American Idol Interview with Carmen Rasmusen
by Jessica P. Wallin

Carmen Rasmusen, Canadian-American country singer, ranked sixth on the second season of American Idol. Here, she talks with me about her experience on Idol, staying true toCarmen Rasmusen herself, and staying grounded in the limelight.

How do you stand out in a crowd?

I believe I stand out from the crowd because I’m a very positive person. My faith and family mean the most to me. I’m not worried about what other people think, as long as I know I’m staying true to myself.

What was it like auditioning for American Idol? How is it like/unlike what viewers see on T.V.?

I didn’t know what to expect when trying out for Idol. I’d only seen the finale from Season One. I was surprised at how mean Simon was, and yet how genuine he really is. He’s not nearly as bad as everyone thinks!

What has life been like post-Idol? How has it helped/hurt your career?

Post-Idol, life is great. It was an awesome taste of fame and prepared me for what I’ve done now: released an album. I knew what to expect. But I haven’t forgotten that I still come home to ME at night. I don’t let the glamour get to me. It’s not what’s important.

Any regrets?

The only regret I’d have, is if I put my career before my family. I love singing, but I love my family much, much more. It’s a challenge, but I’m up for it! Other than that, I have absolutely no regrets from Idol.

What were your favorite songs to sing on AI?

My favorite song to sing was “Can’t Hurry Love.” “Turn the Beat Around” was a close second.

What was it like on the Idol tour?
It was tough being on the Idol tour. I had never been away from my family that long, and I was still standing in the other contestants shadows. It was a lot of hard work.

Who are your major musical influences?
Shania Twain and Garth Brooks. I love how entertaining they are. They have all the right stuff; songwriting, performing skills, and vocal skills.

What is the nature of your fan base?
I have a very broad fan base–girls ages 12-35 and men ages 15-60. I’ll always be grateful to American Idol for giving me a jump start.

How do you manage to stay grounded when so much attention is focused towards you? How do you avoid becoming another Lindsay or Britney?

You have to know who you are and what you stand for BEFORE you’re shoved in the spotlight. I have a strong support system, I was taught great values, and I know what’s important in life. If you’re always worrying about making the media happy, you’ll make yourself miserable. Truth is, you’ll never regret making good choices.

Carmen’s new CD, Nothin’ Like the Summer, is available now. She is also writing a book that will be out in time for Christmas entitled Staying in Tune about “staying in tune with who you are no matter what.”

Thanks for the interview post. Great job. Did you also know she has a personal story in the new Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul? One of the most exciting parts of her story are the American Idol call to her house telling her they wanted her back for the wild card show. Boy am I glad, finally and Idol worth voting for. If they hadn’t done that the season wouldn’t had been near as good.
