Tres Bien Voted Off Great American Band
The top five bands on The Next Great American Band took on the awesomeness of Rod Stewart this week, as we once again said goodbye to another band. Which band would be leaving us this week? That, naturally, was saved for the end of the show.
First up was a recap of last week’s performances, followed by a clip of how awesome Rod Stewart is. The bands then talked about how difficult it is to cover Rod Stewart.
The first band to be taken off the chopping block was Dot Dot Dot. The band clips tonight featured the band members taking about their influences. For Dot Dot Dot, the influences include Genesis and the Beatles. Their song choice tonight was “Young Turks.” Their performance was wonderful, I’m amazed at how much all of the bands have grown since I saw the show last! John Rzeznick thought it was their best performance yet. Sheila E. liked the energy, but told Adam to keep focusing on his vocals and to concentrate on the tempo. Ian “Dicko” Dickson thought they didn’t tell the story of the original very well.
Denver and the Mile High Orchestra was up next. Several band members named their parents as influences, while Denver himself picked Huey Lewis and the News. They performed “Baby Jane.” They seem to have worked very hard to rise to the challenge of being more current. They’ve improved a lot in that department, without changing their basic sound. John noticed that Denver really pushed his vocal perofrmance up a lot this week. He also liked that the guitarist was featured more. Sheila wondered if the band had trouble finding lyrics every week what with their faith and all. Denver said it was difficult sometimes to find the perfect song. Dicko loved the perofrmance to a point. He liked the tone and energy and that the band was trying to meet their new fans halfway. He didn’t like the road the band had taken to shorten the song though.
Country act Sixwire named Glenn Campbell, the Beatles, the Eagles, and Boston as some of their influences. They rocked the house a bit with “Hot Legs.” John liked the more muscular version, but didn’t like the bass solo. That was a sentiment echoed by all of the judges, who obviously hate bass players. Personally I love bass, so I liked the bass solo. Dicko did like them better when they let their hair down and get sexy though.
The Clark Brothers were next up to make the audience swoon. They named bluegrass and gospel as their influences (that’s a shocker I know). Their performance of “You’re in My Heart” moved the audience and the judges. John was moved, and loves how Ashley attaches all the emotion to that song. Sheila just sort of sniffled and was speechless. Eventually she said it’s overwhelming what the boys bring. Dicko told the brothers they brought something magical, but wondered why they didn’t use the fiddle this time. Ashley said he tried it but it didn’t work. Dicko pointed out that all of the bands are able to hire or fire members at any time, and employ temporary people to play with them.
Then we were down to either Light of Doom or Tres Bien! to perform. Tres Bien! were given the axe, leaving Light of Doom to wander their way to the stage. All of the judges told the band they were great. The band said the most important thing they learned was that they wanted to become a better band.
Light of Doom named The Who, Alice in Chains, Iron Maiden, Tommy Lee and Eddie Van Halen as their influences. The boys picked “Infatuation” to perform. I’m very amazed at how they have grown since I saw the show last. Erik has really improved his vocals and the band didn’t have an overwhelmingly heavy tone this week. John liked that they were reaching our more, and commented on Erik’s strong vocal this week. Sheila also noted the stronger vocal performance. Dicko liked the swing to the song and asked Erik if he had been taking vocal lessons. Erik said he had for awhile now. Dicko told the band the only thing missing was his voice and they are really getting better.
