American Idol: Who will get voted off? It won’t be Chris Daughtry — probably Bucky CovingtonAmerican Idol 3-14-06 show

The real competition — the final 12 — started tonight and you could tell there were a lot of nerves. It was great to see the emotions evoked within the singers when Stevie Wonder joined their practice session. It’s too bad more of them couldn’t harness that emotion and turn it into memorable performances. And, by the way, some of the “makeovers” worked and some, well, let’s just say … Chickens shouldn’t wear lipstick.

Here are some of the best performances:
Chris Daughtry, at right, singing “Higher Ground,” gave the best performance. One question, Why does he get smoke effects and strobe lights and everyone else gets squat? (No makeover for Chris. Funny line from Randy Jackson — “You know what’s cool about you?” he asked Chris. Then Randy says out loud: “You’re probably saying, ‘Everything.’” And, for once, Randy was right.)

Paris Bennett, Katharine McPhee, Taylor Hicks, Mandisa and Lisa Tucker were the other standouts.

Elliott Yamin, Ace Young, Melissa McGhee and Bucky Covington were better than the worst.

Kellie Pickler and Kevin Covais were out of their league.

Paris sang “All I Do” and got a bit carried away with the vocal gymnastics, but still, she had some great presence. Did anyone notice how irritated Simon looked as Paris kept singing her answers to Ryan Seacrest’s questions? (It was pretty irritating.)

Katharine gave an effortless rendition of “Until You Come Back to Me.” Her song choice was good, but her clothes choice, again, was not. Was that a muumuu she had on? I wonder if anyone tells her that that’s not the way to dispel rumors of pregnancy. Hmmmmm….

Taylor sang “Living for the City.” It’s too bad they don’t let him break out his harmonica. Now that would be cool. He definitely is the most comfortable on stage and aside from Chris, Taylor’s the only other one who gives us an event to talk about. Funny line from Simon: Taylor is like the drunk dad singing at a wedding — the only difference is that he CAN sing. And now he has a nice haircut.

Lisa sang “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” Lisa, Lisa, Lisa — young girl  who keeps trying to be old. Waaaaay too much makeup. The blush, the eye shadow … and the lipstick was too bright for her skin tone, if I do say so myself. Anyway, back to the music: Great vocals as usual, but the performance was just OK — kind of like her idol, Whitney Houston.

Mandisa really knows who she is and is always well put together. She sang “Don’t Worry About a Thing” and she didn’t. Smooth but explosive vocal performance, and she has fun. I loved that she got rid of the heels and went barefoot.

Elliott: Smooth, maybe too smooth.
Ace: Karaoke star. Same old Ace.
Melissa: Hope my “recognition” misses??? Anyway, her makeover was the best, hands down.
Bucky: Not bad, but probably not enough. Looks like he discovered hair conditioner.
Kellie: Terrible, but will probably power through. Was she going to a prom? What tha …!?
Kevin: Ugh… the teenie-boppers and gray-hairs will vote him through. Did I mention lipstick?

Did I mention Paula? Well, I will when she says something worth repeating.

Tell me what you think? Who should go?
