Jordin Sparks is a talented musician, and one of which we would not know of if it were not for American Idol. Although with the talent Jordin Sparks’ has it was only inevitable that she would become a walking success. Clearly Jordin Sparks knows how to sing and she won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

Biography
Jordin Brianna Sparks was born on December 22, 1989, in Phoenix, Arizona, to mother Jodi Weidmann (who is white) and father Phillippi Sparks (who is black), a former NFL defensive back. After attending Orchard Elementary School in Rodgewood, New Jersey, Jordin Sparks attended Community Christian School before going on to Sandra Day O’Connor High School. She dropped out in 2006 and was homeschooled for the remainder of high school so she could give more attention to her singing.

Jordin Sparks began taking part in various singing competitions and, in 2006, she was one of six winners in the Torrid search for the next plus-sized model. That was the year Jordin Sparks also found herself auditioning for American Idol in front of three of the toughest, most well-known judges: Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell.

While performing on Season Six of American Idol, Jordin Sparks not only gained recognition from the judges but she also gained a solid fanbase of “sparkplugs.” She was never in the bottom two or three throughout the entire show, and she won the season in May 2007.

Following her win, Jordin Sparks made appearances on Live With Regis and Kelly, The Today Show, The View, and Larry King Live, and she was featured in Entertainment Weekly, TV Guide, Glamour, and more.

In 2007, Jordin Sparks released her debut self-titled album to favorable reviews. The hit “Tattoo” went on to become a top 10 single, and “No Air” soared to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In February 2008, Jordin Sparks sang the national anthem at Super Bowl XLII. She went on to become the opening act on the Alicia Keys’ As I Am tour.

Who does Former American Idol Winner (Season 6) Jordin Sparks  want to to be the NEXT American Idol? None other than Rocker David Cook!

“Based on last week, David Cook went way up in my book,” she tells Usmagazine.com of the Missouri native, 25, who impressed her with his performance of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

“I’m an Idol freak!” she adds. “I watched the show before I was on it, and I watch now. “I can’t vote as much as I would like to, but I vote.”

In other Jordin News, she also revealed she has a crush on Idol Bad Boy Judge Simon Cowell.

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks says she is a “very, very, very happy” girl after singing the national anthem at The Super Bowl on Sunday.

Jordin’s big moment was even more special because her father, retired football star Phillippi Sparks, once played for the New York Giants. (The Giants beat the New England Patriots 17-14.)

“You couldn’t ask for a more fitting story,” her father told the Associated Press.

After helping to inaugurate University Of Phoenix Stadium in 2006, Glendale’s American Idol, Jordin Sparks, returned to her hometown to sing the national anthem for Super Bowl XLII.

With her family looking on, Sparks performed the anthem in the winning style that brought her the crown on the American Idol reality show last year.

Dressed in a sleevless, black dress and high heels, Sparks seemed happy and relaxed as she sang a smooth, low-key version of the anthem. She added an Idol-like vocal flourish as an ending.

She sang to piped-in music while standing on a pedestal on the field.

Sparks has been spending some time at home with her parents, former NFL star Philippi Sparks and his wife, Jodi.

She is expected to tour this year to support her new, self-titled debut album.

Jordin Sparks is taking on late night with talk show host Spike Feresten to perform her hit single “Tattoo.”

In case you haven’t seen it, TALKSHOW WITH SPIKE FERESTEN is a fast-paced half-hour that combines elements of a talk show with a studio audience and sit-down guests and adds to those elements with irreverent comedy sketches – both inside the studio and out on the street. Hosted by Emmy-nominated writer SPIKE FERESTEN (”Seinfeld,” “Late Show with David Letterman”), TALKSHOW offers a fresh approach to the conventional late-night format.

Talkshow with Spike Feresten airs Saturday, Jan. 19 (Midnight-12:30 AM ET/PT) on FOX.

