American Idol 10: Milwaukee Auditions Live Blog

Happy Wednesday, it’s time for another epic American Idol auditions live blog! Tonight we’re headed to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, home of Miller and Pabst beer. I’m kind of hoping we wind up with a few brewed up contestants! Put your critic face on, it’s time to enjoy the fun and the mayhem together, and feel free to join in on the discussion in the comments section!

And here we go. We begin the show with a horrendous Randy Jackson/Steven Tyler duet. Yikes! Milwaukee is home to Danny Gokey, and I’m really hoping it holds someone a bit more talented than he!

Scotty McCreery is the first contestant of the night. He’s a 16-year-old baseball player with a booming speaking voice. I was thinking he was going to sound like country singer Josh Turner, so how apropos that he is singing a Josh Turner song! It’s very sound-alike, so the judges ask him to sing something else. This evokes some nonsense from Steven Tyler, which I’m taking to be a good thing, because he gets a golden ticket.

Joe Repka is next. He is a future radio DJ, but will he have a golden voice in front of the judges? He definitely has a face for radio, if you know what I’m saying. He’s singing “The Longest Time” by Billy Joel. After hearing his audition, he needs to stick to radio. DJing, that is, not singing!

Emma Henry is a 15-year-old Hayley Williams-type, cute, despite her skunk hair. She sings “True Colors” by Cindy Lauper. She needs some work, but her voice isn’t bad. Steven thinks she has a lot of character. J-Lo thinks she needs work but that there’s something to build on. Still, she says no to Emma’s chance at making it to Hollywood. Steven says yes, but Randy’s still not won over. After some crying and infinitely long pauses, he decides to give her one more shot.

Next we get some baddies, including enchanting goth beauty Juanita Borges. Montage of judges ripping contestants a new one.

Next is a girl whose name I will most certainly misspell, Naima Adedopo. She’s a janitor and looks kind of bohemian, or homeless, or like Bob Marley’s love-child. She has some wicked pit hair. She wows the judges with a Donny Hathaway song and her rich voice.

More baddies, including a guy with a giant toothbrush who stole his outfit from the dudes from Ariel Pink’s Haunted Grafitti.

Jerome Bell is a wedding singer who is hoping to end the baddie spell. He sings some Marvin Gaye. It’s a little shouty, but he has some super-cool silver B-boy shoes. The judges loved his shoutiness, and I loved his hat, so he’d off to Hollywood.

Thanks to Justin Bieber, the age limit is now 15. So for some reason, they sat and listened to an adorable 5-year-old. See ya in 10 years, kid!

Thia Megia is a beautiful 15-year-old girl who is singing the very ambitious “Chasing Pavements” by Adele. I’m not sure about her rendition, but her voice is nice. Steven thought her voice had a lot of mustard, which I’m guessing is good. She’s off to Hollywood. Every 15-year-old after Thia also made it to Hollywood.

Nathaniel Jones is a Civil War reenactor. He seems like my kind of contestant, even though in my neck of the woods those guys wear gray (whoo! The South is gonna rise aga-yun!). Nathaniel would like you to know that his dad is not a hippie! (your guess is as good as mine) He sings the best audition song ever, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. I heart this guy so much. He is my next American Idol. Or, at least until the end of this episode after which I forget about him forever. Steven liked him, calling him outstanding. Still, he’s out of the door and out of our lives, at least until someone posts that audition on YouTube.

Molly DeWolf Swenson seems to have won the lottery of life. She’s a Harvard grad, she’s an intern for the White House, and she’s attractive. We’ll just forget about that part where Randy punched her in the face. She sings some Otis Redding, and she starts low like Tony Braxton and moves up in her range. She seems much wiser than her 22 years. I like her.

Hayley Reinhart is like a ray of sunshine entering the Idol audition room with her curly blond hair and infectious smile. She was rejected last year in Chicago, but she’s back for more. She sings “Oh! Darling” and Randy sees a definite improvement. The golden ticket just seems to match her so well!

Next is Tiwan Strong, and while the spelling of his name bothers me, he has a great voice, finger snapping and all. His voice is different, not too jazzy or R&B. The judges liked it and so did I.

Steve Beghun is a CPA and a funeral and wedding singer (”weddings tend to be more fun”). This guy is hilarious, if a bit oafish. They make it sound like he’s going to be awesomely bad, but he’s awesomely good! Steven thought he was “disturbingly great”. Everyone says yes so I guess you get a break on your audits this year, because this tax accountant is headed to Hollywood!

Vernika Patterson is singing the 2nd most awesome audition song, Minnie Riperton’s “Loving You”. Two guesses on how she did. NO ONE can sing that song. I don’t know what Minnie Riperton was on when she sang that, but that seems like an impossible song. Vernika is defensive, thinking she wasn’t picked because she wasn’t skinny enough. Cue montage of mad rejects!

