Former “American Idol” contestant Chris Daughtry finished fourth on the show last year, but the rocker still has the spotlight.
His self-titled CD, “Daughtry,” is the fastest-selling rock debut in SoundScan history and recently went triple platinum. And now Daughtry and his band are coming to Jackson.
Tickets went on sale at 9 a.m. Monday at the Carl Perkins Civic Center, and 1,000 had been sold as of 5 p.m. The civic center’s capacity is 3,200.
The concert is scheduled for Aug. 2. It is expected to sell out, said Shane Connor. He is the city’s special events consultant.
Selling a third of the building capacity the first day is good, Connor said.
“I think it’s sold twice as much as the other concerts. If we do sell out, since we just added the new capacity of 3,200, it would be the biggest show in the civic center’s history.”
Past shows at Carl Perkins Civic Center had a capacity of 3,000.
LuAnn Brewer and her 10-year-old son, Dakota, of Adamsville, arrived 30 minutes early to buy tickets for their family. They were first in line.
They watched Daughtry perform on “Idol” and own his CD.
Daughtry’s debut single, “It’s Not Over,” is Dakota’s favorite song on the album.
Every song on Daughtry’s CD is a favorite of 19-year-old Ashley Adams’.
She and her mom, Barbara, voted for him on “Idol.”
“I was disappointed when he left,” Adams said. “He has wonderful music …”
Daughtry impressed Tracey Harber, of Alamo, by singing hits by popular rock bands on the show.
“He just made everything his song,” she said.
Plus, she thinks he’s good looking.
“I watched him from the day he walked in on ‘American Idol,’” Harber said.
Tickets went on sale on her day off from work. She is a bail bond agent and owner of a cleaning services company. She bought tickets for herself and her family. They’re all Daughtry fans.
John Burroughs, 25, drove in from Gleason to buy tickets.
He watched Daughtry on “Idol” and has his CD, too. Daughtry was his favorite on “American Idol” because he preferred to hear rock music on the show.
“I love Chris,” Burroughs said. “That’s my kind of music right there.”
This year, he’s been to every rock concert that’s come to Jackson, so missing this one is out of the question. He said it’s worth coming to Jackson to see these acts.
“I like it a lot better than having to drive to Memphis,” Burroughs said.
