Voted Off Next Great American Band - Dot Dot Dot leaving us with 4 bands left

The Next Great American Band reached there final 4 tonight. With Dot Dot Dot being voted off, the final 4 of the next great American band are:

The Clarke Brothers
Light Of Doom
Sixwire
Denver and the Mile High Orchestra

The show went something like this:

The Clark Brothers: “These are the Days of Our Lives”

The Clark Brothers, thankfully, brought in a drummer and a bassist this week. The sound is definitely fuller and doesn’t take away from the down home feel. This is the first Queen song ever, maybe, with a fiddle solo. The cover isn’t as awe-inspiring as other recent performers, but they rocked out at the end.

Light of Doom - “We Will Rock You”

This was a very silly song for the kids to cover. They didn’t do much with the melody, but they rocked it out best they could. The guitar solo was darn good, but the singing was mediocre. The judges are lukewarm on the performance. On a positive note, there was a reaction shot of the angriest little kid in the world, standing up in the crowd and yelling maniacally at something.

Sixwire - “Fat Bottomed Girls”

Although it was a pretty buy-the-numbers cover, they performed it expertly. Their harmonies are light years better than any other band in the competition, and it was an overall very good performance. The judges all love it.

Denver and the Mile High Orchestra - “Sleeping on the Sidewalk”

Again, Denver performs a wussified version of a rock song. Denver is Denver is Denver. I’m just done with these guys. This is not a rock band, and they will not sell records. The judges like the performance.

The Clark Brothers - “Homestead”

It was a pretty cool blues song. These guys should win this competition. The lead singer was a little off tonight, but I still enjoyed it.

Light of Doom - “Matter of Time”

It’s teenagers performing a song that borders on parody of heavy metal. However, almost every performance of heavy metal sounds like a parody to me, so who knows? The song was also mercifully short. It wasn’t much of a song. The judges are pretty negative, but they are all encouraging.

Sixwire - “Go On”

They performed a mediocre ballad that they wrote. This could be the kind of thing, if they make a good video, could get popular on the country charts. One of the weaker performances of the season from Sixwire. The judges love it, and it makes me want to gage my eyes out with a spoon.

Denver and the Mile High Orchestra - “Big White House”
Their original was same ol’, same ol’.

Your thoughts on tonights show and the voting off of Dot Dot Dot?

Of course Denver & The Mile High Orchestra (DMHO) isn’t a rock band - they’re a Big Band/Swing Band. Duh. But I’m glad whoever wrote the blog about the 12/7/07 show wrote what he/she did. It highlights a fundamental problem in America: the disappointing results of cutting funding for school music programs over the past several years. We now have a musically illiterate populace, to some extent. So many think that ALL music is supposed to be rock, rap and grunge, and are simply unaccepting of music that differs from this narrow range. Don’t get me wrong - I LOVE R&R. I grew up in the ’60s. But the intelligent individual will learn to explore, study and appreciate a wide variety of musical genres. The blog writer’s lack of musical education parallels a lack of general education, as well - an observation validated by his/her use of “buy-the-numbers” instead of “by the numbers”, and “gage my eyes out” instead of “gouge”. I rest my case. Researchers claim that an early musical education usually leads to improved general learning. Need I say moe about that? DMHO will continue to sell CDs. They’ve already sold a ton of them. I have all six or seven they’ve recorded (and multiple copies of “Timeless Christmas”, which I gave to family and friends as gifts), in addition to their two DVDs (just pre-ordered the second). These guys are high on the contenporary Christian music charts, which is the fastest growing music category right now. XM satellite radio plays their music frequently (channel 32 - The Message). Their talent and, especially, versatility were showcased last evening, and the judges acknowledged it. Even Dicko looked totally surprised with what John Rzeznick termed “grease” in Denver Bierman’s voice. Those who have followed DMHO over the past few years already knew about this band’s incredible talent and versatility. Check out their website at http://www.denvermho.com I like three of the four remaining bands (Light of Doom is the one I don’t care for). Hopefully, one of the three will win. No doubt, all three will continue to be successful. They’re good.

I agree with the above comment except that one would not tell Chicago to their face they are not a rock band as they could play it all! The reason I feel DMHO has gone so far may be because I would say that 99.9% of the audience is too young to remember what having brass in a band sounds like! It may be a novelty for most and I sadly concur that with our focus on the jock world, we a regressing to a Neanderthal mentality!

I find it hard to believe that DMHO received more votes than DotDotDot. Sure, they are great musicians, but every single song they do sounds exactly the same. Who would buy their c.d.? DDD will go on to acheive super stardom.

I’m just glad the Clarke Bros. and Sixwire are still in it. They’re by far the best musicians, and the Bros. have a very genuine spark that you don’t see very often. Both bands are consummate arrangers and musicians, and I wish them luck after the show.

Light of Doom are good for their age, but kind of silly when it comes down to it. DMHO are great musicians, but Denver gives me the creeps and their schtick gets old quick.

Sounds to me like someone has an extreme bias against metal, which should be left out of further posts. Show some respect for ALL Music genres, please.

