The Idol Simon Cowell Va Tech Controversy can come to a close. Simon is clearly not bashing comments made about Va Tech during the performance on 4-17-07. He is clearly looking away and talking to Paula.

Meanwhile, Chesapeake’s Chris Richardson made it into the top four (instead of the bottom three, like last week) and endured being in the center of a Simon Cowell-fueled controversy that erupted earlier this week.

Richardson sent out his “heart and prayers” to Virginia Tech on Tuesday immediately after a series of negative comments from the judges about his performance of Rascal Flatts’ “Mayberry.“

At the time, it appeared that Cowell, the show’s most acerbic judge, rolled his eyes after Richardson’s statement. Tonight, the Fox series spent its opening moments giving Cowell a chance to explain himself.

“I didn’t hear what Chris was saying. I may not be the nicest person in the world, but I would never ever, ever, disrespect those families or those victims. And I felt it was important to set the record straight.”

The show then played back footage from Tuesday, splitting the screen between Richardson, making the comment that the TV audience saw, and Cowell, shown continuing to talk to fellow judge Paula Abdul and ignoring whatever Richardson was saying.
