The ”American Idol” second semifinal round has been more like war-field strewn with fallen hopefuls. Four of those less-likely “Idols†this round were eliminated unemotionally by viewer voting, likely to turn the show’s fifth season finale as happening as that of earlier seasons.
With David Radford, Jose Penala, Heather Cox, and Brenna Gethers out, the show is no longer a run-of-the-mill contest. Viewers could not stomach Brenna’s egoistic demeanor coupled with a lack of style to her music. David’s rendition of ”The Way You Look Tonight” left viewers more upset than happy and possibly lent to the him becoming the male with the lowest votes.
Though the predictability of the voting remained, the show had its share of interesting moments some of which were contributed not by the participants. Judge Paula Abdul’s giggly replies to Ryan Seacrest’s queries seemed a tad out of place. Some contestants did their bit, like Taylor Hicks literally rubbed well with Chris Daughtry after he escaped being voted out. Lisa Tucker’s tear-eyed histrionics, Ayla Brown’s “Overjoyed†appreciation for Jose Penala’s rendition and Paris Bennett’s hug thereafter were no less.
With only 16 contestants left after the four eliminations, the selection of semifinalists is a tad similar to that of the last few seasons. The producers were said to be looking for a rather different personality type this year, someone with loads of attitude and there seemed only one of that kind – Brenna Gethers. Labeled a “villain” from her very first round, she was brash and rather too unafraid of anybody. But with her voted out, one wonders whether the show producers and viewers agree on what is “Idol†material.
Going by past “American Idol†choices - Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino and Carrie Underwood, they were people with charisma rather than just plain attitude and talent. Most viewers agreed they would succeed irrespective of their persona. Kellie Pickler, a favorite since her Greensboro audition has many viewers taken in by her farmgirl story.
But it remains to be seen whom among the semi-finalists make it to the finals and whether any of them have the confidence, talent and versatility to touch the success of Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. Meanwhile, the yesteryear Idol Clarkson notched up Grammy Awards this year in the categories of best female vocal performance for “Since U Been Gone” and best pop vocal album for “Breakawayâ€. For those remaining on the show, she possibly is an inspiration and someone to follow.Â

Paris Bennet is my favorite female performer this year. I definately think she is better than Kelly Clarkson or any other previous Idol. I also like Taylor,Elliot,Kinnik and Katharine. Nice site!

I am rooting for Chris Daughtery and/ or Lisa Tucker. Those two will definetly be names to remeber in the near future.