Actually a lot of people have already been buying DMHO albums for years now. Several of them are on iTunes already. The Christmas album is very popular. So to say they have no market compared to the other bands is a lack of knowledge of genres. I think DMHO is getting votes due to their extensive touring of the country already and having a loyal fan base. See to me every rock, rap and pop song sounds exactly the same, no matter who the artist is. And most of it is unsuitable for kids.

i really don’t know who is buying DHMO’S CD’S?, lets face it! DHMO will not make it big!, yes they are good at what they do, but i dont think Denver has the voice for this HUGE BAND!, sorry but if people think that the world is going to hell in a hand basket, b/cuz of country rock???, [i dont think so] afterall it’s NOT devil worshiping music!, country music is the back bone of american music, and sixwire has IT! these guys are great! and they will sell CD’S and can make it big, if they get the right agent, and the market for sixwire’s music is HUGE!, sorry DMHO fans, but these guys just wont make it big! now if i went to dinner and a band like DMHO were playing, i would say that was fun, BUT i dont know any of my friends or family members that would buy anything DMHO puts out, even my mom, who is 81 years old loves this kind of music, but she said they dont make BIG BANDS like they use to!, DMNO has like what? 13 or 15 members in thier band, thats alot of votes from family members and friends, if sixwire, or even the Clark bros dont win this!, it will really be ashame, cuz lets face it, if DMHO does win, it will only be, b/cuz of thier huge band with all thier family and friends voting!

I think it is totally relevant that DMHO has a lot of family, friends and fans voting. Apparently they have more support than all of the other bands because they are still in it. Those votes turn into fans and turn into CD sales. So if the other bands don’t have enough family, friends and fans voting then that’s a shame. I guess they won’t sell many CDs because folks don’t support them enough to vote on the show and help them make it big.
All of the musicians in DMHO have music degrees. They know every genre of music and play them well. I’m sure that everyone who is bad mouthing DMHO has not been to one of their concerts. They do attract a ton of people and play great stuff. So go ahead and vote for the old men, the kids that play like crap, or the country boys with the crazy eyes. I’ll take the variety and musicianship of DMHO any day.

Actually there arent as many people voting as you would think. The shows ratings have been ranked among the lowest and only increased last Friday because the network faked out America and changed the time slot. Most people thought they were tuning in to watch “Can you name that lyric” or whatever the show is called.
As for DMHO they will never reach the kind of stardom that other great bands have reached because their style of music is not popular with the “majority” of people that spend billions a year on concerts and record sales. And I’m not sold on the fact that Sixwire will either. They have been recording for 10 years and have already been signed with major recording labels in the past and failed to reach super stardom. And most of America had never even heard of them before the show. Let’s face it, the guys are not spring chickens! Most of their performances have been dull and their sound is not original. Which probably explains they have failed to stand out in an already saturated genre of music. The Clark Brothers are the only band with actual potential for greatness. They are young, attractive, and awe inspiring musicians who have a unique style and sound that is all their own. They are not the “cookie cutter” band that the other bands from the show are.

I agree with the post, and with most of the comments.

Unfortunately, only one band will win, and thats the nature of the show. And commentors will always argue, thats the nature of blogging.

I think all the bands bring something interesting to the table (except Light of Doom… and sixwire)

Actually, come to think of it, I’m not as open minded as I thought.

Point is, The Clark Brothers were the best from the beginning- they rocked out with only 3 acoustic instruments and some killer vocals. But they probably won’t sell albums, or at least no more than the closest like band I can think of, Nickelcreek (who sold nearly 2 million albums combined)

DMHO- I appreciate them being here, and I’m surprised they’re still on.
I think you can appreciate their music, but doubt they’re going to win. I think they’ll sell records, everybody sells records, but they will never be a band of significance. The Christian market is growing… but Christian worship music makes up most of that… which DMHO is not.

I agree that Light of Doom is terrible and annoying, but all metal today is terrible and annoying (except Zakk Wyld, which LOD is not)

Sixwire has bored me since the first note they played. They are exactly what is wrong with country music and America.

I would be completely pissed that Franklin Bridge is off, but I live near enough to Philly (and the actual Ben Franklin Bridge) to see them whenever I want.

Oh, I forgot to mention DDD. I admire their ambition. I hope someday they become yesterday’s next-big-thing.

    Wait, they already are.

Here folks is a great example of what kids thought was cool last week. They’ll make a great lounge act when The Killers play Vegas.

Seriously, best of luck to those guys, again, they had drive.

  • 12 trisha // Dec 20, 2007 at 12:13 pm

afew post above, someone said, that DMHO will sell CD’S. well [yes] they already have, BUT not much!, so that leaves me to think that DMHO doesnt know how to market themselves or the market doesnt know how to market them,if they did these guys would have already made it big! yes the BAND is GREAT! but IMO Denver is not, his voice is just not up to this BIG BAND! and this show’s ratings are very LOW! and there is NOT alot of fan votes coming in, yes some, BUT not alot, the votes for the most part are coming from family, friends, and friends of friends, so DMHO could win this! WOW that would be ashame, cuz the Clark Bros and Sixwire are so much better than DMHO!, i do agree that the Clark Bros could go BIG, they got talent, they are Org, and the most important thing is, and i hate to say it, is they are very good looking and young!, and that my friends sells CD’S and CONCERTS!

  • 13 trisha // Dec 20, 2007 at 5:20 pm

sorry but i got to add something here! a poster said go ahead and vote for the old men?, i think D&MHO have some guys in there as old or older than sixwire, and the kids are gone [as they should be] IMO the clark bros and sixwire are the only bands that 19 records can market …..period…..DMHO might win this , but deal or no deal, they wont make it! there isnt a market for these guys, maybe if they got a GREAT SINGER, even then i dont think so. again this is just my opinon, and all of the people i know and my family. and if denver wins, yes it will be ONLY for thier family and friends voting they are a 12 member band???? that is huge, american idol gets 2 millions votes in one mintue! this show has only gotten 2 million in 2 hours!, think about it! clark bros desreve it!, and i wouldnt mine sixwire winning it! but not DMHO, and if they do win, it will be b/cuz of family and friends votes, with just a very few fan votes, i had to laugh, i told my hubby when the host said 2 million votes came in this week, i looked at my hubby and said. with DMHO having 12 members in thier band, i am sure they got atlease a million votes in from family and friends, lets face it, the fans that are voting that dont know these guys in person are voting for the clark bros or sixwire!
