Medford music man Paul Geary, manager of the rock band Fuel, says “American Idol” reject Chris Daughtry should think twice before taking ex-Matchbox 20 main man Rob Thomas’ advice about a solo career.
    Daughtry, as you know, is the 26-year-old rockin’ Idol-wannabe who was inexplicably flushed by Taylor Hicks-besotted voters a few weeks back in a stunning “Idol” upset. No sooner had he left the stage than the band Fuel was on the line offering Chris the chance to replace departed lead singer Brett Scallions. (The band was enamored with Daughtry’s rendition of its hit “Hemorrhage.”)
    But Daughtry has been playing hard to get, saying he’d like to launch a solo career. He told MIX 98.5’s John Lander that Thomas told him that was the way to go. Even, presumably, if Chris doesn’t wanna be Lonely No More!
    “Rob was really cool. I wasn’t expecting him to call,” Daughtry told Lander. “He basically said (of the Fuel offer) ‘Hey, don’t do it. You’re better off doing your own thing.’ So I’m talking to all these great people and taking in all their advice.”
    Well, here’s a bit of advice from Geary, who was a drummer for a hit band, Extreme, and manages a few of them now, including Godsmack, whose latest album debuted at No. 1 on the rock charts.
    “Rob’s wrong, (and) here’s why:” Geary said. “Chris tells us he wants to put out a rock record, not a pop record. Rock radio in the U.S. will not be receptive to a solo record from Chris Daughtry of ‘American Idol,’ period. ‘American Idol’ equals pop radio! If Daughtry was aspiring to be a pop star, Rob would be right because Top 40 radio cares about ‘American Idol.’
    “Fuel is credible at the rock formats and that would be his door into that world. When’s the last time you heard Rob Thomas on WAAF?”
