American Idol by the numbers, Nielsen that is

This week was the first full week of American Idol Season 7.  We were shown auditions from both Philadelphia and Dallas. We saw some talent, some whack jobs, some heart breaking moments, and the new improved Simon 2.0 the soft or lite version.

But for Idol the most important part is the viewership numbers, or Nielsen ratings.  So how did American Idol do?

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

All eyes were again on American Idol and FOX easily won the night both in viewers and the 18-49 demographic.  But make no mistake, the show has definitely hit peak ratings and it’s on the long slide downward.  FOX’s job will be to make the curve down the least steep it possibly can.  While last night’s edition of AI scored 30.28 million viewers and a 12.6/30 in the 18-49 demographic, it’s off quite a bit from the same (2nd) episode of last year’s season when the Wednesday January 17, 2007 installment of idol had 36.94 million viewers and a 15.5/36 in the 18-49 demographic.  Down 19% in the demo and 6.66 million viewers (we don’t make the numbers up, we only report them).

Nonetheless, when it came to watching TV last night American Idol was king.

As expected, FOX’s season premiere of American Idol led the night with NFL playoff style numbers. The two hour premiere averaged 33.24 million viewers and a healthy 13.8/32 in the 18-49 demographic in the overnights (as always, subject to change).

Worth noting is that for all the talk of “strike effect” benefit for Idol, it actually had 4 million less viewers than last year’s season premiere and slipped 13% in the 18-49. The strike doesn’t appear to to be driving viewers to the show, and on top of it AI seems to have reached its peak ratings and is now on the long slide downward.

Still, FOX wound up averaging more viewers than all the other networks combined.

No too shabby, nothing to complain about.
