Melinda Doolittle Step up in the American Idol Competition

On 2-28-07 American Idol show Melinda Doolittle delivered such a classy “My Funny Anerican Idol Melinda Doolittle Valentine” that she will land a lucrative contract. Simon Cowell called her rendition the best vocal in the competition so far. He also praised Doolittle as a “fantastic talent” and a good person. Paula Abdul called the performance “out of this world.”

Now let’s say something nice for Paula, who is so often mocked. She makes more sense this season. And she is giving it back to caustic Simon with flair.

The “Idol” women still seem stronger to me than the men. Doolittle announced herself as the main competition to Lakisha Jones. Jones came through with a soulful “Midnight Train to Georgia.” Cowell knocked her clothing, but her voice was rich and powerful.

Who goes home Thursday? I wouldn’t miss Antonella Barba, who buried a Celine Dion song. And I wouldn’t cry if Alaina Alexander is ejected for skewering the Dixie Chicks.

What could help the men is that many of the women seem similar: They’re big voices trying to claim a bit of Whitney Houston’s turf. Now Stephanie Edwards, Jordin Sparks and Sabrina Sloan are all fine singers. But they’re not that special when you hear them back to back. Jones and Doolittle are special.

In that group, Leslie Hunt doesn’t stand out, although her “Feeling Good” was a vast improvement from the week before. Haley Scarnato looks like an also-ran, although she did far better Wednesday. And Gina Glocksen has a big voice, but lacks subtlety and range.

Jones and Doolittle have the voices, subtlety and range. They may not have the Beyonce look, but I’m hoping America wants a terrific singer above all. So far, these two women are the leaders in this competition.
