Lakisha Jones Blows Away American Idol Competition. Her rendition of  “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Goingâ€Â You’re Gonna Love Me on the American Idol 2-21-07 show took the breath away from the audience and judges. Simon Cowell even declared her the next american idol, by commenting the other 23 might as well get the plane tickets back home.
Here is some background on Lakisha Jones
Lakisha Jones‘ first bid at becoming an “American Idol,” in 2003, went bust.
“Back then, it just wasn’t time,” the Flint resident said on the phone Friday. “I think now is my time.”
So far, she’s right. The singer is a favorite heading into next week’s semifinals. She is one of 12 female contestants who will begin the annual plea for viewer votes on Wednesday’s “Idol.”
She calls herself a leader who is determined to capture the “Idol” crown. Approaching “Idol” is like a job interview, she says, “and I want the job.”
On her profile on the “Idol” Web site, Jones lists her 89-year-old grandmother, Ruth Morris, as her “American Idol.” “I was always shy, and she always motivated me and always encouraged me,” she said. Her grandmother accompanied her on her “Idol” audition in New York, along with her mother, aunt and her 3-year-old daughter, Brionne.
While trained in classical and opera music at the University of Michigan-Flint, Jones also is influenced by her church, where she began singing as a child. She cites gospel diva Yolanda Adams as an inspiration.
Jones moved to Houston six years ago to pursue a career in music. When that didn’t pan out, she moved to Fort Meade, Md., last July, when she was working as a bank teller and auditioned for the show. Now, Jones is focused on the prize before her.
While she says she knows what she’s singing Wednesday night, she won’t reveal the song. “You’re just going to have to tune in and watch,” she teased.
With extended family in Louisiana, Houston, Arkansas, New Jersey, Indiana, Minnesota, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Arizona and Nevada, it’s safe to say she’ll have voters all over the country. But she’s most looking forward to making her home state proud. “It feels really good to have Michigan behind me,” she said. “Hopefully, Michigan has an ‘Idol!’”