Those are some of the song titles from Sparks’ self-titled debut album, which oozes the earnestness that endeared the bubbly 17-year-old to gazillions of tween girls – and their mothers – as she sang to victory on “American Idol.”

Sparks has the wholesome appeal of a Disney Channel star – clearly an asset, at a time when Miley Cyrus/”Hannah Montana” is selling out stadiums in no less than four minutes.

That’s why it’s slightly jarring when Sparks turns into a club vixen on the Britney-esque “Young And In Love,” which is perhaps the musical equivalent of learning too much about your little sister. Granted, Sparks is nearly 18 – but still.

That said, this album as a whole is tame, upbeat, free from innuendo – something you might expect from the telegenic teen, who suggests original “Idol” Kelly Clarkson in terms of likability but lacks the Grammy winner’s irresistible bravado.

The disc consists mainly of slickly produced songs about boys (”No Air,” “Now You Tell Me”) and feel-good empowerment tunes (”One Step At A Time,” “This Is My Now”). But it takes a decidedly maudlin turn with “God Loves Ugly,” which has the comely singer asking: “With all of my blemishes, how could somebody want me?” Come on! You’re Jordin Sparks!

A standout is “Next To You.” The sugary-sweet pop song, a perfect fit for Sparks’ naturally soulful voice, gets better after several listens. “Maybe we’re friends/Maybe we’re more/Maybe it’s just my imagination/But I see you stare just a little too long and it makes me start to wonder,” she croons over smooth harmonies and crisp handclaps.

And that’s enough to keep you wondering what else Sparks may have in store.

So the album is called Jordin Sparks, can you tell us specifically about the songs on the album? The influences? What fans can expect?

Well, I guess there’s a little bit of everything for everybody. There are songs that are more guitar driven. There are songs that make you want to think. There are songs that are more rhythmic. There are definitely some ballads on there because everybody knows that I love to do ballads, so there’s some of that also. But I guess it’s just like me, just a good mix of everything and I really hope that people like it. I think works. I think it works out.

Was there any of those 9 on the tour who kind of broke out and maybe impressed more so than they did on the show?

I really think that Chris Richardson really showed a different side to him because he played the drums and played the guitar and he did a whole bunch of different genres. Like he did the duet with me that was country. He did Maroon 5. He did Jason Mraz. He did Gnarles Barkley. Like it was really crazy to see how versatile he was. I actually think that kind of applies to everybody actually now that I think about it. We did so many different things on the tour that we didn’t really get to show on TV, so I really think it applies to everybody.

The 2007 American Idols Live summer concert tour plays at 7 p.m., Wednesday at Jobing.com Arena. The performance marks Jordin’s first return home since she had two weeks’ vacation to spend with her family in early June, after a whirlwind media tour following her Idol win.

In an interview before leaving for the tour, Jordin told The Glendale Republic that she would be singing a few songs that she made popular while on Idol, as well as an acoustic number where she would play the guitar.

Jordin’s stay in the Valley will be short, as the tour plays San Diego on June 19. Jordin’s mother, Jodi Wiedmann, and grandmother, Pam Wiedmann, are accompanying her on the 57-city tour as her legal guardians. Jordin turns 18 on Dec. 22.

Her family members remaining in Glendale and several fans who attended Westgate City Center American Idol viewing parties early this year are expected to attend the evening’s concert.

Westgate spokesman Jeff Hecht said staff is working to book Jordin for a concert on the center’s lawn once the Idols tour concludes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, singer Katherine McPhee will make her major motion picture debut in an upcoming comedy that stars Anna Faris. The 23-year-old 2006 American Idol runner-up will appear alongside Emma Stone, Rumer Willis, Kat Dennings and Dana Goodman. The yet-to-be titled film centers on “a Playboy bunny who gets kicked out of the Playboy Mansion and becomes the house mother to the lamest sorority on campus.”

