American Idol 2-19-09 Top 12 Men Performance Review

All the auditions are done, the Top 24 have been chosen. 12 Men 12 Women set to perform for the first time live on American Idol. This weeks theme is the 1960’s music.

The Top 12 Boys performed tonight 2-19-08 while the girls watched. The girls perform their 1960’s songs tomorrow 2-20-08 and 2 men and two women will be voted off American Idol on 2-21-08 bringing us to the top 20.

It was a night of 3 standout performances, many bad song choices, many negative comments by Judge Simon Cowell or Just your normal Idol Season performance night.

First to hit the stage was 24 year old David Hernandez from Glendale Arizona. After hearing about growing up in a single mom family, David Hernandez sang “Midnight Hour“. AI Judge Randy Jackson called it “Cool, liked the Gospel vive and he Did a really good job and the competition is on” Paula Abdul said “Great Vocals, Lovely and Really cool Job”. Persnickety Judge Simon Cowell said ” It was Better than he thought it would be, he didn’t like the end, and you need to lossen up, you seemed stiff and nervous and it was not distinct“.

The Second of the American Idol Top 12 boys to hit the stage was Chikezie Eze in his Reddish suit singing “I love you more today than yesterday“. Randy thought “It was pretty good, Old Fashioned and you need to make it Your Own and Fresh.” Simon Cowell said, “My problem I hated the whole performance, Suit is hideous, the Wink Hideous, the Wow factor Hideous, it was Old, Corney, cheesy and so old fashioned.” Chikezie Eze didn’t take kindly to Simon’s Remarks and started to argue with the Judge. Not a smart move Chicky Cheesy! Quick way to be voted off and lose a potential alley in the Idol camp

Third up was David Cook, the 25 year old out of Blue Springs, Mo. David Cook sang, “Happy Together” by the Turtles. Randy thought, “it was a weird song, but you worked it out and was good“. Paula stated, “Worked out and great praise“. Simon said, “it was good, weird song to choose and you almost made it believable.

Fourth up was 28 year old Jason Yeager, who song the old classic but boring song “Moon River“. Randy Jackson said, “You stayed in the song, and it was hard to sing”. Paula was incomprehensible, and Simon called” it a Cruise Ship version, you have a lot of people at home with a giant question mark over our head. Neither here nor there, it was like a dependable old dog, and not exciting.”

Fifth up was Robbie Carrico the former boy bander turned rocker from Melbourne, Fl. Robbie Carrico sang the Three Dog Night song, “One“. Randy said, “Nice one, Very nice, it moved me” Paul said, “Perfect song for you, it was Authentic“. Simon said, “ it was good, but are you ar Rocker or a Pop Singer”

David Archuleta brought us to the half way point by being the sixth singer to perform. David Archuleta the former Junior Star Search Winner at age 12, sand “Shop Around“. Randy stated ” I am a big fan, you are born with a gift. I loved it“. American Idol Judge Paula Abdul said, “that was brave and Bold song choice. Did a great Job“. Simon said, “When you got it you have got it. By a Mile the best performance of the night so far.”

The 7th contestant up for the Top12 Boys on 2-19-08 was Danny Noriega the 18 year old from Azusa, Ca. who was cut the first day in the Hollywood week round in Idol Season 6. Danny Noriega sang the Elvis Song, “Jail House Rock“. Randy commented, “you love to have a good time, it was pretty good and vocally ok, Kinda Hot” Paula said, ” It was warm and amazing vocals” Simon Cowell with the “Hopeless Hairdo” said ” it was verging on grotesque at least do Elvis well. It was awful.”

The 8th singer of the night was little known about Luke Menard. Luke Menard sang “Everyones Talking“. Randy Jackson said, “very Pitchy. wasn’t great” Paula stated ” Not best song choice, but unbelievable range and to pick better songs” Simon called it ” Forgettable, no one will remember you. You have to stand out“.

Coming up 9th to perform was Colton Berry the 18 year old from Stuanton, Va who described himself as an Ellen Degeneras Look-a-like. Colton Berry sang another Elvis Song, “Suspicious Minds“. Randy thought ” Pretty good Job“. Paula added, ” Nice to see a different side of you, Not the best performance” Simon quipped, ” Ok, a young kid singing Elvis, but it was not that of a Recording Artist. it was Karaoke”

Up Tenth was Garrett Haley who at age 17 sang “Breaking up is hard to do” by Neil Sedaka. Randy stated, “you have got to bring something new, it was kind of boring” Paula added ” You can change up the song“. Simon on edge called it “ whinny, Boring, you look like you were shut up in a bedroom for a month, you need to get out and get some air. You are pale.”

Jason Castro was the 11th singer to perform and along with his guitar sang “Day Dream”. Randy thought “it was Pitchy but alright”. Paula stated ” You blow me away, it was joyful and less is sometimes more“. Simon added ” It was the Top 2 performance of the night. You have got it. Effortless.”

The last of the Top 12 was Michael Lee Johns, or Michael Johns who sang the classic Doors Song “Light My Fire” American Idol Judge Randy Jackson said, ” i love you. sing great, a true lead singer, Rock performer. You are Hot“. Paula added “Excellent. A great Part of this show“. Simon said, ” Most consistent and confident. Natural charisma. You have Got It.”

Of tonight show, Michael John, Jason Castro and David Archuleta stood out tonight. Possible bottom 4 for the vote off on 2-21-09 for tonight based upon performance and judges commentary were, Chikezie Eze, Jason Yeager, Luke Menard, Colton Berry.
