Gary Jules, the singer whose 2001 remake of Tears for Fears‘ “Mad World” garnered critical acclaim and landed as the feature song in the film Donnie Darko, is praising Adam Lambert‘s cover-of-a-cover during Tuesday night’s performance.
Jules, who is a closet Idol fan, said, “I ran out and I was like, `I knew he was gonna do it! I knew it!’” he recalls. “I’ve been waiting for years for somebody to do it. I thought David Cook was gonna do it last year for sure. … As soon as I saw that guy Adam on `American Idol,’ I was like, ‘Oooh, this could be it.’”
Gary Jules, who once got a call from Tears for Fears singer Roland Orzabal letting him know that Orzabal liked Jules’ version better than the original, expressed that he thought Lambert put his own spin on the song.
“It was fantastic,” he says. “He has a beautiful voice. … I heard his Michael Jackson cover and I heard some of his other stuff, and I think that he’s probably one of the most — if not the most — interesting performer I’ve ever seen on `American Idol.’”

THANK YOU SO MUCH, Gary!!! I just love what Adam did to the song. He is such an unusual talent! I can hardly wait to see what he will do next!

Unfortunately I don’t think Adam’s voice really did this song any justice.
