The judges thought that David Cook’s version of “Billie Jean” was brilliant. But, it’s nothing new! Chris Cornell did a version of the Michael Jackson hit that sounds almost identical. David Cook is a rocker dude and will probably sell millions of records like Daughtry, but is he really coming up with anything new?
Check out David’s version here. Whose version do YOU like best?

Dude, they said it was Cornell’s version. :/
Pay attention.

Yes, we know it was Cornell’s version. We did pay attention. And I was very grateful that he actually gave the person credit this week. BUT! If he was doing Cornell’s version, he still could have spiced it up and made it his own. It was Cornell note for note.

Oh yeah let me tell you, as a 24-year-old woman, I just can’t get me enough of a 17-year-old little baby! Sorry, but I can ASSURE you that NONE of these Idols make me “swoon”!

I just listened to BOTH versions back to back. Yes…they are SIMILAR, but completely 100% FAR from note for note.

He did a GREAT job last night, but it was slightly oversold. It wasn’t as original as the judges made it seem.

I HAD NEVER HEARD DAVID SING “MICHAEL JACKSON’S VERSION OF “BILLIE JEAN”. I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY CHRIS AND WILL VOTE FOR HIM EVEN AFTER WATCHING THE VIDEO OF DAIVD. WOW!!!! I AM IMPRESSED BY THIS YOUNG MAN. PATTY

Definitely like Cornell the better - imo his singing is much more soulful, original and “raw”.
For me, David C. is much more clean-cut and “poppish”.
Thereby I also like Cornell’s version of Cornell’s interpretation of Billy Jean the better.
This live performance is not (quote: Simon) “… insane or amazing …”, it’s amazing AND INSANE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnYo4tKBG9s

I am an avid Cornell fan. I think Badmotorfinger was one of the THE greatest rock albums of all time.
Having heard Cornell’s version before, David’s version still made my hair stand on end. It was absolutely fantastic.
I have never followed or even cared to watch American Idol in the past. I found it petty and boring. Yet this years contestants (namely David Cook, Brooke, and Asia’h) have kept me glued.
No David Cook did not invent the idea of covering BJ in a Rock/Blues form, but his version did differ significantly from Cornell’s, and he did give Cornell credit.
As for Simon’s comment, DC did do an amazing job. And it was dangerous. Asia’h got bumped for covering Whitney Houston while a handful of clearly less talented contestants remained. David covered one of the single biggest hits in pop music history.
It could have been insane. It was amazing.

I agree with Nibbers…Cornell’s version is great…but that doesn’t detract from Cook’s. It gave me chills, the guy’s got a great voice. If I’m being honest, for all that I love Chris Cornell…I actually think Cook’s voice is better, stronger…he sings the song all the way through…I feel that Chris actually screams through some of the high parts…definitely more “Raw”…because it has to be.

Sorry to say but David’s singing is a lot cleaner and his tone is way better.
I AM a fan of Chris’ but it is just a fact.
If I was Chris, I would have said SH*T!!! He did better than I did!

It is not note for note…and sorry but Cook’s version is better.
