Los Angeles native Katharine McPhee lost her bid to become the new American Idol Wednesday night when Tayor Hicks was named the winner of the voting in the Fox TV series’ finale at Kodak Theater here.
McPhee, 22, was the first American Idol contestant from South California to be one of the two final contestants in the singing competition series’ five-season history.
“I feel like an winner even though I didn’t get the American Idol title,” McPhee told local Fox11 channel. “The only kind of sadness that comes up is just that bittersweet kind of feel when you graduate from high school.”
Hicks, a gray-haired 29-year-old from Birmingham, Alabama, will receive recording and management contracts.
Hicks said he almost fell to the stage after he was announced as the winner and kept telling himself to “hold your knees up.”
“I’m just completely ecstatic, this is a dream come true,” he said.
McPhee will go on tour this summer with this season’s 10 finalists and receive a 10,000-dollar contract from KFC to write and star in commercials for the fast-food chain. The deal also includes a year’s supply of KFC food.
More than 63 million votes were cast to determine the winner, and some 580 million votes were cast this season, according to a Fox Broadcasting representative.
On Wednesday night’s finale, McPhee sang “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” with Meat Loaf, while Hicks was joined by Toni Braxton on “In the Ghetto.”
The finale also included a surprise appearance by Prince, who sang two songs from his new album “3121″ — “Lolita” and “Satisfied.”
McPhee sang “My Destiny,” “Somewhere over the Rainbow” and “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” on Tuesday night’s final competition show in her bid for votes from the audience, while Hicks performed “Do I Make You Proud,” “Living for the City” and “Levon.”
The American Idol series, launched first in 2002 by Fox, has been attracting more viewers than such hit shows like NBA Playoffs, Super Bowl football game, Grammy and Academy Awards, and the Olympics.
The show’s success also inspired television stations in other nations to produce their own variations.
