Hey, everyone! It’s been a long hiatus, but it’s great to be back and getting to be a professional smart-alec for you all. I missed you, too!
For Idol Season 10, we have a lot of new stuff happening. The first and most noticeable is the judging lineup. Like most people, I was hesitant about Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez joining the panel, but after watching tonight’s episode, I think they will fit in just fine, and they add a nice element to the show that’s been missing for awhile. Even Randy Jackson seems a bit more knowledgeable without Simon and his gaggle of crazies (Ellen notwithstanding). Steven was wildly entertaining, and J-Lo was sweet and pretty and constructive, so as long as she doesn’t start demonstrating how to sing stuff, I think she will do fine.
How awesome is it that they started out in New Jersey? Gym, tan, laundry, and Idol! Fist pumps and hot messes!
Now, here’s a look at some of tonight’s contestants (read that like that homeless dude with the “golden voice” was saying it):
Rachel Zevita: Pretty voice, a little operatic. She seems like she would do well in theater or somewhere, but I don’t see her getting very far on the Idol stage. According to our American Idol spoiler sources (aka my boss here at Idol Mania), she chooses her music scholarship over a chance at a record contract, a Ford whatever and a gazillion hundred thousand dollars. Normally I’d think that was dumb since you can go to school anytime, but after hearing her sing, I think she probably made the right choice.
Caleb Holly: He had a pretty tenor voice, reminiscent of a lot of the popular pop singers that are hot right now, like the guys from Train and The Script. I hope to see more from him.
Kensey Palmer: Kensey is American Idol’s first ever 15-year-old hopeful, since they apparently lowered the age this year (did they also raise it?). She had a big voice for a little girl, and she got a golden ticket.
Tiffany Rios: Back to the New Jersey world of “GTL”, Tiffany Rios introduced herself to us by showing us how to tease our hair. She was very Snooki-esque and so they were totally setting us up for a stinker what, with her giant silver star pasties and all (pictured above). And her “pick me for higher ratings” gimmicky song wasn’t that good. But then she sang “The Power of Love” by Celine Dion, and her voice was actually very pretty! She got a golden ticket to go with her golden tan. I think we may have another Tatiana del Torro on our hands. Tiffany had a good voice, but I still don’t see her getting that far. Too much Tan, not enough Gym or Laundry.
Robbie Rosen: With Robbie Rosen, we learn that Sob Stories are still very much in full force on this “new and improved” Idol. He was in a wheelchair for most of his childhood, but he’s better now. They didn’t take pictures or video of him in this condition because they were ashamed of him being a gimp, or something like that. As Antoine Dodson would say, “Sounds suspect to me!” But other Idol Mania commentators insist that they had his medical records, so whatevs. I just wanted to hear him sing. Surprisingly, despite looking like the Long Lost Jonas Brother, Rosen was an excellent vocalist and didn’t butcher the Beatles, so I’m willing to lend my ear to him for future episodes.
Chris Cordeiro: Eagle Scout. Texting-while-driving hater. And completely horrendous. Yep, we still get the bad auditions.
Michael Perotto: This guy burps when he’s nervous. And he thinks he has what it takes to become the next American Idol. I mean, I’m not into taking “the next American Idol” too seriously or anything, but geez louise. Give me a break. At least Normund Gentle was entertaining, this guy…when they panned out to show his brother and his parents, I seriously thought that they might just be inbred.
Ashley Sullivan: This girl was a nut. I kind of loved her from the beginning…she was obsessed with Britney Spears and was very animated and a total Chatty Cathy. But then after all her Britney talk she sang “Gimme Gimme” from Thoroughly Modern Millie, when maybe she should have sang “Gimme Gimme More” by the Balded Umbrella Wielder herself. She wasn’t bad, but the judges were hesitant to let her through. After crying and insisting that she wanted to bring more Liza Minelli to pop, they let her through. I would have, too.
Victoria Huggins: OMG, I wanted to kill her. She sounded, acted, and sang pretty much exactly like Miley Cyrus. She might have been a little prettier. But, she was soooooooooo annoying. Steven Tyler made some kind of comment about her legs which I thought was a little Pedo Bear of him, but she was good enough to get through. Now, hopefully she gets cut soon so I never have to see her again.
Melinda Ademi: Now here was a sob story I can get behind. Melinda and her family were war refugees from Kosovo. Her voice was good so hopefully we will see more of her.
Devyn Rush: She was a singing waitress, and basically she had the best voice of the night, if you ask me. I forgot a lot of the details and what she sang just because I was just listening to her instead of making notes. They made fun of her T-shirt and jeans but judges are weird like that. I saw several guys wearing T-shirts and jeans that made it through and they didn’t say a word. I mean, what’s the right thing to wear for something like this? Giant silver star pasties?
Yoji “Pop” Asano: The Pants-on-the-Ground audition of the night, YojiPop was super entertaining. He was from Japan and didn’t seem to speak English very well, but he was obsessed with the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. But he wanted to sing a song he hated, “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus. He sucked royally but he had those MJ moves pretty down.
Brielle von Hugel: Her dad had throat cancer, but he is now cancer-free. She sang “Endless Love” and was pretty okay for a 16-year-old, but she definitely wasn’t as good as some of the other little kids that auditioned. She seems like she might be really good if she came back in a couple of years, though. I don’t know how far she’ll go here but I’m hoping she gets cut early so she can come back once she’s brushed up her skillzz.
Travis Orlando: The last audition of the night, another sob story, but this one actually made me sob, a little. He was from the Bronx and he, his twin brother, and his parents all stayed in a shelter for awhile when his dad was sick. He was super-cute and tried to sing “Eleanor Rigby” but fell short a little. Like Brielle, he had a really great voice, he just needs a little work on pitch and holding notes to be super-good.
Well, that’s pretty much it! Tomorrow we’re headed to New Or-LEANS (or N’awlins, as some of you might say) and I will be taking the reins as your live-blogger! So, grab your bucket of crawfish and I’ll see y’all tomorrow!

You have? Aww! I feel rusty, Eric. I’m kind of worried about live-blogging tomorrow…maybe then my head will be in a better place and I can keep up with all those names…I am a SLOW typist. But anyway, thanks!!

I’m pretty sure I heard Robbie say he was in a wheelchair for a few months, like when he was 5. These Lifetime moment kids need to step it up. Of course, it will be hard to beat the ultimate hard luck contestant, Angela Martin, so they should just stop trying.

why did they show adam lambert in the collection of past idol winners at the start of the show?

Because Adam Lambert was so amazing. He basically won the show.
