American Idol: Judging the results 3-15-06

The judges on American Idol might have the cushy seats, but they certainly didn’t know what they were hearing last night. After watching the performances last night, I had wondered if it was just me who thought the judges, particularly Simon Cowell, were overly giving with their praise. Apparently I was not the only one! While Simon may have thought Melissa McGhee’s performance was her best ever, it wasn’t enough to save her from the unforgiving American public.

Ryan Seacrest happily announced that they had received 32.5 million votes. Up next was the highly anticipated Ford commercial. Yes, I anticipate these things. I missed their dorky commercials. This one featured the Top 12 singing “All I Want” while camping. I particularly loved Ace Young as big foot.

Up next was a performance by Stevie Wonder, since last night was all about him. First Ryan asked Stevie what he thought when he first met the performers. Stevie said that he just wanted to hear them, then give them some constructive criticism. He sang “My Love is on Fire.” At least someone sang a Stevie song well this week.

First to go into the bottom three was Ace Young, giving me a heart attack. I know that Ms. Toad loves that we don’t go on about how cute people are, but I really want to just look at him for a couple more weeks! I don’t expect him to win, but come on, we’ve got to have a little eye candy don’t we? Kevin Covais was safe, way to go vote for the worst people! Paula Abdul didn’t understand it, while Randy Jackson was shocked. Simon said the public preferred other people. Next to go into the bottom three was Melissa McGhee. Finally it was down to either Bucky Covington or Lisa Tucker headed for the bottom three. I was a little shocked that it was Lisa and not Bucky, but I’ve got a theory on that one. Perhaps Paris and Lisa are splitting the same voting demographic, as they both are young and have the same style.

First person to be safe was Ace, thankfully. Then in a very quick announcement, Lisa was safe and Melissa was going home. There wasn’t really any long tearful goodbye as the show was running short on time. Melissa’s end song got cut off, thankfully, because she was singing worse than yesterday.

Honestly I’m not overly surprised by the results. I’m happy that our opinion of “Melissa sucked” was validated by voting her off. It makes me feel less weird for not liking her performance last night. I was a little shocked to see Lisa in the bottom, but clearly Paris is connecting more than she is. I don’t think we’ll see Kevin off for a good long time, AI needs one bad performer in the top 5 or so.