Phillippi Sparks grew up in west Phoenix in poverty condition, but after a long struggle he made it into the NFL, where he played for nine seasons, and in a family, where he and his wife, Jodi, produced a daughter who suddenly is more recognizable than all the members of President Bush’s Cabinet.

“Two days ago, she was hugging Tom Cruise, and yesterday, Kevin Costner kissed her on the cheek,” Phillippi said. “Oh my goodness.”

Jordin’s weekly exposure on American Idol and the frequent cutaway shots to her parents have thrust Phillippi back into a spotlight, one that dimmed when he retired from the NFL in 2001 after eight years as a cornerback with the New York Giants and one with the Dallas Cowboys.

Locally, his name always has meant something. He was a standout at Maryvale High School and Glendale Community College before his success at Arizona State catapulted him to the pros.

His newly re-charmed life was no sure thing.

Sparks’ mom, Guinnetta, struggled to raise her children. She worked long hours but managed “to kick our (backsides) if we got out of line,” Sparks said.

“It was tough. I remember when the other kids had Nikes, we had Payless. We had to rely on food stamps and welfare. It made you humble, and it drove me to not want to be like that. I wasn’t embarrassed, but I knew there was something else.”

Phillippi, too, was a gifted singer as a youth, and his mother frequently entered him in talent shows. His greatest talent was in sports, however, and he excelled as a Junior Olympics boxer and as a standout basketball player. But football opened the most doors.

Sparks’ neighborhood was rich in talent. Former NFL players Darren Woodson and Kevin Miniefield lived nearby. After Maryvale, Sparks attended Glendale Community College, where he played football and met Jodi Weidmann.

Sparks went on to ASU in 1990 and was 20 when he married Weidmann. With college studies, football and a new baby, Jordin, life was challenging.

For a while, Jodi hid from Phillippi the fact that she was using food stamps to buy groceries.

“I began wondering how the grocery bags got full,” he said. Occasionally, his father-in-law, Jim, would slip him a few extra dollars on the side. Weidmann also helped deflect attention from agents so Sparks could focus on school and train for a potential NFL career.

“I love that man so much,” Sparks said. “He made things easier for me.”

Meanwhile, young Jordin began to sing. When family friends would visit, she would break out in song.

At school, at church, at local fish fries and any time the opportunity presented itself, she shared her talent.

Because Phillippi’s NFL career forced the family to move several times during her childhood, Jordin learned how to adapt effortlessly to new situations. It contributed to the poise she demonstrated so well on Idol.

Phillippi retired from the NFL in 2001, when Jordin was 11.

It wasn’t an easy decision. Although he made it to the playoffs twice with the Giants, they didn’t advance to the Super Bowl until the season after he left.

Retirement did give him more time to spend with his daughter and son, P.J.

Jordin began singing at numerous competitions and in 2004, a talent manager for Christian singer Michael W. Smith spotted her. Soon, she joined the popular singer on tour.

Meanwhile, Phillippi reminded her of his life path.

“Remember,” he said. “Anything is attainable.”

When she turned 16, Jordin tried out for American Idol’s Season 5 in Los Angeles. A producer told her, “You’re not good enough,” Phillippi recalled.

Jordin told her father that day that she was going to “pray to the Lord to shut all the doors, and if one opens, that’s what I’ll do.” The next day, a scout for Torrid, a plus-size modeling agency, saw her and asked if she would like to model for the company. She did, and doors continued to open.

In November, she won an Arizona Idol contest on Channel 10 and an opportunity to audition in Seattle for the national show.

“Our lives got crazy, but it was my wife who kept our family glued,” Sparks said.

Recently, Sparks has helped coach football at Glendale Community College, but his life is about to become much busier. Even though they will hire an agency to work with Jordin’s career, the parents plan to have a heavy role in the day-to-day managing.

In the meantime, Phillippi plans to embrace the moment.

“The highs of playing football don’t compare to this,” he said. “This is your flesh and blood, and you had a part in making it. Amazing.

“I mean, I never got to the Super Bowl. She did.”
