Last weekend, American Idol 10 Top 3 finalist Lauren Alaina came back to her hometown to see her family and fans. Since she is from my neighboring hometown, lots of people I knew have been supporting her and were hoping to catch a glimpse last weekend. However, what I am getting from the press is an entirely different story than I am getting from the people who actually went. So read some of these eyewitness accounts and make up your own mind.
It should first be mentioned that for Lauren’s homecoming, they did not give her a break whatsoever. Her day was planned out by Chattanooga and North Georgia officials long before Idol even announced her in the Top 3. Instead of coming home, taking a break, and visiting family, she had to sleep in a hotel instead of at home in her own bed. She was scheduled for interviews with our local FOX news and country station US101, meet-and-greets with 150 fans at the local AT&T store, a concert at Coolidge Park in Chattanooga, a parade in Ft. Oglethorpe, GA, inspirational talks with Ringgold GA tornado victims, and throwing out the first pitch and singing “God Bless America” at the local Chattanooga Lookouts game.
The above photo is what the local press was able to get of Lauren, but the best pictures local fans could get looked something more like this:
Personally, I could not even get into Ft. Oglethorpe on Saturday for the parade and make it out of there in time to get to Atlanta that night; it was pandemonium. It doesn’t seem like I missed much, however. Here’s what a few eyewitnesses had to say:
“It was the worst parade I’ve ever been to…..I thought the star of the parade was suppose to be last? After standing out there for about 3 hours, I finally heard them coming and looked up and Lauren was the first one, there she sat on top of a Mustang, and by the time I got my camera out, she had already gone past me….Good thing it wasn’t the Christmas parade, all the little kids would have missed Santa Claus…just saying!”
“I went to Coolidge Park and it was a waste of time. She only sang 2 songs and you could not even get close.”
The person who took the above photo complained because Lauren only faced one side of the crowd when riding the Mustang in the parade. Who does that?!
So, while we pretty much all still love Lauren around here and are rooting for her to win on American Idol, her homecoming was pretty much a bust, and she will probably have a long row to hoe as a hometown celebrity. She’s so young…hopefully she will be able to take it all in stride. In the meantime, if an Idol comes to visit a hometown near you, it sounds like you’ll be better off catching the cleaned up version of it on television.
