Last week, Megan Joy Caw Caw!-ed her way out of the competition, leaving just two girls and six guys left standing this week. Tonight they will be singing songs from the year they were born! That means hopefully lots of 80s goodness, and I really hope that this will be the last we will have to hear from Scott MacIntyre (dear VFTW: I understand what you’re doing and respect it, but I just don’t think I could handle Scott for one more episode!). Keep checking in with us as we will dish out our thoughts of tonight’s episode live as it happens!

Tonight we’re going to see lots of Idol contestants’ baby pictures, and first thing we see are little baby Randy, Kara, Paula, Simon, and even Ryan. My favorite was Simon, because I think he was holding a gun! Even a baby, he was a little bad@$$!

First up tonight is Danny Gokey, who as a child looked the same but had round glasses instead of square. He’s singing “Stand by Me”. He’s also the oldest contestant of the night. I actually don’t mind this.  Could I be going soft?  Randy:  “I didn’t love the arrangement, but I loved your vocals!” Kara: “You killed it!” Paula: “Wow, you have set the bar so high that everyone is going to have to run and catch up.” Simon: “The beginning was good, the middle was lazy, and the end was terrific.”

Kris Allen is next, and he looks much older for some reason…did he get a haircut?  He was born in 1985 and is singing “All She Wants to do is Dance”.  Hmm, I love his last few choices, but this isn’t my thing. Kara: “That felt like jazz-funk homework.”  Paula: “you’re one of the most likable contestants” Simon: “Likable, yes. But it was indulgent, boring, forgettable, and a stupid, stupid song choice.”  Randy: “I was listening to the instruments and the arrangement and lost you in the song.”

Next is Lil Rounds, singing “What’s Love Got to Do With it?” It’s very copycat to me, but there are definitely worse people she could be copying than Tina Turner!  Paula: “You should have created your own niche with this classic song, and it’s starting to become a beautiful karaoke rendition.” Simon: “Ghastly copycat performance, you’re not making the impact you should be making.”  Sidebar: Lil looks really good tonight!  Randy: “You’re not listening to us!” Kara: “You need to make that leap from a singer to an artist.”

Anoop is rocking an awesome 80s lime green and white striped sweater tonight. His song of choice is “True Colors”, and I’m hoping his rendition does his sweater justice! I know it’s his week to go, but I’m not ready to say goodbye just yet. There are worse people in the competition in my opinion (how about…everyone? Well, Kris and Allison can stay).  I really like his version…slow songs are his thang, dawg.  Randy: “Very nice vocal…I like that, dude!” Kara: “You controlled the song; you didn’t let it control you.” Paula: “Choice of song was flawless, and you showed your true colors; fantastic.”  Simon: “You’re like a singing yo-yo…one minute you’re down, the next you’re up.”

Following Anoop is Scott MacIntyre, who had childhood dreams of becoming a train conductor.  He’s singing “The Search is Over”, and he has a guitar instead of his usual piano.  Kara: “You had some good moments and off ones”. Paula: “I was confused when you pulled out the electric guitar instead of the acoustic guitar.” Scott’s reply: “That’s my punk side coming out!” Simon: “The song was atrocious, and the guitar wasn’t much better.”  Poor guy, I like him, but I really don’t want to hear him sing anymore.

Allison is the youngest contestant and the only person with a song from the 90s.  She’s singing “I Can’t Make You Love Me”.  Her outfit is still strange, but she rocks her vocals as usual!  Paula:  “I loved that you had some tenderness to this song that is so gut-wrenching.” Simon: “I thought this was very good, but we need to make you more likable.”  Randy: “You remind me so much of Kelly Clarkson!” Kara: “Let’s go make a record, man!”

Matt Giraud is singing “Part-Time Lover”. He was a really cute kid!  It sounds a little like Stevie Wonder, the original singer, but it’s good vocally. But he shouldn’t do any copycatting after last week!  Randy:  “Vocally, one of the best of the night!” Kara: Incredibly, unbelieveable!” Paula: “2 words: Standing O” Simon: “A million times better than last week”

One minute left in the show, and we’re on commercial break, and we still have Adam Lambert to get to! What will Fringe do?

Adam is singing “Mad World” by Tears for Fears.  I have a feeling he will do the Gary Jules version.  And he does!  It’s kind of pretty, one of my favorite songs ever, and he keeps the screaming to a minimum.  Simon lamented that they were out of time and he would be the only one talking, but he gave him a standing ovation! Might be the first ever for Simon.

Okay, here were my best and worst of the night:

Best:  Anoop, Allison, Matt, and Adam

Okay: Danny, Kris, Lil

Worst: Scott

What were your thoughts?

this was one of the Lamer Shows of the season, I hate the ballads. Adam Lambert however is in a league of his own, followed by Allison.

The judges through LIL under the bus, but why did she attempt to act, sound and make movements Identical to that of Tina Tuner? That was a mistake, even though she did sound pretty good.

Danny was decent, Matt was ok and Scott will be voted off American Idol Tomorrow night.

    Amen!

I don’t know why people like Adam and Danny so much!!! Danny isn’t nearly as good as Kris and Adam isn’t good. I really don’t like him! I hope he gets kicked off in the Top 5 so the judges can’t save him… sorry, needed to vent that one. Sorry, Adam just doesn’t impress me.

And I agree, Scott should leave. That way, I win the bet with my friends this week. ;-)

Well here I am refreshed enough to give my thoughts. I was purely exhausted last night! Anyhow Jebbica I actually agree with your rankings. I am finding it hard to label these contestants because I feel they are a roller coaster. They all tend to go up and down. One week they are rocking our worlds and the next they are dragging us down. When you see one of the contestants best you wish they could pull that off every single week, but clearly it is not happening. This week the possibilities for Kris, Scott or Anoop are strong for them to go home. Anoop doesn’t deserve it it all especially after yesterday and yeah the sweater rocked! Kris did a decent job. Scott was horrible and I will be disappointed if anybody but him goes home.

    American Idol Fan :
I could not agree with you more and your analogy of last nights’ performances.
Allison , for being 16 , is by far, the best female vocalist.
Adam, as you said, is in a league of his own. This is the best performance I’ve ever seen since the show began!!!! He rocks.
