Tonight, the final 12 of the top 36 on American Idol 8 will sing for their suppers (and our votes!). Fingers crossed things don’t go as horribly as the last two weeks! Unfortunately, there’s no primo entertainment like Tatiana or Normund Gentle this week. Stay tuned here on Idol Mania as we dish out the play-by-play!
Oh wait, I forgot about Nathaniel Marshall and Von Smith! This might just be entertaining after all.
“Screamy” Von Smith is up first and is singing “You’re all I need to get by” by Marvin Gaye. Without screaming, he has trouble staying on pitch. Simon said it was a very hot performance, and I couldn’t disagree more! The other judges liked him, even Simon, who only noted that he looked “appalling”.
17-year-old Taylor Vaifanua is next, singing “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys. She wasn’t bad, but she was so bland that the judges changed instead of critiqing to talking about shopping and her favorite brand of cereal.
Alex Wagner-Trugman Googled himself and discovered that he was a little bit dorky, so he’s been working out. I’m a sucker for nerds, so I kinda dig him. He’s singing “I Guess That’s Why they Call it the Blues” by Elton John. It was a very…interesting rendition! He reminded me of a 4-year-old showing out. Simon called him a little hamster trying to be a tiger.
Arianna Afsar is totally adorable, but so were Casey Carlson and Ann Marie Boskovich. Will she have what it takes to get through the next round? She’s singing “The Winner Takes it All” by ABBA. I thought she sounded pretty good, but the judges hated it.
Ju’Not Joyner is singing the song that got Jamar Rogers cut, “Hey There Delilah” by the Plain White Ts. I definitely liked Jamar’s version better! But Ju’Not does sing like John Legend, so he could do well. Randy said it was a smart choice slowing it down and he loved it. Kara said it was smooth, and Simon sounds like he’s gone soft by saying “I know how much this means to you”.
Kristen McNamara is singing “Give Me One Reason” by Tracey Chapman. She reminds me of a less-attractive Mena Suvari. The judges were puzzled with her song choice and outfit, though they acknowledged that she had good vocals.
It’s Nathaniel Marshall’s turn! Turn on the DRAMA! And he’s singing “I Would Do Anything for Love” by Meatloaf, which spells LOVE for me. He actually “works it out”, as Randy says IMHO. It does remind me of a Jazz-ercise video, however. Simon called it excruciating, then said he should make a “keep fit video” (See!?). Kara basically says the market isn’t ready for someone as flamboyant as he is regarding record sales.
Felicia Barton is the “Shocker” of the group, replacing Joanna Pacitti. She better hope Joanna isn’t sitting somewhere with a sniper rifle! She’s singing “No One” by Alicia Keys. Randy said it was hot, and Kara thought she looked great.
Next is Scott MacIntyre, who I hope doesn’t try to dance. He’s singing some song I didn’t catch. The judges were nice, despite his lackluster vocals. He seems so nice though, and even tried to high-five Seacrest again!
Next is Kendall Beard, aka your average blond country singer. She’s singing “This is for the Girls” by Martina McBride. The judges complimented her outfit but slammed her performance, calling it flat and not her best performance.
Up next is my personal favorite, Jorge Nuñez. He’s singing “Don’t Let the Son Go Down on Me” by Elton John. It’s definitely the best vocal of the night. Paula said she wanted to squeeze him, and Simon said he should be who he is instead of tying to assimilate.
Lil Rounds is the last girl of the night, so you know she’s making it into the Top 12. She’s singing “Be Without U” by Mary J. Blige. I like her dress! She’s definitely the best girl of the night, and the judges agreed. Randy commented that she didn’t lose her swagger.
Who will (hopefully) get through: Lil Rounds, Jorge Nunez, and Scott MacIntire. Who did you like/dislike?

Again I wasn’t too impressed. I think Felicia was really trying to bring. She has serious talent. I hate that she chose Alicia Keys. Taylor really messed up singing Alicia. The other girls I never really liked. I like Ju’not. That was smooth baby. Scott is precious..unbelievable talent for himself. Not the best but pretty good. Jorge was good…I wasn’t blown away. My faves of the night, Lil’ Rounds, Felicia Barton and Ju’not Joyner. Who knows who will make it….Let’s see!
