Life for Sanjaya Malakar, the American Idol who was voted off the show on 4-18-07 has changed. “I’m definitely ready to hire a bodyguard,” he says. “I’m actually looking into that right now.”

But his new fame has yet to hit him, he says, partly because Idol contestants are kept so isolated. “I got inklings every once in awhile of something different going on that I guess was a cultural phenomenon, but I don’t think it really has hit me yet how big it is.”

Sanjaya says he made it far in the competition based on his ability, not any subversive campaign. “I don’t think that Vote for the Worst or Howard Stern really had enough people voting enough times to make a dent in anything. I think that the reason why I’m here is solely because of my support from my fans.”

As for the future, Sanjaya says he is open to offers in various areas of the entertainment world, including modelling and acting.

“This is what I want to do for the rest of my life and this was my way of learning it in a very quick time, and I got a lot farther than I expected to, and I’m happy with every moment of it.”