We’ve had a White House intern, next is a Barack Obama impersonator. Albert Rogers III has a few more tricks up his sleeve than impressions, though. He’s not great, but he’s not bad. Steven thought it was good, but he gets three nos.

Next is Scott Dangerfield, who alleges to kissing a girl backstage, hence his lipstick. He sings Amos Lee, which makes him a winner in my book. (Amos was my first ever telephone interview, which was terrible on my part but he was sooo nice about it! Amos rocks. Incidentally, he has a CD that came out this week. How do I know that? Because I’m a huge music nerd…I mean, because I’m awesome!) He sounds a lot like Amos as well, which I did not expect out of a skinny white guy! Jennifer said he was her favorite she’s seen so far.

Next up is “the most annoying girl in the world”, Megan Frazier. She is an avid Green Bay Packers fan, to the point of psychotic. (Whoo!) She sings “Baby” by Justin Bieber and does kind of a nightmarish operatic baa baa black sheep rendition. See, Justin Bieber’s not that bad!

Steven’s biggest fan and Carly Smithson lookalike, Alyson Jados, is a rocker chick (duh). She sings “Come Together” by the Beatles, conveniently covered by Aerosmith. She’s okay, not great. Steven’s smitten, though, until it’s time for the critique. He said it was very pitchy. J-Lo thinks she has potential, so she says yes. Randy says no. It’s all up to Steven, and while he agrees with Randy, he said yes. I don’t think she’ll make it very far unless there’s a vast improvement.

Ending the night is Chris Medina, who is engaged. His fiancee was in an accident in 2009 and suffered a traumatic brain injury. I hate sob stories, but watching Chris take care of her actually made me cry! He sings “Break Even” by The Script, and he’s not the best singer we’ve ever heard, but he has potential. Sorry, having trouble typing while crying my eyes out. He’s going to Hollywood and is a rumored Top 40 spoiler. Okay, I need a pint of Ben & Jerry’s after watching that.

Tomorrow night we’re in my neck of the woods, Nashville! There’s a ton of talent in Nashville, and I’m going to be on the lookout for my friend Ben, who wore this outfit:

See ya tomorrow night!

Critic face on. Ready for your brilliance.

  • 2 Jebbica // Jan 26, 2011 at 9:08 pm

Brilliance? No pressure though, right? ;) I’m getting weird question marks that are inserting themselves randomly in my sentences, so be warned, I’m not totally unsure of everything I say!

  • 3 Lizaio // Jan 26, 2011 at 9:11 pm

They might come because you’re doing two spaces after the period? Who knows? You’re ALWAYS brilliant.

  • 4 Lizaio // Jan 26, 2011 at 9:17 pm

I hate when they start singing after they’ve been told “no”

  • 5 Jebbica // Jan 26, 2011 at 9:18 pm

But isn’t it grammatically correct to do two spaces? I’m not sure I can get out of the habit, but I’ll try!

  • 6 Cait Hagar // Jan 26, 2011 at 9:18 pm

OMG I saw that Josh Turner kid Scotty McCreery on commercials. I thought he looked like him too. But, maybe I was thinking of the wrong guy.

  • 7 Lizaio // Jan 26, 2011 at 9:26 pm

I’ve been told the two spaces isn’t kosher for web writing, or maybe that’s just in design? Who knows? They’re sort of disappearing as you go, so it’s cool.

  • 8 Jebbica // Jan 26, 2011 at 9:28 pm

I did not know that! I’m old-school. I’m going to have to make myself learn this, or frantically hit back-space!

Don’t hate on the Biebs, Liz! Bieber is love.

Jon Chu, director of such classics as Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D is directing a movie about Justin Bieber that’s coming out on Valentine’s Day. I may be snarky and run a hipstery music blog, but you’re crazy if you don’t think I will be on that ish like donkey kong!

  • 15 Cait Hagar // Jan 26, 2011 at 10:07 pm

    Cool! They were both good!

  • 19 Jebbica // Jan 26, 2011 at 10:14 pm

I’m wondering what will happen to Biebs once he hits 18 or so. Will he fade into obscurity and Celebrity Rehab, or will he be like Justin Timberlake? Say what you want, he’s a good singer. And “Baby” is catchy as hell. I find him much less grating than Gaga, Ke$ha, and Taylor Swift.

  • 20 Jebbica // Jan 26, 2011 at 10:25 pm

  • 23 Jebbica // Jan 26, 2011 at 10:38 pm

Yeah, I remember I liked him even though he didn’t make it, so I posted a video and emailed him about an interview but he never replied. Then I found his blog and discovered he was kind of a giant d-bag. But you know who did reply to me about an interview? Jackie Tohn! I should have a Powerfox/Ponymane interview to post next week, I hope!
