Bucky Covington performed at the Lycoming County Fair in Pennsylvania to the enjoyment of many fans.
The American Idol fifth season eighth-place finalist is making quite a name for himself. Early last week his first single, “A Different World,” from his self-titled album, broke into the top 10 on country music radio stations.
Covington comes out of what may be one of the most successful groups of post-American Idol contestants. Fifth season winner Taylor Hicks is headlining his own major tour while the season’s fifth-place finisher, Chris Daughtry, is steadily climbing the rock charts.
Several hundred fans gathered on the race track and in the grandstands in front of Clyde E. Kiess Memorial Stage, buzzing with anticipation for the country music star.
Some fans, however, got to see Covington long before he hit the stage.
Covington does a meet-and-greet before each of his shows, giving him a chance to sign autographs and build a relationship with his fanbase.
However, the upclose and personal aspect doesn’t stop there. During his encore performance, Covington invited — initially —two young girls from the crowd to join him on stage. During a later song he invited a larger group of young fans up.
“I couldn’t believe it,” 11-year-old Megan Wheeland, of Cogan Station, said. “It was amazing.”
Wheeland and her friend, 9-year-old Amber Voiytew, of Montoursville, held up a lettered cards that read “Bucky” throughout the concert. The youngsters didn’t see season five of American Idol and are only fans of Covington for his music, not because of his time on TV.
After the performance, the girls confessed that they are now big Covington fans.
It is, perhaps, a testament to his legitimate talent. Something that has proven tough for even the winners of American idol. Despite the success of Kelly Clarkson — winner of the first season of American Idol — many of the artists to emerge from the show have had trouble developing a career in music, let alone shedding the stigma of being an Idol contestant.
Covington’s sound is a unique version of country. Those who enjoy Garth Brooks or Shania Twain could very well also enjoy Covington.
He offers a familiar country feel while veering away from the pop style that many country artists are trying to move toward.
Those who may be hesitant to dive into a country concert needn’t worry either. From Elvis Presley to Poison, Covington tosses enough covers into the mix to keep those unfamiliar with his music into the show.
