First, Taylor Hicks became an Idol. Then, he became a sex bomb. Now, he’s a straight-up gangsta.

When the season-five Idol winner returned home to his native Birmingham, Alabama, he got onstage with gangsta rapper Snoop Dogg and duetted on Dogg’s hit “Gin and Juice.” Hicks said he was drawn to rap music because of its lack of pretense.

“I have the greatest respect for Snoop Dogg as an artist, but also as a family man, a businessman and an integral part of pop culture,” Hicks told the Birmingham News. “Rap music has the most advanced lyricism there is. Rap is real; there’s nothing pretentious about it. I’m very excited about appearing with Snoop. I think it’s great.”

Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, was performing at Birmingham’s City Stages festival on Saturday when Hicks popped in for a surprise guest appearance. Hicks got up on the stage and turned on the “Juice” with his harmonica playing, all the while entrancing revelers with his stylings of dance.

Last week, Hicks was voted the “Hottest Bachelor” in a People magazine poll. The sudden singing sensation came out ahead of such single hunks as nutty hard body Matthew McConaughey, brooding thespian Jake Gyllenhaal, and fellow crooner Nick Lachey.

Hicks has a busy summer lined up, with a single release, a Ford ad campaign, and an eventual album release. He returned home for the weekend to collect his thoughts after the whirlwind trip from obscurity to Idol. He told the News he just wanted to hang out and eat some barbecue.

“I really can’t get out much these days,” Hicks said. “This is the starting point for my getting back into reality, back into society, back in my hometown.
