Another one bit the dust on “American Idol” last night following Tuesday’s all-Queen
show. It wasn’t Elliott Yamin. Bucky Covington from Rockingham, N.C., was the latest contestant to be eliminated.
But the Richmond hopeful had another close call.
Like last week, Elliot Yamin was among the bottom three vote-getters. In addition to Covington, he was joined by Ace Young. To add to their obvious anxiety, all had to perform their Tuesday night song while wait- ing to hear their fate.
“America is a little confused. They must be confused because this boy can sing,” said Randy Jackson, one of the show’s three judges, about Yamin.
Judging by the applause, last night’s studio audience agreed. So, apparently, did enough of the viewers voting Tuesday night.
Former Virginian Chris Daughtry was declared safe early in the results show.
Last night’s “American Idol” also answered the question, how do you turn a half-hour results show into an hour-long program? By offering taped messages from contestants’ family members and friends, including Yamin’s mother, Claudette Yamin, also of Richmond
“I wish you well tonight. We’re all praying for you. I’m very proud of you and I love you. Give’em hell, son” was the message that had Yamin tearful in front of the “AI” cameras.
“We like Claudette,” the show’s host, Ryan Seacrest, told Yamin. “Your mom’s cool.”
Next week’s performance show, starting Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Fox, will feature Rod Stewart as the guest mentor for the remaining seven contestants. Song selections will come from his recent standards albums.
