It’s week three of head-to-head competition on Fox TV’s star search “American Idol,” and Wrentham’s Ayla Brown is still among the contestants.

Ayla Brown

Brown, 17, will compete again tonight against the seven other remaining female vocalists. The show airs on Fox at 8 p.m.

Last Thursday, the group of “Idol” hopefuls was narrowed down from 20 to 16 — eight female vocalists and eight male vocalists. The remaining male vocalists will compete tomorrow night, also at 8 p.m.

Brown, the daughter of state Sen. Scott Brown, R-Wrentham, and WCVB-TV news reporter Gail Huff, last week got mostly glowing reviews from “Idol’s” celebrity judges — Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson — following her Tuesday night performance. She sang “I Want You To Need Me,” by Celine Dion, who Brown indicated in her “Idol” profile is one of her favorite artists.

Abdul told Brown her performance last week was a pleasant surprise, noting that it was even better than the first week’s performance when Brown sang Christina Aguilera’s “Reflections.”

“It’s great to see how you’re growing,” Abdul said.

Jackson agreed with Abdul, while “Idol’s” famously critical judge, Cowell, assessed Brown’s performance as “good” but still “a little bit mechanical.”

Early on in the competition, the judges often made off-hand comments that things appeared to come easily to Brown. Since then they have recognized Brown as someone who works hard for her successes, leading Cowell last week to tell the teen, “I think you are working probably harder than anyone that I’ve seen on the show so far.”

In a previous interview, Brown said one of her biggest obstacles has been getting around the perception that she has had things handed to her.

“That is false,” she said, and noted that she puts her all into everything she does.

Last week she dispelled the perception, too, that she has always been an “A” student at school after Cowell commented “you strike me as the type of girl who probably got all A’s.”
“I started out school getting almost all C’s,” Brown told the judges, while her mom was seen in the audience emphatically nodding her head in agreement.

Brown has already completed all of her academic requirements for graduation from her school, Noble and Greenough in Dedham.

Tonight and tomorrow night, national audiences will again get a chance to weigh in after the show, deciding through their voting which contestants will move on to the coveted top 12 and which will go home.

Voting takes place for two hours after the show both nights, and viewers can vote as many times as they wish during that period. Instructions are given at the end of the show, or can be found online at www.idolonfox.com.

Results of this week’s voting will be aired on Thursday night at 8 p.m. Four contestants — two females and two males — will be eliminated.
