Catching up with Amanda Overmyer

Amanda Overmyer wasn’t crushed by her elimination from American Idol last Wednesday, she’s taking it in stride.

“(Being cut from Idol) wasn’t the most traumatic thing that’s happened in my life,” she told People magazine.

“I was thankful to be there and privileged to have millions of Americans vote for me just to keep me on (that long)… I’m cut out of a different mould of everyone else on the competition; I found that very warming that I had that much support.”

As for what’s next, Overmyer will see what happens.

“I’m a very ambitious and driven person by nature and I’m going to take calculated risks to achieve success, but… success to me is a strong healthy family and success in whatever job you do and I wouldn’t have it in me if this is just 15 minutes of fame.“

The Emmy Award-winning IDOL GIVES BACK returns with an illustrious group of celebrity participants to help raise awareness and funds to benefit various U.S. and international charities Wednesday, April 9 (7:30-10:00 ET/PT) on FOX.

American Idol brought back Katharine McPhee last week during the result show, so it’s only fitting another former Idol return for the Wednesday Night March 19, 2008 voted off results show. That Idol would be season five’s Kellie Pickler.

Season Five finalist Kellie Pickler returns to the AMERICAN IDOL stage, to perform her hit single, “Red High Heels,” Wednesday, March 19 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX.

After competing on AMERICAN IDOL, Pickler signed with 19 Recordings/BNA Records, and soon thereafter released her debut album, “Small Town Girl.” The album quickly became the best-selling debut by a solo country artist that year and was certified gold in January 2007.

Pickler was recently nominated for Top New Female Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music, and earned her first Country Music Association nomination last fall. Idol Runner-up Katharine McPhee and newlywed husband Nick Cokas went to Hawaii for their honeymoon. The two were recently wed last Saturday.

The 23-year-old singer-actress and producer Cokas, 42, were married on Saturday in Beverly Hills before heading to the tropical getaway of Oahu. Romance wasn’t the only thing on McPhee’s mind as she was spotted shopping at the local Gucci store – but they couple did stop for a post-purchase hug.

“[Nick] is the love of my life,” McPhee gushed to PEOPLE about her wedding. “This is a once in a lifetime occasion and everything is just perfect.”

He might be a lot older than she is, but they look cute together and happy to be soaking up the sun!

In September, OK! was the first to reveal that Kat and Nick, who is 19 years older than his new bride, were engaged. And only a few weeks ago, the singer confessed to OK! that she was desperately trying to get in shape for the wedding.

“I do 20 to 30 minutes of cardio three times a week if I’m lucky, four times if I’m really lucky,” Katherine told OK!’s Red Carpet Confidential blog. “I just started doing lunges with dumbbells, and I just started doing shoulder stuff, arm stuff, back stuff.”

A label source confirmed McPhee’s departure, which was first reported by Entertainment Weekly.

McPhee struggled to connect with a wide audience with her debut, which was led by the single “Over It.” That track topped out at No. 22 on Billboard’s Top 40 Mainstream chart and No. 29 on the Hot 100. The album has sold just 366,000 units in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

As McPhee told Billboard last year, she quickly realized the art of the compromise when it came to record the album, fresh off the road from the “American Idols Live” tour.

McPhee fell particularly in love with two tracks from producer Ryan Leslie, but then they wound up not making the cut. “I’m learning that’s the way it goes in this business,” she said. “You give and you take.”

In contrast to “Idol” stars like Bo Bice and Hicks, who had already spent years pursuing a music career, McPhee’s prior experience was limited to musical theater. Once in album-making mode, she also struggled with putting her own stamp on material that had been submitted by veteran songwriters.

“The demos, it’s so hard once you hear whoever is singing to get that out of your head, especially for me, being new to recording,” she said. Being able to craft songs with outside collaborators like Danja, Babyface and Kara DioGuardi generated “the memory of where we were when we were writing the song. There’s a kind of history behind it.”

TMZ gives the report from the show and muses gleefully that the best way to get to second base with Katherine McPhee — ask her to prove she’s never had a boob job!

Fans of last year’s ”American Idol” runner-up may be surprised at Kat ‘07: a sexed-up, urbanized siren programmed to do battle with Ciara, Christina and Beyonce. While her soaring version of ”Somewhere Over The Rainbow” was credited by many with catapulting her into the finals of the nationwide competition, there’s much less of that kind of singing here. It may disappoint fans who liked the good-girl image she displayed on the show.

Her producers and handlers meticulously calculated everything on this disc (”Katharine McPhee,” RCA) to appeal to the widest possible range of listeners and broadcast formats, from hip-hop to pop to R&B to adult contemporary (I kept waiting for heavy metal and polka tracks to surface, just to cover every possible combination). Sometimes it works, such as on the opening track, ”Love Story,” featuring McPhee’s trademark ”ooh-oohs” that evoke her (repeated) performances of ”Black Horse In A Cherry Tree” on the show last year.

And sometimes it doesn’t, such as on ”Open Toes,” a hip-hop ode to shoe shopping where she sounds quite out of her element. ”Do What You Do” has somewhat more street credibility, fitting in easily on urban stations or BET.

”Not Ur Girl” is the closest thing to a mainstream pop song for the teeny-bopper audience, with a catchy melody over a standard rock beat that makes it the most accessible song on the album.

But it’s on the power ballads ”Home” and ”Ordinary World” that McPhee shows she really can sing, with a voice that is at once sultry and breathy in the lower registers, and strong when it needs to be in the higher ranges. These two tracks, destined for dentist offices and supermarkets around the world, will remind listeners why they voted for her in the first place.
