American Idol Auditions come to Irving Texas Plus tips
The American Idol folks return to North Texas this weekend to conduct auditions for the hit show’s seventh season. Here is where they found original winner Kelly Clarkson.
Thousands of wannabes will flock to Texas Stadium on Monday to demonstrate varying degrees of talent to Idol producers (Paula, Randy and Simon won’t be there for this round). Expect sleepless nights, lots of singing and mass hysteria.
What’s that? You’ll be one of the hopefuls?
Well, you might need some information first, including how to get the required wristband, tips from a senior producer on how the audition works, and what you should and shouldn’t bring.
Getting your wristband
You can pick up an audition wristband and seat ticket anytime from 8 a.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Monday (when actual auditions start). Don’t bother to go, though, if you’re under age 16, over 28, bound to a music contract or just kind of boring.
For those who do go, the earlier, the better. And who wouldn’t want to be there at 5 a.m. Saturday (when the gates open) with the rest of the screaming masses?
If you want a friend or family member to be with you during the audition (only one allowed), he or she must show up to get a wristband, too. Another important note: No camping will be allowed at the stadium the night before. If you have a wristband, you cannot enter the gate before 5 a.m. Monday.
Once you get your magical wristband, don’t remove it, or you’ll have to get back in line. Other ways to shatter your dreams prematurely include forgetting two forms of ID, bringing more than one person with you for moral support and showing up too late on Monday to get a wristband by 8 a.m. Even with the security of a wristband, nobody is guaranteed a chance to audition because of time constraints.
Tips from the producer
If there’s one person American Idol wannabes should listen to regarding auditioning, it’s Patrick Lynn, the show’s senior producer, who oversees the entire process.

How much time will each contestant get for the actual audition?
“We try to give people about 30 seconds, in truth,” Mr. Lynn says by phone on Wednesday. “But sometimes we’ll know somebody’s moving on after only 10. Other times, it takes a little longer, and we’ll need to see more.”
Even though every person who registers won’t be guaranteed an audition, he said producers usually are able to accommodate everyone: “Hey, we’ve got this down to a science.”
What’s the biggest mistake a hopeful can make in the first round?
“Being too nervous,” he says. “I saw a guy in San Diego who had a great voice, but he was just too nervous for me to give him the go-ahead. You’ve got to forget all the madness around you and just worry about yourself and your songs.”
Songs? As in plural?
“Yeah, everybody should have at least two songs prepared, with verse and chorus. This is a singing competition, after all. If we want to see more, you need to be prepared,” Mr. Lynn says.
“I swear, sometimes we ask for a second song and people look at us like we’re high.”
Finally, what prompted American Idol folks to come to Dallas to look for possible seventh-season superstars?
“Two words: Kelly Clarkson.”
A few things to bring or leave home
Bring water, snacks, a cellphone, a digital camera, sunscreen, and printed and signed release forms from the American Idol Web site. A few things to leave at home: air mattresses, animals, alcoholic beverages, any kind of chairs, tents, video cameras, weapons and delusions of grandeur.
