one of the songs, and I didn’t get to get any of my songs because they gave the songs out to all the contestants before that. So I just ended up with having to choose from the list again. And I didn’t really get to choose, they just threw the song at me and said, “Here, sing this one.” [He laughs.] And I was like, “OK.” It was a total surprise to me, but I took what I got, and I did what I could do with it.
From other sources, it is stated that each week the Idol Contestant receive a List of only about 50 songs in which they can choose from for their performance songs. Remember it all comes down to song choice, but there is a limit and a restriction of what songs are official licensed, approved and have usage rights to air on the American Idol Show.
