American Idol 2-27-07 Top 10 Girls Review

Tonight on American Idol the girls performed their song choices from the limited list of 1970’s collection. Apparently according to the judges the song choices of many of the performers tonight were wrong.

Up first of the American Idol stage was Irish singer Carly Smithson. Prior to all the performances a short video in which producers asked the idols to tell us something that we would be surprised to know about them. Carly Smithson confessed or thought we would be surprised to know she works at an all Irish Pub. On Stage, Carly Hennessy Smithson performed the Heart Song, “Crazy For You“. She did a great job.

Judge Randy Jackson said of Carly’s performance, “ You picked a rocker, Big Vocals, the Middle was rough though, it was alright.” American Idol Judge Paul Abdul said “It’s great to see you healthy, you love Heart, you hit the big notes, you are an amazing singer and did an amazing job.” Simon Cowell added, ” Much better than last week, but not connecting with the right song. You are an incredible singer, but you haven’t picked the song that will put you on top. Once you do you will be the girl to beat“. Carly Smithson did a good job as I stated earlier. She should be safe this week and I grade her performance as an A.

The second performer was Syesha Mercado and we would be surprised to learn Syesha Mercado is an actress and has done commercials. Here other claim to fame is imitating a crying baby, which was dead on, but strangely weird at the same time.

Syesha sang ““Me And Mr. Jones” (changed from Mrs. to Mr.) by Billy Paul. Randy said, “Not a great song choice, you need to pick big songs, the soft notes go nowhere“. Paula stated, ” When you hit the power notes it’s great, I like you choices with the song, and the interpretation“. Simon added, ” It was indulgent, the song was not written for a girl to sing, it was silly and old. I was put off. The song is not designed for your voice, Not a good song choice.”

Syesha Mercado was ok tonight, grading a B-. She should however be safe from being Voted Off American Idol on 2-28-07.

The third performer of the evening was Brooke White. Brooke revealed that she was a beauty school drop-out. She was learning to “Do Hair” and loves to “Do Hair”. Brooke White with guitar in hand sang the Carly Simon Song “You’re so Vain” and even looked toward Simon Cowell during her performance. Randy thought, ” It was a great song choice, Was it about someone over here” (Meaning Simon). Paula stated, ” perfect song choice, suits you, everyone was digging it“. Simon added, ” I absolutely Loved it. Perfect song, I felt if the artist chose a song they connected with, they would sign it well” Afterwards Ryan asked Simon ” If he thought the song was about him” Simon Replied, ” I actually did“. Ok Simon, You are so Vain …

Brooke did a great job with her song choice, stage presence and the vocals. The “You ‘re so Vain” innuendo directed toward Simon Cowell Hit home and Hit it out of the ballpark with Simon and the judges. Grade A+

The fourth one up was Ramiele Malubay. Her surprising information was that she does Hula Dancing. Ramiele Malubay sang “Don’t Leave Me This Way” by Thelma Houston.

Randy though, “It was rough for me, Ok for me vocally, wrong song choice, really just OK.” Paula added, “ truly amazing Vocals, power through the song, but you didn’t get to perform your magic but you do have it.” Simon said, “I agree, I hear the song to many times at weddings. Last week you stood out, I won’t remember this performance, You are in the Top 3 best, Just not on this one“.

Kristy Lee Cook was the 5th to take stage after revealing she was a “Tom Boy” at heart. She loved sports and horseback riding. Kristy Lee Cook sang “You’re No Good” by Linda Ronstadt.

Randy said, “ 100% improvement from last week, but no break out moment – I liked it“. Paula added, “Good Song Choice“. Simon stated, “Improvement, but I don’t know how to label you. If you take the Country Route you can make a statement. You have potential.”
Kristy was ok. I am a Fan. She has the stage presence, but just ok vocals. I have to agree with Randy and Simon that she need to pick something and blow it away. In the auditions her version of “Amazing Grace” was incredible, but we haven’t seen a “break Out” from Kristy Lee Cook yet either.

Up 6th was Rocker, Biker Nurse Amanda Overmyer. Her Outfit was umm, just umm. Her hairdo reminded me at first of Cruella Deville from 101 Dalmatians, or something that walked off the set of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In her pre performance video, Amanda Overmyer said she was a book worm, and she believes that knowledge is power.

Amanda Overmyer sang “Carry On My Wayward Son” by Kansas, or should I say struggles through.

Randy said, “Not right song choice. To many breaks in song, too much melody, very pitchy. Bad song for judging singing. Keep it Bluesy and Rock” Paula added, “You got some moves, do what fits right and feels right for you. It was not the right song. American Idol Judge Simon Cowell added, “Nothing felt natural or real, I couldn’t wait for the song to finish.” Got to love Amanda for her personality and style, but her days on Idol could be numbered.

We learn for Alaina Whitaker that her food can not touch. Sounds just like my 8 year old son and that is very annoying. Alaina Whitaker sang “Hopelessly Devoted To You” by Olivia Newton-John.

Randy said, “I like that song, but not a good song choice for you. the song is restrained, not my favorite for you.” Paula said, “You did a real good job“. While Simon quipped, ” I like you, but it’s like your grandma prepared you for Idol. It’s all old fashioned. you need to make yourself current/ You are one of the dark horses in this competition. You have to make yourself relevant.”

In the 8th spot Alexandrea Lushington informs us that she was the poster child for the Atlanta Fire Department when she was young. Also that see sang the National Anthem at ground zero after 9/11.

Alexandrea Lushington sang “If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago.

American Idol Judge Randy Jackson said, ” it was a So Safe Song, it was boring. A Boring song choice.” Paula Abdul added, ” You made it your won, You are Relevant”

Judge Simon Cowell stated, ” You are struggling, in tune – out of tune it just wasn’t you. It was boring. ”

The 9th on stage for American Idol on 2-27-08 was Kady Malloy. Kady revealed that she sings Opera.

Kady Malloy sang “Magic Man” by Heart

Randy thought, “interesting song choice, Never found your pitch, the notes didn’t work”
Paula said, “the low notes were off, when you powered you hit it”

American Idol Judge Simon Cowell added, ” You work on the tape, you are working hard, but you have to find the right song. Let yourself go”

The Last singer of the American Idol Top 10 Girls for 2-27-08 was Asiah Epperson. Asia’h revealed that she was a cheerleader.

Asia’h Epperson sang All By Myself made famous by Celine Dion. Randy said” Good job with a hard song.” Paula said,”it was great, had a problem in the low notes, but the ending brought it home” Simon Cowell added, “it’s a Diva Song, you have to be a heck of s singer to pull it off. You didn’t. Song was too big for you, it was a silly decision.

The voted are in for the American Idol Boys, and being tabulated for the American Idol girls. Tune in tomorrow night February 28, 2008 2-28-08 to find out which 2 girls and 2 boys are Voted Off American Idol.
