Laura Gonzalez, praised for her “powerhouse voice” during the weekend’s Richmond Idol competition, will go to Memphis to audition for producers of the “American Idol” competition.
She’s the 2006 Richmond Idol, winning the most votes among 1,300 ballots cast at Short Pump Town Center.
“I can’t really explain how cool it is. It’s indescribable,” she said. “I’ve been dreaming about this since I can remember.”
Gonzalez, 19, of Mechanicsville, is a recent Atlee High School graduate. The key to success, she said, is, “Think confident. That’s what I always do.
The 10 semifinalists performed on Saturday afternoon, and the results were announced last night on “Fox News at Ten.”
Her winning song, “How Do I Live” by LeAnn Rimes, is “one of my favorites to sing,” she said. “I have sung it at plenty of weddings. I chose it because I was comfortable.”
Gonzalez will be interviewed this morning on two radio shows: “The Wake Up Show with Bill Bevins” on Lite 98 between 8 and 8:30 and “Mornings with Melissa” on Q-94 at 8:30.
As the Richmond winner, she will fly to Memphis with her mother for a three-night stay and an “AI” audition Sept. 3. She also won a $1,000 gift certificate from Short Pump Town Center and a $500 RideFinders gas gift card.
