Be sure to check back and keep refreshing the page as we will update tonight’s highlights and events as they happen!
Tonight’s theme for the contestants is singing songs from the year they were born! That’s a big range, spanning from David Archuleta (1990) to Michael Johns (1978).
Ramiele Malubay is first and she was born in 1987, so she’s singing “Alone” by Heart. Randy said it was too big of a song for her and she was pitchy, Paula said she’s forgiven because she’s sick, and Simon said it wasn’t as bad as Randy thought it was.
Jason Castro is second and he was also born in 1987, and he’s singing “Fragile” by Sting. Randy and Paula liked it but said he wasn’t venturing out of his comfort zone, and Simon said that his guitar-playing was sloppy and it was all too “guy outside a subway.”
Syesha Mercado is third and is another contestant born in 1987. She’s singing “If I Were Your Woman” by Stephanie Mills. Simon thought it was her best performance to date, Paula loved it, and Simon said there is a limit to her vocals and that song stretched it.
Chikezie Eze is fourth and was born in 1985 (Holy smokes he’s younger than I am? He looks 30!). He’s singing “If Only for One Night” by Luther Vandross. Randy said it was a little too “old school,” Paula said he did a great job, and Simon he sang it well, but the performance was very “cheesy.” Cheesy Chikezie Eze!
Hooray! A contestant older than me! Brooke White was born in 1983, and she’s singing “Every Breath You Take” by The Police. She had a little mess-up at the beginning. Randy said he appreciated her starting the song over, Paula said she’s consistent and great, and Simon said she should have stayed on the piano and ditched the band.
Michael Johns is the oldest contestant, born in 1978. He’s singing “We Are the Champions” by Queen. Randy said it was his best performance, Paula said it was his perfect song, and Simon said it was the first time with Michael he’s seen star potential and it was the only memorable performance of the night so far.
Carly Smithson is seventh and she was born in 1983. She’s singing “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler. Randy said he liked it but didn’t love it. Paula said Carly can do no wrong. Simon said something didn’t quite work because she was too uptight.
David Archuleta is eighth and is singing “You’re the Voice” by David Foster with Jeff Pescetto. He is the youngest of the bunch, born in 1990. I only caught four lip licks this time! He must be trying to improve. The judges didn’t know the song but they liked it anyway, except for Simon, who said he didn’t like the performance at all. He said it was reminiscent of a theme park song.
Kristy Lee Cook is ninth and I’m really dreading her performance. She’s singing “God Bless the USA” from 1984, when she was born, by Lee Greenwood. I just can’t imagine it not being cheesy!! (Cringe) Randy said it was a good song choice for her though it was pitchy, Paula said it was great for her, and Simon said it was her best performance and that it would keep her in the competition. I think we have just entered the Twilight Zone!
David Cook is last but not least. He was born in 1982 and is singing “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson (though, it was a slowed-down version). Randy said it was “blazing molten hot” and he might be the one to win the whole thing! Paula LOVED it, and Simon said it was very brave, that it could have been insane or amazing, and it was AMAZING! Best of the night: David Cook, Michael Johns
Worst of the night: Ramiele Malubay? I’ll refrain from listing KLC tonight just because I’m always ragging on her. At least she didn’t wear red, white, and blue!

I hope they get better, because the first three of Ramiele, Jason and Syesha just didn’t do it for me..

I liked Jason’s, but I always like Jason. I just told Nathan, “at this point I don’t really care who wins, as long as it’s Jason Castro.”
I love David A., but that lip-licking thing really bothers me.

Add the Gasping for Air along with the Lip Licking and you have David Archuleta to a T..
I Liked Cheesy Chikezie Eze even if randy and Simple Simon Didn’t.

Chrishin you are absolutely right. What gives? It was performed in 1990 by David Foster - Since David Foster has an Idol connection- and Jeff Archuleta the stage dad, I wonder if it was all an I-tunes Ploy to get David Foster some Royalties and hopefully since Little Archuleta
From Wiki:
You’re the Voice” is a song written by Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson for John Farnham, which he recorded in 1985 for his sixteenth album Whispering Jack (first released 1986).

David Cook blew them all away!!!! I LOVE that guy even if he is a bit cocky. But aren’t all the rockers a bit cocky??
