American Idol Bids Adieu to Gina Glocksen. This was Gina’s 2nd attempt on Idol, whereas last year she was dumped in the Hollywood Rounds.
As American Idol continues to dominate the ratings in its sixth season, the final nine Idol hopefuls have been trimmed down to eight. Last night’s elimination show saw Gina Glocksen, who has certainly had her ups and downs this season, dumped from American Idol after Phil Stacey and Haley Scarnato were both tossed back into the bottom three this week.
Gina Glocksen, the 22-year-old native of Naperville, Illinois, couldn’t hold her spot on American Idol following Tuesday’s performances of classic crooner Tony Bennett’s hit songs. Gina Glocksen chose to deliver a rendition of “Smile” on Tuesday, though it apparently was not enough to impress the voting public. It didn’t matter that judge Randy Jackson had said Gina’s delivery of the Tony Bennett classic on Tuesday was a “nice, controlled performance”, as viewers sided with Simon Cowell, who has griped in the past that Gina Glocksen was not in the same league as the other eight American Idol finalists.
Wednesday night’s results show proved that as the number of competitors narrows, fans increase their level of passion for American Idol. Host Ryan Seacrest announced that more than 33 million votes had been registered by phone and text message, the highest total of votes for the sixth season of American Idol. Along with Gina Glocksen, Haley Scarnato and Phil Stacey were cast down to the bottom three once again. Both Haley Scarnato and Phil Stacey were in the bottom three last week when Chris Sligh met his American Idol end. Just like last week, Phil Stacey was pronounced safe, as both Haley Scarnato and Gina Glocksen were left to fret about their future. As Ryan Seacrest indicated Haley Scarnato was safe, Gina Glocksen was seen tearing up, though she managed to deliver one last performance for the American Idol audience.
Gina Glocksen had been the quintessential rocker on American Idol, immediately distinguishing herself from many of the other contestants with her tongue ring and a strip of flaming red hair. But, as Gina Glocksen took to the stage on Tuesday, it was clear her rocker attitude and singing style were a poor match for the classics by Tony Bennett, and America had seen enough of a contestant that might better have been suited to Rock Star: Supernova. For the results show, Tony Bennett, apparently stricken by the flu, was a no show. In his place, Canadian singer Michael Buble took to the stage for a standout rendition of “Call Me Irresponsible”.
As Ryan Seacrest broke the news that Gina Glocksen was indeed finished on American Idol, the audience was treated to a clip-trip of Glocksen’s time on Idol. Following the video montage, Gina Glocksen could only say, “I’m so comfortable on that stage … I don’t want to go home.” However, after America voted, Glocksen had no choice but to stifle her tears to offer up one last crack at Tony Bennett’s classic, “Smile”. The lyrics fit the moment perfectly, as Gina Glocksen ironically sang the lyrics, “Smile though your heart is aching/ Smile even though it’s breaking.” Glocksen continued her American Idol exit by crooning, “Although a tear may be ever so near/ That’s the time you must keep on trying.” Finally, all nine American Idol hopefuls came together for one big group hug, and with that, Gina Glocksen’s time on American Idol had come to an end.
However, musically-challenged Sanjaya Malakar, a fan favorite of this season of American Idol despite his lack of singing prowess, didn’t even enter into the bottom three. Sanjaya gained screams and cheers when Ryan Seacrest announced he was safe, and now Sanjaya Malakar has only seven more elimination shows to survive if he hopes to become the next American Idol.
