American Idol 3-28-06 Recap

Tuesday night, the Idols returned from the ’50s to perform songs of the 21st American Idol Recap 3-28-06Century. But trying to top what Mr. Manilow did for them last week was tough, actually it was impossible. While they sang their hearts out, they clearly didn’t have the benefit of one of the masters of music this week. Song choices were bizarre in some cases and the confidence the contestants had last week was just missing. I’m calling for the return of Barry!

Here’s what the judges and I thought:

Lisa Tucker, 16, Anaheim, CA:
Song: “Because of you”

Randy: OK job on a song by former “Idol” winner (Kelly Clarkson). It was just alright.

Paula: Tough song choice – you’ve really needed to put a twist on it since it’s a song that’s popular right now.

Simon: The song was too big for your voice. It didn’t work.

Me: Whoever allowed her to choose a song that’s on the radio right now by the best of the former “Idol” winners is nuts. Lisa has been in the bottom three the past two weeks and she did herself no favors Tuesday night to stop herself from taking another shot at going home. She hit quite a few clunkers in a song that was clearly too mature for her voice.

Score: 5 out of 10

Kellie Pickler, 19, Albemarle, NC:
Song: “Suds in the Bucket”

Randy: That song wasn’t exciting enough for your voice.

Paula: You’re way better than that song.

Simon: There are thousands of songs to choose from and you sang about soap in a bucket? It was a gimmicky rodeo song.

Me: The song was too slow and unchallenging and frankly I was bored. I like Kellie and I think she has a good voice, but she’s played the innocent country girl for about all it’s worth. She’s gonna have to start singing now.

Score: 6

Ace Young, 25, Denver, CO.:
Song: “Drops of Jupiter”

Randy: Completely the wrong song choice for you and you didn’t sing it well.

Paula: Refreshing after the previous 2 performances. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was still good.

Simon: That wasn’t a great vocal – it was quite karaoke, actually.

Me: Wow. I was surprised by the judges’ comments as this was my favorite performance from Ace thus far. I think the song suited him and he sang it well.

Score: 8

Taylor Hicks, 29, Birmingham, AL:
Song: “Trouble”

Randy: It wasn’t a great song. It didn’t let you show off your vocals.

Paula: It was nice to see you just sing a song. You’re only 28 or 29 years old, but you’re an old soul.

Simon: I quite liked the song and I thought it was an excellent vocal.

Me: Taylor has a wonderful, soulful voice and he is different – he stand out from the others. His uniqueness will carry him deep into this competition.

Score: 9

Mandisa, 29, Antioch, TN:
Song: “Wanna Praise You”

Randy: You can definitely sing – but the song choices tonight, I just don’t get it.

Paula: There’s a new religion – 40 million people have joined the church of Mandisa.

Simon: I thought it was a bit indulgent. I didn’t get that – it was not for me.

Me: Yikes! I know I’m going to get blasted for this but – sheeeshhh! Where’s the mute button when you need it! Paula may think 40 million people joined the church of Mandisa, but she can minus at least one from that group – me. The vocal was poor in the beginning – almost breathless – and then the screeching started.

Score: 5

Chris Daughtry, 26, McLeansville, NC:
Song: “What If”

Randy: You were sharp most of that song.

Paula: What if, what if, what if – it was like studdering, but you know I’m one of your biggest fans.

Simon: That was indulgent. There’s a line that you don’t cross – Creed is not “American Idol.” You have to show another side.

Me: Really, really powerful vocal. I don’t particularly care for that song or that type of music, but I don’t think Chris needs to change things, as Simon said. He’s a rocker, just like he was last week and just like he was when he auditioned and made the show. I don’t know of a rocker on the radio today who’s planning on changing their style and I don’t think Chris needs to, either.

Score 8.

Katharine McPhee, 21, Los Angeles, CA:
Song: “The Voice Within”

Randy: Good song choice, but you didn’t bring anything new to it.

Paula: You were your best tonight.

Simon: Best of the night and it was almost – almost – as good as Christina (Aguillera).

Me: Only Katharine could pull off that very difficult song. She has a strong, beautiful, controlled voice and she was, as Simon said, the best of the night.

Score: 9 1/2

Bucky Covington, 28, Rockingham, NC:
Song: “Real Good Man”

Randy: Right song for you – I liked it.

Paula: It was familiar for you, but be careful of your diction

Simon: It was very unimpressive. If this was a paid concert, this is the point when I leave.

Me: Bucky is in a little over his head, I think. He lacks any stage presence, but he’s such a likable guy. The song was, in fact, just OK.

Score: 6

Paris Bennett, 17, Fayetteville, GA:
Song: “Work It Out”

Randy: That was fearless, it was da bomb. Best performance of the night.

Paula: That was awesome.

Simon: It was precocious – it was like a little girl pretending to be Beyonce.

Me: I have to go with Simon on this one. Paris can sing, but there’s something so little girl about her in her interviews and something so grown up in her singing and dancing and it’s really not meshing for me.

Score: 7

Elliot Yamin, 27, Richmond, VA.:
Song: “I don’t Wanna Be”

Randy: American – this boy can sing. We’ve got a hawt one.

Paula: I loved the arrangement – you are one funky white boy.

Simon: Great song, terrible arrangement, good vocal, hideous dancing.

Me: Elliot is a good singer, but he is going to have to get over the nerves and become a better performer if he has plans to win this competiton. It was an interesting arrangement, an attempt to be different from the original I suppose, but it only worked in so much as Elliot has great vocal range. I wouldn’t have chosen that particular song for him.

Score: 8

High point of the night: Once again, Katharine’s voice was outstanding.

Low point of the night, otherwise known as “toodles”: “Pitchy” crept into Lisa’s song way too often. In a couple years, she may be ready, but for right now, it’s her time to go.
